Evil child? They said nothing of the sort. Only that his attachment and fear made him a dangerous prospect to train. Attachment isn't evil, emotion isn't evil, nothing of the sort is implied. What is implied is that to train a being to be more powerful than everyone else, you need to be sure that that person is dedicated to peace and justice above the concerns of personal attachment and fear that would drive them to use their power for selfish gain. AKA the dark side. They are not training soldiers, they are training what amounts to gods among men. You literally watch how right they were play out.

No they cannot free the mom coz they didn't have the money to do so. If they took Shmi, Watto would kill her with the chip all slave's had. Even if Quigon is a Jedi Master he cannot took all the Hutt cartel on his own and since they control the slave market, he can't just simply abduct Shmi and threaten Watto or other slavers. Loved the reaction.

That said, I absolutely think Qui-Gon was intending to find some way of freeing Shmi once the time crunch and crisis they were right in the middle of was resolved, by legal or rule-bendy means. Events... just didn't give him the chance. Where Obi-Wan still had stuff to learn was breaking out of blind obedience to the code and to strict jurisdictions and doing the "correct" thing (as opposed to Qui-Gon looking harder and trying to find and do the "right/good" thing). He eventually got there himself but the loss of Qui-Gon delayed that a lot. Hence, I think Obi-Wan didn't realise the importance of going back for Shmi, to do right by her and to do right by Anakin's mental and emotional health, until it was too late.

On the jedi: Yes, they are dogmatic. Yes, they are flawed. No, they could not help Ani with his mom; Qui gon tried, but he got nowhere with negotiating and he is not the kind of jedi that threatens or uses violence to get his way. The jedi (technically) are not supposed to go around to foreign lands enforcing their own laws and imposing their ideals on the local population - even if it is something virtuous, like freeing slaves, it is not their place to do so, thats more of a local political issue. During the time of the Republic, before the great war thats coming up, the jedi are meant to be neutral and non-political, you might be able to see traces of that throughout the prequels, but you will also be able to see that the jedi have been around for so long that they may have lost sight of their original purpose. Another thing to keep in mind: Anakin was given a choice to either come along to be a jedi or stay with his mother, knowing she would not be freed. As un fair and terrible of a circumstance as that is, Anakin chose this life, both for better and worse.

Part of the point that Yoda is trying to make is that attachment to things and people lead you to make decisions based on that instead of what is the greater good which is the decision that a Jedi is supposed to be able to make the decision to do what is best for everyone not what is best for himself which is why a Jedi must swear off these things like love and attachment because those things can blind you and make you make decisions based on how you feel for the ones you were attached to instead of saving all the other lives as is your duty as a Jedi
@thomasjoychild4962

Exactly. Also, unfortunately, jedi doctrine at this point has settled on "don't feel things, or suppress what you do feel" rather than "learn to deal with your feelings healthily, so that you can feel and acknowledge them without being ruled by them." The council here's gotten caught up on dogma while forgetting what jedi are for.
@oneironaut420

The Jedi have no jurisdiction on Tatooine because it's not in the Republic, and the Jedi serve the Republic, they aren't really independent agents in this situation. Just as our military can't just go to another country and free oppressed people without potentially starting an international incident or even a war, the Jedi can't do much more than serve as ambassadors. And yes, Jedi are taken as infants so that they don't have any attachments to their families that could distract them or lead them to the dark side of the Force. Most Jedi never see their birth families; the Jedi Order becomes their family. So this would also have to be true for Anakin.

31:10 That's actually Jabba himself, this movie is 32 years before a New hope and Jabba was born 600 years before, and died 4 years later in Return of the jedi So Jedi don't have any money, that's why Qui-gon couldn't free Shmi (Ani's mom), Qui wanted to but Wattos mind is too strong for a mind trick, and he didn't want to give away two slaves for the deal. The mind trick was said to work only on the weak-minded, and there were certain species, including Toydarians, Geonosians, and Hutts, that were either highly resistant or immune to it.

It's more like they've become dogmatic and set in their ways, losing all flexibility. The Jedi and the Sith have both become extremes of the Force users, which causes this essential unbalance that Anakin is supposed to be able to fix. In essence he does, because through his actions the Jedi are reduced to almost nothing, which was already the case for the Sith. In the aftermath of this a new kind of Force user is allowed to rise, one who might return to a more balanced view of the Force. It's just a pity that the Sequels never addressed this, instead trying to redo the original trilogy for the modern times, which lead to the mess that the sequels were. George should have kept control of Star Wars's direction before he sold to Disney!

