Had great success with peppermint for rodents. Just remember , mice run along edges of things. So really focus on wall edges , boxes , bins etc. Also a must for storage sheds, attics , basements, all kinds (especially rented)..refresh as needed. NAMESTE🙏

The old farm ladies told me when I first came to the farm to hang my cabbages from the root on the ceiling which saves space for other things and also seems to keep them for a longer time . Because the leaves are not touching anything

I always enjoy seeing your garden. It is true that some people underestimate what can be grown in northern climates. I am in eastern Alberta in a zone 3a. My spaghetti squash did great this year. I picked one a few days ago that was almost 9lbs. Our summer has been very cold; my tomatoes are still slowly producing fruit and only a few have ripened so far. This morning Aug30 we got our first light frost. I find every year my garden gets bigger and more productive as my skills improve. Watching channels like yours has helped.

So you make salve with your comfrey? It's such a great plant. Comfrey roots and leaves contain allantoin, a substance that helps new skin cells grow, along with other substances that reduce inflammation and keep skin healthy. Comfrey ointments have been used to heal bruises as well as pulled muscles and ligaments, fractures, sprains, strains, and osteoarthritis.

Your Potatoes and Cabbages are amazing. I love your harvest. We have had two years of drought and heat here in our region. Great for the tomatoes but not for the root vegetables and cabbages ... Nice greetings

Yes Chelsey I feed all of my spent leaves from my garden to the chicken, sheep and goats. Even the tough roots of the cabbage family I will shake all the soil off of, crush them with a large hammer and feed them to the sheep and goats as well. Not only is it very good for them but it gives them roughage as well. Also you can dehydrate all of those leaves from the cole crops, beets, carrots or any other greens and once they are dehydrated pulverize them in your food processor for storage. You can then use their yummy goodness in soups, stews, stir fries, etc. I have been watching Lorella's channel from before they moved to her parents land and lived in LA. God Bless Joe

Once you're done harvesting and processing, it would be interesting to see a full tour of your fall pantry and cellar. You can check back on the 'stock' when spring comes, and so forth. Just think about it, maybe a ''stop motion'' of your pantry and cellar over a year, with a picture taken every day 😃

❤️ you wouldn’t believe how many times one of us has said to the other, this would make great post back onto Instagram...but we haven’t actually pulled the trigger. We are actually butchering 5 pigs this weekend and just had 14 piglets born earlier this week (all easily, alive and well which was such a blessing!) that we would have loved to share! We really miss the community but aren’t great at not letting it be a time suck for us 🤦🏼‍♀️

Little Mountain Ranch Things are good just sooooo busy! The big move is just 30 ish days away and I’m a mess. LOL Sooooo much I’ve accumulated over the years. Ugh 😑 Who knew I was a hoarder? Hahahaha 30 years of life! Trying to sort it all out...AHHHHHHHH I think my head may explode 🤯. Plus I’m leaving two grandoodles behind and gaining the other two. The two that will still be in Ohio are laying the guilt on thick too. Not in a bad way just melting my heart. Your garden has given you so much food! Congratulations. It sure feels good when your hard work pays off, doesn’t it? I didn’t know about mint repelling mice. I’ll try it. Harvest your comfrey a few times each summer. Cut it down to the ground and either chop and drop it or add it to your compost. It grows back quickly and vigorously. That gives you multiple amounts of comfrey’s goodness for your garden. Add a bit of sulphur in the fall to prevent scab on your spuds. The sulphur needs time to break down to become available for next year. Sulphur changes the soil Ph to the acid side ( lower than 7 which is neutral)

Wow, I find your videos so inspirational! We have moved house and this year our harvest has been disappointingly minimal! I feel like it will take this year as a learning curve to know what does well here. So far we know we’re good for tomatoes and onions.. Don't be too disheartened, friend. It took me a few years to be able to have a fruitful garden, and every year I learn something new and get better at it. One of the biggest things I've learned lately is about what a partnership between nature and the gardener gardening is. Pay attention to how things grow in what areas of your garden, watch the bugs and try to plant to attract as many beneficial ones to your garden as you can, mix things up, nature loves diversity, and this is going to sounds a little bit hokey, but love that space up. 💚

