Cool, my nephews & I have discussed doing a catenary system, either in Marklin's Z scale or this HO M-track.

With all my respect. The catenary must not bend when cornering. The catenary wire is always straight between the two masts. In straight lines the posts have to be placed alternately one on each side of the track. In this way in the straight lines the catenary describes a smooth zigzag. This is to ensure the pantographer's contact. On few occasions a curved catenary wire is put in place, and for this, tensioners are used to force the curve. Anyway, very good tutorial. I've been following you for a long time. Congratulations.

Hi, It is always good to get comments/feedback. I think your comment applies to the latest version of the Märklin catenary system (for the current C- and K-track systems), which has been engineered to work the way you suggest and is more in line with the real world. This was an improvement over the M-track catenary system. With the old M-track catenary I am using, you have no other choice than bending overhead wires, the available wires are too long, and wouldn't be aligned properly. The Märklin manual even instructs the user to do this, see page 2 of the manual "Catenary system for 5100/5200 Series Track"where you will find the relevant information. Many thanks for your visit, your compliments and comments, take care.

@@The3rdRail You are surely right. I am not familiar with the old Marklin M system. On the other hand, I really like your channel and it has made me appreciate the M system. I think I'll push it into the hidden part of the layout I'm building. Thanks for sharing your work.

I just bought some 2nd hand marklin catenary, i plan to use it for 2 different trains, steam/diesel and electric, but when i hook it up to a other transformer it doesn't work, but when i plug the red wire out of the track (the brown one stays) and put the wire of the catenary in, it does work, there also was a brown wire included in the feeder mast, did i do something wrong? Hope you can help! Jesse

You need common ground for this to work. Both brown connections from the transformers need to be connected to the same circuit. You’d have to make sure your transformers are in phase too, see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6W8oJVnba-HiNU You can use a lightbulb instead of the voltmeter (bright light = out of phase). Good luck.

Can you work digital locos through the overhead lines so you can run a few locos at a time like you can when using the normal track system.
@The3rdRail
@The3rdRail 2 жыл бұрын
If you mean running your digital locos in analogue mode using a transformer, yes. Provided of course your digital locos have working pantographs, which is not always the case with newer models. Märklin doesn't recommend having working overhead lines in a full digital setup, but it is also possible.

@@The3rdRail So you can't work a digital system through the overhead lines like you can through the Track.I was hoping to work my D/C digital locos through the overhead lines on Marklin A/C track.Otherwise I will need a separate track for my D/C digital locos etc
@The3rdRail
@The3rdRail 2 жыл бұрын
Your comment got marked as spam for some reason. Some people do run their DC digital locos with overhead lines, but Märklin doesn't recommend this way of doing things (see their user manuals). Best is to give it a try on a small section and see what happens...

can I feed DC current on the catenary to run DC train while run AC current to run AC train at the same time?
@anapink2446
@anapink2446 11 ай бұрын
I meant AC current on the 3-rail track.
@The3rdRail
@The3rdRail 11 ай бұрын
Yes, people do this to run 2-rail electric locos on 3 rail track in digital, but analogue DC would run only in one direction. The track can only be connected to - and the catenary to +. You can test on a small section of track first if you want to check.

Why are the connecting rings open on one side? I guess it is for protecting for more damage when an accidinent happens. Not with the train, but with your three year old son, or yourself. 😄

no idea... may be to allow the thin spriing wires to slides though if you need to re position them.