He said with his own words that the dark side corrupts and there is no "middle". Again, not saying i think it's cooler or better this way, just that George have some pretty strong opinions about the idea. Favreau and Filoni circled the idea from a "safe distance" for a while, but also seem to have let it go.

They shouldn’t train someone to use and get attached to the ways of the force, who has as much fear, and sadness as Anakin does. The force dark side feeds on those negative emotions. It also consumes you, like a drug, and they don’t want to risk training him and he goes down that path. They weren’t blaming this kid for having these feelings, they were giving the reasons why he shouldn’t be trained.

The Padawan braid (like Obi-Wan's) was used as a symbol of rank to distinguish apprentices within the Jedi Order. In the first trilogy, the fights were based on techniques half-remembered by older Jedi who had been scattered and in hiding for 19 years. For the prequels, fight choreographer Nick Gillat developed new fighting styles for Jedi in their prime. Alec Guinness is referenced twice in this film. The first, and most obvious, way is that Ewan McGregor adopts his speech patterns in his performance as Obi-Wan. The second is that voice artist Andy Secombe uses Guiness' performance as Fagin in 'Oliver Twist' as the basis for Watto, the junk dealer. Shmi can't go because of the way the bet with Watto worked out. Remember, Watto refused to let them both go. While Qui-Gon would have taken both, Anakin was more important, which is why he influenced the chance cube the way he did. Qui-Gon has to abide by the outcome of the race, just as Watto does. Yes, Force-sensitive children are identified very young, and taken from their families to be raised and trained at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. One of the basic principles of the Jedi is that they have no attachments that would distract them. It wouldn't matter if they had brought Shmi as well; Anakin's attachment to her would still be too strong. While we know that Padme/Amidala is 14, making her only 5 years older than Anakin, we don't know how quickly Nabooans mature. They apparently mature in intelligence much more quickly than some other species. By contrast, Yoda's species (which still has not been named) matures much more slowly, with an individual aged 50 is still considered a child.

You just get it. Simple as that. George's Star Wars is something you have to _get_ on a deeply emotional, borderline subconscious level, and you do. One important thing to note about the concept of "balance to the force" though is that, in George's view, it explicitly means _the destruction of the Sith_ , NOT achieving a balance of light and dark. That's because the Sith are like a cancer to the force. They selfishly dominate and violate it, disrupting it and forcefully bending it to their will, essentially trying to play God instead of servicing the force and going with the flow, which is what the Jedi do. You're obviously right to note that the Jedi order is evidently flawed and enabling its own undoing, but that stems more from a place of nervously seeking false security through tradition and dogma than from any intentional maliciousness. Ironically, they've become afraid of fear itself. But they're still redeemable/reformable. The Sith, by nature, aren't. To put it simply: The Jedi are flawed heroes. The Sith are monsters. (Hence Maul's look. Lucas ordered his concept artists to make him look like "the devil incarnate.") And that's why Anakin's fated balancing act was always _destroying Darth Sidious aka the Emperor_ (and Darth Vader too, in a way), not joining "both sides" or anything. He didn't technically _need_ to go evil to fulfill his destiny. That has nothing to do with Lucas's balance. And in an ideal world he wouldn't have. But due to bad circumstances, very much including a flawed Jedi order, he was led to make bad decisions which unnecessarily _delayed_ the fulfillment of his destiny. So, if anything, the Jedi weren't in the way of balance as much as they stood _in their own way_ while rightfully trying to achieve it. But the force, uh, finds a way. And Anakin finds a reactor shaft to yeet his tor-mentor and his unnecessary Sith identity into. Just wanted to make that clear, since that's really the only element of the story where you seem to be straying from Lucas's intention, going more towards the popular "Grey Jedi" idea, which, to Lucas, is an oxymoron. Any force user who goes "both sides" is a Sith in the making. Just like how people who say that they're neither right nor left are typically clearly right lol. _Excellent_ analysis on all other points though, especially regarding Padmé and her similarities with, and connection to, Anakin. Really looking forward to the rest, because, as I said, and balance shmalance aside: You just get it.

with the whole taking force sensitive people as kids i reckon it's a similar situation as mages in dragon age. they're both born with access to this magical power and without proper training could cause a lot of damage. so the jedi are like a self governing circle of magi and sith are like blood mages. so i imagine when someone has a force sensitive child they realise it's best for them to go to the jedi for training than risk them falling to the dark side and just taking over whatever planet they happened to be born on etc.

