Little Garden (Arc Review)

One of my favorite things about Little Garden was how Zoro and Sanji had started a competition with one another over the same thing as the Giants (who manged to catch the largest animal while hunting), and haven't stopped fighting with each other since. Maybe the giant's feud was Oda foreshadowing the giant feud between Zoro and Sanji that's been persisting throughout the series ever since?

One thing I like about Little Garden, in retrospect, is that it sets up Usopp properly as wanting to visit Elbaf and become a true brave warrior of the sea. The Arlong arc is his dawning realisation of what he wants, but Little Garden puts it in front of him and gives him the physical representation of what he is aspiring to be. I also love how it produces that massive goldfish thing at the end, as if to set up all those lies and stories he told Kaya, back in Syrup Village, are starting to become true. They're becoming real stories of his adventures out on the sea. I like that.

Little Garden introduced the rivalry between Sanji & Zoro; therefore, this is one of the most important arcs in One Piece history.

Though Sanji didn't play a major role, he did get the crew an eternal compass to Alabasta after Luffy break the one handed to him by the lovely Miss All Sunday. If not for him, the crew would have spent a year or so waiting for their compass to register Little Garden.

This arc contained one of my favorite moments of the series; Mr. 5 using his ability to make explosive bullets. Him blowing into the chambers of a revolver and using it to fire exploding bullets was awesome and the first time in the series a devil fruit was so creatively used. It was early on in the series and there were less than a dozen devil fruits introduced. Each of them was very much what you see is what you get.

Although Sanji wasn't focused on much in this arc, I think he absolutely made up for it at the end. He not only made contact with Mr. 0, but he also got the eternal pose which saved Vivi's ass. However, it's too bad that Sanji screwed up by giving a false report to Mr. 0. But that last scene with Sanji honestly blew my mind. I loved how Mr. 0 pretended to brush over the false report, but then secretly sent an assassin after Mr. 3. This arc was a lot, lot better than Whiskey Peak and Reverse Mountain. Can't wait to see what happens next in OP.

This arc was awesome for me because Mr. 5 was awesome and I wanted to see more. Ms. Golden week was also a character with an extremely unique fighting style and I couldn't have asked for anything better to follow the equally as awesome whiskey peak

No comment on the fact how this is one story-arc, which was completely erased by 4kids from anime-version's English localisation, just so they could introduce Chopper sooner? I suppose it hardly matters anymore and everyone would rather just forget it ever happened, but considering that was arguably atleast as bad as removing Laboon, i think it warrants a mention.

Sanji not being within the arc that much also gives him a comical joke later after water seven taking advantage of the fact his not seen much. Thus he gets a drawing of his face, and furthering the joke more so when it is reveled to be someone else's face.

I do like the set ups this arc brings: not only the existence of Giants and Elbaf, but also Mr. 3's usage in more arcs ("helping" in Alabasta and of course in Impel Down), the giants we meet at Enies Lobby and even Hajrudin since he wants to reconnect with these 2 legends. Got admit, when i think back to this arc, i like alot it offers.

Thinking about the antagonists of this arc, Mr 5 and Miss Valentine never really shone in this arc either. As first devil fruit users of Grand Line, they were supposed to be threatening, especially given their power, but they really never stood out a chance (especially Miss Valentine which was knocked out after a single attack, and also becoming the damsel in distress during the cover arc - why is she so arrogant provided her weakness? And I don't want to put a blame on her since she was one of my favourite female antagonists of the manga when I was younger :o) Mr 3 clearly gives up his partner, and I always wondered why. I understand for Mr 5 and Miss Valentine since he clearly disdains them, but he had no reason other than disloyalty to let his sixteen years old partner on a island filled with giants. Actually I'm kinda surprised that Miss Goldenweek, Mr 5 and Miss Valentine managed to live several months in Little Garden, living among the two giants they attempted to kill.

Little Garden arc: 7/10. It's by no means perfect, I too really don't like Mr.3 here and think Mr.5 and Miss Valentine are a bit under-utilized, but it still has some great moments, especially with Dory and Brogi and with Usopp's development. Personally, one of my favourite aspects of this arc is Sanji doing his solo thing in Mr.3's house and talking to Mr.0/Crocodile... and then killing the Unluckies. That was awesome in and of itself.
