Story 25: The Amazing BOHO DIY Kitchen Shelf!

Hello, friends! I'm not quite ready to do a cottage tour just yet, as I still have some layering of fun thrifted treasures (that I have yet to thrift!) But I want to share with you my favorite DIY project that I've done so far in this cottage. It's my little kitchen shelf ... and I love it SO much!
I also made THE most DELICIOUS bean brownies that are flour free and soooo yummy that it kind of blows my mind! Here's the recipe I worked off of in case you need a chocolate fix this weekend: joyfoodsunshin...

As an old flower child from the late 60's and early 70's and still one today in my heart, my home has always been like yours with an eclectic hodge-podge of found treasures and family heirlooms. At 71 I'm so glad I was able to keep many of my preciousies, considering how many times I've had to move. Especially loved the ending with you and wee little Charlie💞 Thanks for keeping me company. Hey pretty girl! I love love love the book shelf on the counter. That is genius. I have an old little book shelf that I inherited from my mother and I love it. I just didn’t know where to put it. Now I do, thank you very much 😊 And! I really love the thrifted dishes of all shapes and colours. I will be doing that for sure, because thrifting is the best. I have ugly old white dollar store dishes that I hate. I will save them for when the families comes up here for bbqs 🙂

It’s so lovely to see a home which is NOT cold, bare and minimalist. My home is (I’d say) a bit on the “overdoing Fall” side - especially for other people who do not like my ‘old fashioned’ taste. I don’t care. It gives me great joy to see my Chinese Lantern plant pods; dishes and vases of branches and leaves, Acorns, Pumpkins and all things autumnal …candles, pictures, china, etc…. So. Just wanted to say I love your cottage. It’s like HOME and surely that is what we folk, who live alone, love so much isn’t it? My favorite part of this is your repurposed book shelf into a kitchen shelf with the floral wallpaper. It is perfection! Missed match plates are such a cool collection. I am now 72 but this remind me of the 60s.... We didn't have or want Ikea or Target or Hobby Lobby. We thrifted everything . Or, we were given hand me downs from mom and grandma. We loved it all... we did cinderblock and wood shelving units for our stereos, books , Tvs,plants and chotchkies. Such simpler times, but we were so darn happy!

Very nice shelf! I love the wallpaper! The brownie recipe is something i may try. The beans are good for fiber and chocolate chips ! Yummy!I also live with coyotes. February and March is their mating with babies born in March. They normally don't want anything to do with humans unless they are hungry and try to go after a cat or a small dog. They can climb a 6 foot fence. I keep my Golden on leash because she will go after them. I carry a hiking stick. I walk in open spaces or hike the Bluffs so I can see a coyote. A hunting party is something that will make me turn and go the other day. Howling is not a sign They were successful with a hunt. They don't want to advertise they have a kill. Yes. I have seen obe single coyote bring down a young deer. I am enjoying your vlog and Charlie is a cutie 💓

Thank you for all that information! This is the first time I've lived with coyotes so close to me. I hear them every night because there is a well enclosed chicken coop across the street from us. Poor chickens make quite a racket but I believe are safe. But it's only recently that they seem to be interested in venturing over our way. You could put those large rings around the area of the fire pit standing up, wrapped in fairy lights. I think it might be a really pretty backdrop for your evenings. Also, I would be very careful at night, as Charlie would make a very yummy appetizer for any hungry Coyote. As for Charlie, get a "Gentle Lead" collar. We got one for our lab and he stopped pulling immediately. It does not hurt them, and it works immediately. The way it's designed is that as the dog moves if they start to pull the collar tilts their head down towards the ground and they immediately stop. It's amazing!

It is SO scary to me having the coyotes anywhere nearby with Charlie here ... I know they'd love to snatch him! As would the hawks that live above me here. It's coyote mating season. They'll lay off by mid-March. Late January through mid-March is when you should be extra-cautious of coyotes. But with Charlie always be aware, for sure. (I may be odd, but I like the coyotes in my backyard/field. They keep the rabbits under control, which have overrun our plot. I don't like what they do to unmonitored dogs/cats. People assume that fences = safe. That is not the case, even up to 6' heights!)

Oh...also, any food waste during this time/bad snows/cold weather will draw them in. Be careful with open compost, rotting veg left for other animals, etc. Just like my garbage-exploring dog, they'll eat what they can get.

What a beautiful sound the wolves howling. I love that. I had 3 Timber Wolves at home in Texas I raised them at 1 month old. 2 brothers & 1 sister. They were taught by me and my AKC Certified German Shepherd long haired. I was always well protected. Gentle beautiful fur babies. Aww SO happy to see another video!! 🤗 Your Cottage is coming so beautifully together!! 💕💕💕💕. We moved into Our 400 square foot Apartment in the Summer, I never realized how challenging it would be to find a small table. I searched the Thrift Stores, Facebook Marketplace and could not find anything that suited the small footage that I needed. I FINALLY found a Marble Looking Table for 2 at Walmart On Line! I am SO happy that it fits perfectly even with my Vintage Treasures! 🤗. I LOVE Thrifting and most of my Treasures are Thrifted, and I agree with you. It's like the House gives you a BIG HUG when you walk in 💕💕💕💕. Charlie is SO adorable!! We had a little Chihuahua named Angel. She was so cuddly. 💕💕💕💕 But she was a Runner. Those little legs were fast!! I unfortunately got really sick and could not care for her any longer. But she went to a good home on a Farm. So whenever I see little Charlie, he makes me SMILE 😊. We had a pipe freeze and then burst last weekend - we are in Putnam Co. I couldn't believe it said 2 degrees at one point ,not to mention the negative degrees! I too love mismatched dishes. I tend to buy soup plates. And I have several mugs and bowls. Typically I use a few for several months and grow tired of them. Charlie’s little head popping up to the sound of your keys was too cute. Mine does that to the sound of me putting on my shoes.😂 Yes to bean brownies! So good. My friend makes really good mousse with chocolate and avocados. You would never know there are avocados in it either.

I am very glad we don't have coyotes here in Ireland, that howling would constantly stress me!!! I love your shelf with the dishes (I have a very similar stack of saucers, had to stop buying them once I had more than 25!!!). You must be soooo happy that you decided to accept the "new" cottage, it's turning out so beautiful!!! Thank you for the recipe, always wanted to try bean brownies, but I don't really like baking (looks simple though!), besides I suppose, if they're as delicious as you're saying I would eat the whole lot at a time!!!! I carry bear spray with me whenever I go for a hike. Even in my own land anymore. When I was in my teens, I had a run-in with a mountain lion. Just last year, I walked out to my garden and came face with a black bear. And just a few weeks ago, the coyotes that had never come close to our home came before sunset attacks our neighbors, and there 2 lager dog and my kids. I am telling you something that makes a loud noise and bear spry saved us. Love your videos. Thank you for sharing and stay safe.

That must have been so scary!!!!! They all seem to be getting a bit more ambitious these days ... I guess because they have less and less space to roam free.

@@littlebohocottage Everyone but the dogs were ok. One of the smaller dogs had to be put down. It was so very sad. When talking to games/fish or the wildlife ranger whatever their title was it was though because of the fires that have been taking place in the PNW or the packs are growing too big and need to be thinned.

Your dishes brought back a memory and made me laugh. I also use mixed dishes, I had company over for a meal and used the mixed plates. The next thing I know they came back with a brand new set of dishes LOL I had them return them as this is how I roll! Love you wall paper in the cabinet and the curtains. Fudge looks great!
