@dj1200 You shouldn't feel stupid. They wanted him because he did look very much like Desi Arnaz. He was also a child prodigy on the drums. Notice they never gave little Ricky screen credit, very likely because they wanted people to think he WAS their child. They couldn't use Desi Jr. because they wanted the baby Lucy had to get older faster, so they had to hire a child to play him. I heard Desi Jr. say this in an interview.

@dj1200 If you notice the closing credits on "I Love Lucy," they never listed the credits as almost all sitcoms do. An announcer comes on and does a voice-over stating the names of the guest cast. This made it easier for them not to credit Richard Keith as Little Ricky. The announcer merely never mentioned him. He looked so much like Desi, many people assumed that he was the baby Lucy gave birth to, without stopping to think that the baby Lucy gave birth to could not be this age this soon. For some odd reason, this is the way Lucy and Desi wanted it.

Lucy was born on August 6,1911. That means that she was 40 years old when they started I Love Lucy in September 1951. Certainly one of the prettiest and sweetest stars of all time. I was born in '55 and remember the first time I saw her. It was a morning rerun in 1959, the one where she was flown by helicopter to the cruise ship that she missed. I said, " She looks like mommy". My Mom was a beauty too. Mom is still with us, she's 86 now.

Excellent memory Bob. Glad your mom is doing well. I’m a 1952 baby and my earliest memory is Lucy in the chocolate factory. It is my firm belief there is an ILL episode for every part of life: NYC apartment, outgrowing it when kids and dogs and cats arrive, moving to the country where the silence is deafening and even as aspect of show business. Great show, great writers, great memories.

1:00, you know, as much as we all know how much Ricky is seriously pushed over the edge by his wife, not only does he love Lucy, no matter what, but I JUST love how they are at least plenty of simple things he can actually agree with her on. I love how they usually have a pretty mutual agreement on how to raise their son. I LOVE THAT!

I never realized that Lucy was around 38 years old when she had Ricky! Which was really old back then. In the episodes where it was black and white she appears younger than mid 30's.

Of course she looked great, back then people actually got off their asses and did something. If this was on TV now she'd be covered in make up, be criticized for her weight and age, and just not look at all like she does here. Back in the day women could look beautiful even with out make up. Today that's true too, but so many have skin problems because poor diet and feeling self conscious of others they just pile it on.

That little boy that played the part of little Ricky was not her real son in real life, it was one of the women that worked on the show son that they use in the snow. after the lady had the baby he played the part of little Ricky, you can read it in their biography his real name was Keith thibodanus