The only option they have is to make them speak an alien language with subtitles. But in Star Wars almost everyone speaks Galactic Basic. I think those aliens sound pretty good. Sort of like Chinese mixed with British English. Either way, I'm sure it isn't an easy task. "Why are you doing that?" Referring to the Sand People or Tusken Raiders, they are violent scavengers. They raid local villages and kill people in order to steal their resources. Another reason is because these people are all driving their infernal noisy machines through their territory.

I’m glad you liked this one! I loved it as a kid, as I got older I noticed it’s a little rough around the edges, but in my opinion there are no bad Star Wars stories, some are just better than others. Definitely this movie illustrates that George Lucas was sometimes the series’s greatest blessing and worst curse all at once. Giving him this much creative freedom, there are some ups and downs. lol And on that note, I absolutely lost it when of all the things Caleb felt the need to explain in the movie it was the gungan use of the word “hot” and not, like, the entire gungans or so many other wild things about this movie. lol

Something I don’t understand about criticisms of this movie: I never heard “Asian accents” from the nemoidians, but even if they are, why is that wrong? It’s ok for all of the villains to have British accents but not any other? I don’t get it 🤷‍♀️
@PhilMeisterOriginal
@PhilMeisterOriginal 6 ай бұрын
I never understood that particular criticism either. Personally when I was a child watching this movie the voices of the nemoidians were so diverse from what was normally heard from any character it made their appearances in the film more special. Also I find that different accents make the Star Wars Galaxy feel bigger and more diverse in ways of life. It also works behind the scenes to when the films are translated into different languages. When the accents are already established for each race, different speech patterns and tones, allows for a more universally accepted lore of these races across all languages.

A new journey awaits you! Glad we’re finally experiencing the prequels. There’s so much to unpack in the prequels and the beauty of it is we get to see a different side to the Jedi. As you’ve noticed the Jedi seem a bit stuffy and a disconnected but Yoda is right. Fear is the quintessential trait of the dark side, no matter how old or experienced, fear is potent to turning anyone to the dark side.
@jmwilliamsart
@jmwilliamsart 8 ай бұрын
The problem is that the current Jedi code was predicated on ‘fear’, fear of the dark side and fear of loosing their own to the dark side. The Jedi ended up contradicting themselves, and they also allowed themselves to become too dogmatic, rigid, and too detached from others. The Jedi had also allowed themselves to become lapdogs of politicians instead of following the force.

How was Qui-Gon supposed to free the mother. Please, comment if you have any better ideas. He can’t force Watto to free her because the Jedi are supposed to be peace keepers. What a bad look it would be if Qui-Gon threatened Watto, and Watto was firm on holding onto the mother. Besides, mind tricks don’t work on members of Watto’s race.

So happy that the reaction to the prequels are starting. Couldnt wait. About Obi Wans Hair.... yeah i looks kind of stupid, BUT the braid is tradition for Human Jedi Padawans until they achieve Knighthood. They couldnt take Anakins Mom with them, since they had no money to buy her and Jedi cant take the law into their own hands outside of republic juristiction, at least not anymore. Thousands of years the jedi were more freelance and not as connected with the republic. And they cant act out of their ,,selfish" desire to save ONE specific person.