I watched you cutting the beet tops all the way down to the beet. Unfortunately removing the stems this far down to the beet will make the beet bleed it's color from the beet when you cook it. I made this mistake once and then after questioning why this was the reason. Loving watching your amazing knowledge and I am excited to learn from you. The peppermint idea is a great one for sure. Maybe using the peppermint down the rows will keep those pesky mice and other little critters away...even some of the insects that are not crazy about peppermint too! I love how you are incorporating all of the beautiful flowers in your garden as well which also promotes the bees and butterflies. It's a "SECRET GARDEN" USING PLANTS THAT LOVE ONE ANOTHER"! I’m so glad you’re enjoying my videos.😊 I cut my beets like that for storage because if I don’t they sprout. Fortunately, they seem to dry out enough so they don’t bleed when I cook them. I do leave a longer too for fresh cooking though. ‘See’ you soon.

Try the sourcrout with garlic and Dill I also add cucumbers and zucchini and oh my tastes like Dill pickles yumyum I am picky with it but....this I love love :-)

So so beautiful. Thank you! As far as the size of the beets, one thing might be being crowded too close to another beet. I've heard that can affect the end size. Another youtube-r takes all kinds of leaves from the garden and dries and crumbles them and uses them in soups,stews, etc. also medicinally. Also flowers and fruit to make vinegars. How do bees survive -30* ?

I dehydrate a ton too, for exactly those purposes. Works so well!! I think you're right about crowding - I didn't do a great job thinning anything this year. As long as the humidity stays low bees can survive even colder temps. We provide a wind break too.

Welcome to my channel! No, thankfully we don't have a huge issue with pests in our area. I fertilize my garden with our own cow/horse manure compost and deep mulch. We don't have an issue with slugs here so mulch works well in our area.

Do you know with all the turnip greens and extra leaves off the cabbages and anything else that’s green if you wash them real well and dehydrate them you can then grind them and make your own green powder to put in your smoothies. You can use lettuce and spinach anything that’s green. I’ve been doing it and it works really well and you know what’s in it you know it’s organic instead of buying green powder from the store and paying mega prices for it .

I’m sensitive to histamines so I can’t have sauerkraut or nearly any lactobacillus. So no yogurt or kombucha, citrus etc. 😭 I love those things. Hopefully soon my DAO gene will tolerate it!!! Beautiful harvest!

If you don’t let house pets in the root cellar you can be generous with powered hot pepper. You will not have a mouse or rat problem at all. My dad had storages with his collection of books. He had pallets on the floor and a lot of powered hot pepper all over the floor. Even though other people in the storage had a mouse problem they would not come in his at all.

Little Mountain Ranch Be careful as once my dad set the jar on top of the open garage door and forgot it was up there. When he closed it, the hot pepper came down in his face. He said lucky he had bottled water in the car to wash his eyes out with.

I'm not realy sure but I have been told that the realy bumpy and contorted potatos should not be used as seed potatos because they are often that way because of viruses. They should be separated and eaten first and no part of them should be composted or put on garden soil. Not something I know for sure but I don't take the chance.

Because they are going into a root cellar. If I left them on the would sprout early. You do want to leave around an inch on when you boil them fresh so you don’t lose colour.

Silly, but I really miss your pigs :-) We plant mint to deter ants. Whenever I see ants taking over a section of my garden, I transplant a mint or chop up a bunch into the soil in that area

True if I were to cook them right away, but I haven't found that to be the case for root cellar storage. They need to be cut low so they don't rot or sprout - they seem to form a scab of sorts during storage and don't bleed much at all.

We’ve been working on getting out of pigs for the last year, and just a few weeks ago our last one left the ranch. We have tons of reason why we made this choice, but the long and short of it is that we were spreading ourselves too thin and we were at the risk of burnout. I can do a video on this if you’d like?
