Catch up with little Phabeni on a morning at the orphanage as he meets Khanyisa and some of the other elephant cows across the fence - including Timisa, Pisa, Limpopo and Kumbura.
There is a long road of healing ahead for Phabeni as he grieves the loss of one family and builds bonds with his new one. Fortunately the herd awaiting him are welcoming and accepting and ready to take him in as one of their own. Phabeni just needs the confidence and trust to take this next step.
Little by little, Phabeni. 🩷🐘💚

@@nicoletteralfe733 Thanks for the reply. What were the wounds from? I'm also curious do elephants always welcome an orphan into their herd, or have there been cases where they will not welcome an elephant? One more question, in the wild, will elephants adopt a stray/orphaned elephant if their paths happen to intersect? If a herd saw a baby elephant all alone would they adopt it or?

@@jacekpaszkowski2000 Khanyisa got her head caught in a horrific snare and was abandoned by her herd. She was trapped in this state for many weeks before she was found, long enough that the snare had eventually sliced through one side of her mouth and cut off part of an ear. She's such a happy, healthy elephant nowadays that save for the fading scars on her face you'd never know she went through such a horrendous ordeal as a baby.

@@jacekpaszkowski2000 Khanyisa had wounds around her head and ear, she had been caught in a snare. It took awhile for those to heal. Elephants in the wild do not always welcome an orphan into their herd, in fact it seems to me that they usually do not, and rescues happen with human intervention, like here at HERD, and other places. HERD is mostly rescued elephants, and with the help of humans, the babies have been successfully introduced and accepted. It is done very slowly so they can bond. Only lactating mammals of all species including human, can breastfeed. Females lactate (have milk produced in the mammary glands) right after childbirth. If they don't breastfeed the milk dries up and they stop producing milk. Elephants are milk dependent until around age 4-5, a young baby without a mother or bottle fed by humans usually does not survive (see Sheldrick Trust channel). An elephant that is not the orphan's mother and with a child of her own (therefore lactating) would be very reluctant to take on another baby. Female elephants without a baby, not lactating, might want a baby, but it would die since there is no milk.

But it's lovely to see him meet the Herd and start slowly developing a bond with them and visa versa. They are definitely all curious 😊😊

I don't think there's been a breakthrough for Phabeni on an emotional level yet. He has not yet adapted to the new conditions enough to feel confident. The little elephant behaves shyly and is a bit withdrawn. So mental therapy may take longer than physical recovery. I assume that when he finds contact in the herd, he will quickly adopt him. Elephants are like humans and have different personalities, just like Phabeni is different from Khanyisa.

❤️ Love reading all the comments. The summary is we all love Phabeni and HERD. PHABENI and all orphans arrive traumatized. They all arrive fearful and mistrusting. As do human little ones. Trauma is Trauma The words we attach as humans shy, aloof, disinterested doesn't matter. His physical health and mental health matter. We know he's a boy. We know all babies any kind have their own personality. Phabeni will be a baby for months to come. We will watch his process and learn who he is. * what I personally feel strongly about is no whistling and nicknames. I wish he was addressed as Phabeni all the time. The whistling bothering me is a me thing. ❤️ I have experienced trauma and disappeared from family and friends 1 full yearbin 2018. I am FAR from Shy or Aloof. We all heal in our own way. Regardless of species.

My best friend was a Crow I got from a Nest nearby my home . wild birds and animals will respond --in kind--to people who reach out to them for emotional comfort. P is still emotionally blocking off from all--to one extent or another-- the Carer assigned to him--Even Adine doesn't seem to have an affect on him--even though she calls him quite a bit. See the same thing with Moon Bears rescued from bile farms in indo china. Takes them a while even to walk into an open space outdoors from a small cage imprisonment of 20+ yrs. looking forward to P being less withdrawn and shy a youngster in his yrs ahead. Fate sure landed him in the right place for that kind of future. Wonderful Video--thanks for posting.

How interesting that Tokwe and Lundi stayed behind watching as the other females approached the fence to see Seuntjie. Sweet and beautiful Timisa's 💞reaction was super. Pisa was being Pisa, hi and bye!-for now. And Kumbura wondering if she'll have a new charge? Khanyisa was really intrigued by it all, but the bond between her and Timi is for life. Phabeni is very shy, but he'll come around in his own time. I can't wait to see the reactions from Bubi, Setombe and Klaserie. Limpopo, you stole the show! I am anxious to see Bubi's reaction to Phabeni--as her skittishness may have met a match! These two may bond well! Thanks for this great video.

