*Huge* Little Feat fan here! My God was Lowell George ever a brilliant musician. The talent that man had could fill a stadium. We lost out on decades of great music with his untimely death. Long Distance Love has always been one of my favs of theirs along with All That You Dream and Roll Um Easy. This song in particular always gave me strong Van Morrison vibes.

It was summer of 1978, I was making a late night turn around run from Flagstaff to Santa Fe. I noticed my fuel light came on and I was out of gas. There were no gas stations for the next 27 miles. I had no extra fuel on board. I was doomed. If this shipment didn’t arrive on time my entire family would be killed. There was nothing I could do. Out of nowhere, the sweet sounds of Lowell George’s raspy voice came slowly oozing out of my speakers and filled the cabin of my rig. As I sang along with tears streaming down my face, thinking of my family and how I let them down, I looked at fuel and it started to rise. Thinking I was hallucinating, I became confused but kept singing. I started singing harder and harder along with the this song and just as the song ended…my fuel light shut back off. Miraculously I was able to drive long enough to get to the fuel station and complete the run. My family was saved. Thanks Lowell George.

It’s amazing that Lowe can sing as well as he is in this video, considering the fact that he’s so high on cocaine and alcohol that he’s literally sweating bullets! Every year, my brother and his friends on Nantucket threw a “Little Feat” party on June 29th. It started out small, but over the years it grew to be a rather large affair. It was often held at Corky Lang’s house… and that eventually led to other rockstar luminaries finding themselves on Nantucket so they could go to the party. It was a wild time and included massive amounts of barbecue, seafood right off the boat, adult beverages/party favors, and a jam session that often went on into late Sunday afternoon the next day! It was the same weekend every year and during that unfortunate June in 1979, Mr. Lowell George took his leave from us and left his worldly concerns behind. Lowe died on Friday, and the next day the official name of the annual event was changed to: “The Lowe George Memorial concert”. True story! Sadly, Mr. George was really coming into his own with the release of “Thanks, I’ll Eat It Here” The song 20 Million Things is a miracle of songwriting narrative and music production. That is both exquisitely, complicated and very easy to listen to at the same time. In fact, that song is often taught in music schools and conservatories, because there is a plethora of wonderful examples of harmonic rhythm, bass line re-harmonization, New Orleans style, percussion, and drumming, and so forth.
@stargazer67536 ай бұрын
Your comments are very interesting. I am familiar with these songs “Long Distance Love” and “20 Million Things” not only because of Lowell but because of the fact Jackson Browne, a really best friend to Lowell, thoroughly respecting his talent and choosing to cover those two songs recognizing how brilliant they were. He was Godfather to both Lowell’s daughter and the daughter of Warren Zevon, whom he also thought was a brilliant writer when no one else did. But that relationship a whole other story.

This must have been recorded after the first of two motorcycle accidents Richie had before it was put into his contract that he could NOT ride again! Richie's hospital bills - including his home address - were printed on the back of the Little Feat album, forcing he and his family to move. The 2nd accident happened in 1979. Richie was in the hospital, in traction, and was not able to participate in the Tribute to Lowell at the Forum in LA.