also balance in the force doesnt really mean equal dark and light. George Lucas once explained that the dark side is selfish and the light selfless. Sucks that I have to wait 2 weeks for part 2 they are really good ALSO yea that's what the Jedi usually do, start training force sensitive kids even younger, they are taken from their families so I guess usually they don't even have attachments to their parents.
@Frangucci
@Frangucci 8 ай бұрын
The thing with Anakin's mother being left behind... Jedi track down infants and take them from their parents right after their born due to their belief that attachment will lead them to be corrupted by the dark side of the force. This is why Anakin (being 9 years old) is deemed to old to start his training, because he has grown attached to his mother already. It's kind of messed up that the jedi have been doing this throughout their history, but this is probably why Qui Gon didn't fight harder to get Warto to gamble away her freedom. More will be revealed through the next two movies and I might comment more on this should it come up. Can't wait to see/hear your thoughts on the rest of this movie as well as the next two. @@MegMageReacts When/if you learn more about how the Jedi train kids from very young, it makes a kind of sense from the Buddhist ideas of not having attachments to world in order to attain enlightenment. By leaving their families so young, they cant "miss" them, fear their loss, which as Yoda mentions is a potential temptation towards the dark side. From our point of view of familial society...its pretty f'ed up to take a kid from their parents like that. But for a monastic order of Buddhist monks( the Jedi) who are encouraged to "let go of attachments", family bonds and romantic relationships would all be dangerous complications, its a necessity to take them very young from their point of view. Thats why they say he was too old at age 8, already old enough to fear the loss of his mother and remember it as he grows up.

what is your deal?! you're drilling too far into what you want to happen in the story: no one WANTS to leave Shmi (Anakin's mother) on the planet, but they're not gonna steal her from Watto. They made a deal. It was either just Anakin....or no deal. If they're just gonna steal them both, what's the point of even MAKING a deal?? Forcefully taking her is the last resort, but sadly, this is against Jedi Code. It's also worth noting that had Shmi been liberated somehow, she would've had to live away from Anakin anyway, even if on the same planet with a better life. Padawans are raised and trained without their parents. Once they become full Jedi they can reunite with the parents possibly. The Slave Trade is essentially run by the Hutts and other clans out in these outer worlds....make enemies with Watto, and he might possibly do a very common thing and have them hunted or labeled a bounty, and these worlds are pretty common destinations. Again, it's all in conflict with the Jedi way of doing things, where you try to essentially be diplomatic and minimize your enemies. Another crazy detail NOT mentioned in the movie is the transmitter chip installed in slaves that detonates if they leave. Watto probably removed or disabled Anakin's when he left.

The greatest part about this whole reaction is that you started commenting on the accents... BEFORE jar-jar binks even came on the screen! Bahahaha. I was thinking the whole time; "... you ain't seen nothin' yet. Just wait for it..." I really wish George Lucas had the balls to follow through with his initial foreshadowing and make Darth Jar Jar but alas, the world wasn't ready. We need a "George Lucas Cut" akin to a "Zack Snyder cut" where he follows through and makes a 15 hour movie that fills in the blanks and ends with Jar Jar being basically Darth Plagueis. There may exist a universe in which we got that movie instead of a Snyder cut. What I wouldn't give for interdimensional cable.

The “foreign accents” is both problematic and extremely logical. George Lucas wanted each planet and its inhabitants to be unique. So for instance, the inhabitants of Ryloth all speak with a French accent in the clone wars. They’re all good guys. The separatist dudes planet is “Chinese”, depa belaba’s species are “Indian”, etc. it’s a slightly dated way of displaying the linguistic variety of the universe without creating a million fake languages (which Lucas kind of did anyway).

For these films Lucas tried to go for the feel of a period drama, but because he lacked the knack for directing people it didn't land as well as it could've, even coming off as wooden at times. Furthermore he used the first draft of the script without giving time for refinement as he had with A New Hope. So while a lot of interesting ideas are presented, which have given more credit thanks to them (and fandom toxicity) getting re-evaluated in recent years , there's also quite a number of oddity's, like making C-3PO Anakin'd creation when it might have made more sense to make him a palace droid. Overall while the prequals are no where near as bad as overreacting hyperbolic fans made them out to be, there's still noticable clunk here and there.

To be fair to George Lucas, he did ask his friend Steven Spielberg to direct a Star Wars film, but he turned it down. George knows that writing dialogue and giving instructions to actors are not his strong points, and tries to collaborate with people to make his films better. Carrie Fisher often helped tweak his scripts. He doesn't just surround himself with "yes men", as some people claim. That's why the Clone Wars collaboration was so good, because Dave Filoni is excellent at working with actors, so he was able to help bring those prequel characters to life in a way that George was not.

There’s a difference between allowing an actor to use their natural accent and forcing a Chinese accent onto an alien race hyper-fixated on securing capital and taking down the republic. It seems pointed at worst and kinda careless at best. For us, it was just an interesting direction choice to have an alien sound asian when they could have just been given their own language like many of the other aliens or used the actors’ original dialects.
