I have very sad news and am heartbroken. Little Oreo was doing phenomenally well all week after her tooth trim and was eating a lot. She was getting stronger and looked like she was going to make it. And then a few days ago she took a turn for the worse, did not want to eat, did not swallow her syringe food and started laying on her side. Her owner reported a huge lump in her neck which I am almost sure was Cervical lymphadenitis which is an infection most commonly due to Streptococcus zooepidemicus, but may also be due to Streptobacillus moniliformes or other Streptococcus spp. This is why I always check deep inside the neck of all guinea pigs that visit and come for a health check, all incoming and outgoing animals get a check up as well. Since she was already so compromised her little body stood no chance against an aggressive invading bacteria. You were and are much loved little Oreo! You are a special little girl.🌻🌻🌻❤

You are so amazing Saskia. If only we had one of you in every city. You should start a training program and offer people the opportunity to learn from you and maybe earn a certificate through your rescue. You could do it mostly online and then maybe a couple of days in person at the rescue. I am sure people would be happy to pay for this type of education (maybe even some professionals, like vets). "If you build it they will come"!

@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue I had no idea! No wonder you reminded me of him. Besides your natural talents for caring for these little creatures he must have imparted his skills of the trade with you as well. Piggie potions - try ebay ! I randomly met Peter Gurney in the London underground and he had a basket with a guinea pig in it with him. I got to talking with him and a few days later I went to his South London Bedsit to meet the guinea pigs. He then became a much loved friend! And yes he taught me everything he knew. I also did some PR for his books when a new one came out. He was quite a prolific writer. I miss him very much. ❤🌻

One of the best investments I've ever made was a julienne peeler. This makes "grass-shaped" veg pieces that a pig can take up with their lips and chew with their back teeth, so they can get solid food while recovering their front teeth function.

I have to applaud your willingness to help these small animals in need. That said, a visit to a vet is always a good idea, someone who would have anesthesia or acepromazine which could be administered to lower stress and allow easier access to the mouth. Also, the animal could have blood/stool /urine tests for infection, as well as x-rays. Yes, it's way more expensive, but the amount of knowledge you can gain from a single doctor's visit can often help avoid worse problems down the road. It's possible the infection was already present and in her weakened state, finally had the opportunity to become critical. Bless you all for your commitment to animal well-being.

This channel restores my faith in humanity. Good luck, Oreo! One of mine has a bit of a crooked snaggletooth.... I've been wondering that, do I need to take him to get his teeth tidied up, so when I saw guinea pig teeth in a video BOOM I was on it. 7:50 LOL My daughter and I tried some of the different kibbles the piggies eat the other day. She spit them out but I ate mine no problem. Tasted a lot like that grass powder drink I have every day, actually. The alfalfa had more of a lingering bitter after taste that the Timothy pellets lacked. Critical Care costs a lot.

This reminds me of a little guy I had who died young (only 2.5 years old). He was small and never seemed to grow much. Then after 2 years of age started to develop what I thought were diabetes-like symptoms, drinking constantly and weeing all the time. By the time I took him to the vet he was already critically ill and very bony. Despite treatment he died the next day. I now keep a diary and weigh my piggies twice a week. RIP Rufus! 😪❤

I’m so glad they took her to see Saskia but I really wish people would take their animals to the vet more often! Especially when they KNOW something is wrong 😢 so glad Saskia took care of her though!!! It’s so important for exotic animals to go to the vet! Small animals don’t have “wait and see” periods like cats and dogs do, it’s important to always act fast and get them seen ASAP!❤️

You took such good care of her and she didn't make it, so sad. I had a piggie that wouldn't eat salt spools and she died of a goiter (tumor on her thyroid gland). But she was pretty elderly too, over 7 years-old. A warning to people who want a pig, the big pet store chains in the OK,TX, KS areas use one breeder and their pigs have been in-bred too much and tend to develop breast tumors both boars and sows, but especially the sows get huge tumors that can invade the intestines. My last two from PET-R-US (not a real name) developed tumors that are effectively inoperable. The surgeries are a success, but the patient dies...:(( You are so kind and caring for our little friends, thank you so very much.

I have 2 guinea pigs and one is breaking out into grey patches on his nose and inner ear it’s dry and flaky and sometimes bleeds it also caused his hair to go away my mom said it’s a fungus so we got a cream and an anti fungal shampoo. Do you have anymore advice to what we should do
@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a typical case of Ringworm . Here is the at home treatment protocol. What is ringworm? Ringworm is fairly common in guinea pigs so don’t freak out! It is a fungus that often presents on the outside and inside of the ears, around the eyes and on the nose. Though it can appear anywhere on their body it is most often discovered in those areas. It is the same as Athlete’s Foot in humans. Ringworm most often does not require veterinary assistance and simple over the counter creams and shampoo can clear it up. It is highly contagious however, so wash your hands after touching the guinea pig and wear an apron of some sort to prevent spores clinging to your clothing. Where do they get it from? They can get it from another infected guinea pig but it can also develop in a guinea pig that has not had any recent interactions with other animals at all. They simply carry the spores with them and in times of stress or a diminished immune system the fungus can get the overhand. This sometimes happens in a cage with two animals living together. Only one will get the fungus and the other animal remains totally unaffected. (The same goes for lice and mites) How do you treat it? 1) Any anti dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders, Nizoral etc. Though if the infestation is bad we recommend buying this shampoo “Davis Miconazole” you can get it at Amazon - amzn.to/2LY7n8K 2) Over the counter medicated athlete’s foot cream SHAMPOO - First of all wash the guinea pig the medicated anti dandruff shampoo Put a small towel in the sink to prevent slipping and use lukewarm water, lather them up real good and let the shampoo sit for 2 minutes and then rinse. You must wash the face and ears also. Make sure to pay special attention to the affected areas and rub the shampoo into the skin. Most guinea pigs do not like to be bathed but this is something that needs to be done. After you towel dry the animal really well you must blow dry them. Never put a wet or damp guinea pig back in its cage. It will take a long time before they dry by themselves. They will get catch a cold and get sick. Do this for once weekly for three weeks. CREAM - Apply the cream directly on the affected area and make sure you really press the cream into the skin where the fungus is located. Do this twice daily for three weeks. I have other guinea pigs do I treat them too? Yes and no. If they are not showing signs of the fungus then there are obviously no spots to put a cream. However, you do want to shampoo them with the anti dandruff medicated shampoo to make sure they stay healthy. You should only do that once or twice in the three weeks it takes to treat an infected guinea pig. Do I need to disinfect the cage? I have found that treatment of the individual animal(s) is enough. Though it never hurts to disinfect a cage. Use part water and part bleach. Let it soak for a few minutes and rinse off really well.