So beautifully said! I agree with you 100% that Bubi is the one that may relate to Phabeni the best! Her internal scars are deep...and possibly can nurture this baby in these ways better than most. She is a wonderful mother...and I look forward to these two precious ellies meeting. Still laughing at your utterly truthful mention of Pisa! LOL but did you notice how tall she has gotten? She is reaching and overtaking Limpopo! How cute! Thank you again for your beautiful comment and keen observations! Blessings my friend!

Limpopo charmed us all!! What a darling she is! Baby Phabeni did beautiful! No reason to force a meeting when he has all the time in the world. To me..Timi looked the most impressed with baby Phabeni..steadfast and patient little ellie that she is. I think Kumbura would have loved more time to see him....and wished Phabeni could have seen Jabu to sort of reinforce his scent and presence. Phabeni is fragile...and needs his baby steps that will serve him best at this crucial time. His being a little boy, as opposed to a little girl shows the huge difference in personalities and we wouldnt change a thing! He may be a little headstrong...but once he can get past his sorrow his reward will come in a new and loving family! I think Tokwe, Lundi, and Bubi will win him over! Especially the two having raised boys...they have a edge! The whole experience was beautiful! And tho Phabeni is skeptical...we cant blame him! So much love will be showered over him...soon he will know he is safe and loved!! Thank you Herd for showing us that baby Phabeni stepped up to the challenge BEAUTIFULLY! 💗💗💗💗💗

Oh be still my heart little Phabeni is slowly realizing “wait a minute these giants look like me I have a family again”😭😭the Jabulani herd never ceases to blow me away with their gentle curiosity and acceptance of new little ones. Those of us who’ve been here from Bravehearts rescue and integration saw the way they were with her and should not be surprised but it doesn’t make these new moments with Phabeni any less magical or emotional after these elephants more than any others truly understand the feelings that little Moses is experiencing the loss and fear and they will be the ones to help him heal. I just want to reach out to him and take away all his hurt and sadness soon though the herd will work their magic and I have no doubt he’ll be as strong and rambunctious as Mambo who better to teach him all his mischievous ways. It only gets better from here on Phabeni I promise you are so very loved.💙🐘🤗🤗

I rewatched Khanyisa week 1 from 3 yrs ago. Definitely night and day. Phabeni in my opinion has a story we will never know & I believe we have no idea how this will play out realistically. We all support this beautiful little boy and that is all The carers or experts can do. As long as he's eating and not losing weight its a + . ❤

As humans, knowing how painful it is to be abandoned by your mother at a young age, as I was; we can understand the crucial bond that has been broken here. This is where Adine and the carers gifts of rehabilitation are so important. This little guy is grieving his loss. It is heartbreaking to watch right now, but he will be ok in the near future. 💔 to 💞.

I suspect like traumatised dogs Phabeni is very sensitive to stimulation just now. It takes time for them to get back in control of that…luckily with the support he has in the orphanage. We never force our dogs to engage with the others until they have made the journey themselves. It is a critical time for the trauma to heal. It must be so confusing to be in a completely different circumstance. I am sure with time and patience he will interact with the others. He may feel confused about where he belongs after being separated from his herd. Thank you for the good work you are doing to help him survive.

I loved how Limpopo took interest right away with sweet Phabeni and I have a feeling that if this relationship continues to blossom then it could be possible that she could end up becoming his foster parent and I’m sure they both will be happy together but however, I know it’s a long ways away for him cause he’s just now starting to get used to the Herd and his surroundings too along with the humans and also more visits with the Herd on each side of the fence too. God bless you sweet boy! You will have many loving elephant family members to love you and want to take great care or you too. God bless and have an awesome night and day tomorrow too. Sue M. Yes that's what I thought she's putting herself forward as a frontrunner for main mamma for this littleboy. I think Limpopo and lundi would be a good pairing and should be mamma and nanny to this baby. Limpopo main mamma and lundi the nanny because she would be wise on the boy aspect as she is main naughty boy mambos mamma. in the wild Limpopo would almost definitely have 1 if not 2 calf's by now or another on the way so it would make sense to let 1 of the younger females to keep stability in the herd and not just the eldest 2 females always adopting
