People are here in 2022 to listen, STILL, to some of the best music in the world recorded by the Little River Band. And the songs we are listening to are still almost exclusively the songs that Glen Shorrock recorded. The Glen years were magical. We didn't need another Fleetwood, we needed LRB and the sound that we fell in love with. John Farnham was an incredible singer and hard to compare with Glen, with different strengths. I wish that we heard more from John in the US, in a band that fit his voice and style. I'd buy that too. Love both singers, but along with the 25+ million who bought his songs, Glen is the face and sound of LRB that we still look for to give us that comforting, groove, warm vocals, and the perfect blend that never gets tired.

John Farnham went solo after Little River Band and has had hits in Australia in the 80's and 90's. On you tube search Your the Voice, Take the Pressure Down and Two Strong Hearts. Your the Voice was a huge hit for Farnham in 1986. He's a very successful solo artist. Hes sung a duet with Olivia Newton John and he played Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. He's considered an icon here in Australia.

Clearly the change was the downfall of the band. I feel they needed to change their style as well, it they wanted to compete in the 1980s. After 1983, their albums had very little success. I'll give them credit, they were unstoppable from 1977 to the 1982/1983 timeframe.

Even in hindsight and having given all of LRB's albums a fair shake, I still am more moved by the early years. This after leaving this style of music for decades. The sad part about all of this is there was plenty of time for them to each have their own way and yet egos still got in the way. Never was a huge Farnham fan with this group. It added that show-boaty edge to the music that had turned me from other bands as well. The original was just raw, unique, and wreaked of collective and collaborative skill and talent. The Farnham era just seemed so predictably commercial, comparatively.

In another interview John Farnham says that being in LRB grew him up as an artist. He also says that the road crew was told to gaffer tape his microphone lead to the floor so he couldn’t move around the stage. I liked John in LRB, he brought a different sound to LRB, I also liked the sound of Shorrock in LRB. It’s interesting listening to this as in another interview Goble says that after infighting between Shorrock & Birtles he asked Shorrock to leave LRB & now Goble is saying that Birtles left LRB after infighting between Birtles & Farnham.

I agree with Graham, No Reins is their best album. And guess who sang half of the songs on that album? Wayne Nelson. Face in the Crowd, Time For Us, No Reins on Me, Thin Ice. I think John Farnham was already working on Whispering Jack at that time. He sang on It's Just a Matter of Time, When the War is Over, How Many Nights, Forever Blue, Paper Paradise, It Was the Night. Interesting, too, that when Glenn came back to the band, they made a fairly hard rocking album, Monsoon. John could have sung any of those songs, but Glenn is "the voice" of LRB, and he did fine on It's Cold Out Tonight, Parallel Lines, and others.

LRB did the second show in the new performing facility in my hometown. Nelson and Shorrock had quit two weeks before, and several others had left previously, so they had a new bass player, lead singer, keyboard and middle harmony, and drummer. Stevie Housden, not an original, was running the band and was the longest term member on stage. They were still, two weeks into a tour with new personnel, faithful to the songs and harmonies, and put on a great show.

@@welshieallovertheplace He sang them, but they didn't sound the same. The "magic" first and foremost from the beginning until Shorrock left was the combination of the voices of Glenn Shorrock, Beeb Birtles, and Graeham Gobel. Farnham was great, but it was never LRB again after Shorrock left. They SHOULD have chosen a different name for the band, and THEN kept going with their "new" sound. It was still a solid band with another great lead singer and great songwriting that could still have had mega monster WORLDWIDE hits, but the illusion that they could do that while still carrying on under the banner name of "The Little River Band" as if the sound hadn't changed doomed them. They had achieved putting magic in a bottle. Then egos and personal agendas loosened the grip bands on the working formula that the public loved, wanted, and paid their money for. The corporate money machine was only hungry to keep their "Cash Cow" producing no matter what and refused to acknowledge that bottled magic when they should have stepped in to give the band a well-deserved rest for a year or so to rest and gain perspective, but did not. Then the revolving door began turning. The bottle was dropped and shattered. The "magic" evaporated. Cheers

In my opinion….A lot of bands are stuck in a time period which is fine. The music changes with time and styles and now we have absolute garbage. These guys were and still are some of the best ever and after this era,was the eighties with rock in the the early eighties as well as synth music which was great music. Doesn’t matter what type and how good it is,if your not in the club of thee owners who put music on the airwaves then your not getting airtime, that’s the issue…the controllers of the airwaves and the decline of morality in the world itself.

Did Jimmy Barnes ever sing lead with LRB? Who sang lead on the song "If I Ever Get Lucky"? In the music video it looks like Barnes, but not sure of the sound.

No.I think that was Glenn But Stephen Prestwich from Cold Chisel played in LRB for a time. They did a version of When The War Was Over which he wrote.

I agree with Beeb! After Farnham joined the band, the quality of the songs went downhill. Bad move replacing Glen!

IMHO I think John Farnham is the greatest male vocalist ever, and he would have made it with or without LRB. I do agree that being a soloist was the best decision for him, though I do love his performances with Human Nature. LRB was a great band, and it is sad their time of fame was short.

Would be great if you could get John Farnhams take as well. He is very humble and easy going from interviews Ive seen.

John Farnham very sadly has had some serious treatment for (a seemingly small) cancer of the mouth. The surgeons had to remove part of his jawbone. So our beloved John is having a prolonged rehabilitation. (Hoping this is OK to post. Otherwise please remove.)

Very interesting interview. Other interviews I’ve heard left me with the misconception that Beeb and Goble were of the same mind and booted Shurrock out of the band. I really didn’t know Beeb left the group about a year after John Farnham arrived, and preferred Shurrock. I like both singers a lot, but agree with most commenters that Glenn was the better voice to fit LRB

Very interesting to hear this as a fan and fellow musician, from literally the first time they set foot in Europe. I loved the Net. The production of Time Exposure is not up to LRB standards even though George Martin was involved. But in all, I'm on the Beeb side. Farnham is fantastic but the whole dynamics changed with him. Glenn is the voice of LRB, just simply no doubt. It proves because he returned, but like they sang in their own song: One for The Road: "As we get older, we'll go our separate ways Look for better days, there maybe ain't a second chance" They predicted their future. I love CSN, the Eagles etc. But I don;t think LRB realizes that they ARE the top. Songs, recordings, musicians in the Band, the fabulous harmonies, NOBODY ever did better then them. And I have been in this business as long as they have. Too bad they could never really reconcile and keep recording together. They missed out and so did we, the fans :-(

The problem Graeham, is that the public preferred and still prefer the original Little River Band. And it sound's as though the original muso's do too.

It's not as "radio" as the prior records, but I thought The Net was a great album. IMO, by 1983, the world had moved on.

6 years, if you look, is kind of the 'sweet spot' for a band, so 1977-1983, perfect.

Yeah... he is great as a solo act but not so much in the LRB, as history had proven.
