If you have the room, store brown rice and all flours in the fridge. Not only does it kill weevil eggs, but it increases the longevity and nearly completely removes the risk of it going rancid.

great job i use buckets as i could get them free at bakeries i find storing pasta popcorn any flour or grains even rice i stick three bay leaves on top of product then place lid on label and date i put wood between basement floor and food so moisture doesn't draw up into my containers, i store wheat berries that i grind when i am ready to use this keeps over twenty five yrs but once ground clock starts ticking so i only grind what i need i live in central iowa where we have lots of humidity and so this is why i take these steps sooooo glad you showed yeast in the freezer i have never had it go bad i keep a qt jar of it in the frig and never had it go bad and it keeps yrs and yrs and yrs. i so enjoy all you are doing and have done

I’ve thought about doing that but I’m intimidated by the extra work. We bake daily so I don’t know if it’s realistic. I should probably get a grinder anyway.

@@LittleMountainRanch I know they can be costly mine was a gift from my sister as most of my looms www.frugalmeasures.blogspot.com is a blog I do with my daughter where we talk storing food and learning skills lots of recipes lots on breads canning drying, vac sealing. It doesn't take much to grind it I keep a jar of wheat berries in a jar by the grinder the rest are in buckets withe three Bay leaves on the wheat berries one perk of grinding when you get ready to use it is warm after grinding and rises faster I tell people to learn to make bread by hand once they get that done then get several used bread machines but don't bake it in them. to use dough setting and when done and raised take out and form rise again and bake frugalmeasures.blogspot.com/2019/08/monday-message.html scroll down to the turquoise booklet the recipes follow that she uses king Arthur bread flour but I can't afford that so I make my own I keep vital wheat gluten in my storage vac sealed so to one cup of flour you add 1 tsp vital wheat gluten I had a taste of hers and mine identical. But we came up to varieties and putting in jars as a mix to grab fast the recipe I did by hand and by bread machine identical enjoy looking about and gathering info even burger bun Light an yummy

Chelsea Happy New Year to you and your family. If you want a oxygen free environment for some of your food storage use dry ice. Dry ice is very cold because it is solid carbon dioxide. I use a lot of it (especially for storing grain). Just add a cube to a small container but do not seal it up. As the dry ice sublimes it will force all of the air out of the container so you may see the lid bobbing up and down. CO2 is heavier than air so there will be no problem with the CO2 escaping. When you see the dry ice cube has disappeared you may then seal the container. I have been using it for a long time and it works great. God Bless Joe

I don’t get into our finances on this channel much, but the short answer is, yes, he makes a good income, but we are also very thrifty and keep the grocery bill low by raising a ton of our own food. I cook pretty much exclusively from scratch, which is a huge cost savings. Our goal is to be completely debt free (excluding our mortgage) by November which will also help a ton.

@@LittleMountainRanch if space permits I think I'll try growing some pickling cucumbers, dill & green beans so that I have nearly everything I need for pickling them. I'll likely throw in a tomato plant in there somewhere. My biggest experiment will be attempting to grow luffa gourds in a less than ideal climate in a very tiny space - we're thinking a vertical trelis on the side of the house. I'll send you pics for sure (if there's anything to see that is.)

Hi Chelsea, love the tour.....in fact, I'm jealous😊 I have a pantry in my kitchen it's not very large. Space in our home is limited. I believe eventually we'll build a larger pantry in the dining room and do away with our dining room.

Instead of buying wholewheat flower which goes rancid and has to be purchased in smaller bags as you explain, how about buying the grains themselves and investing in a good quality mill? Mockmill springs to mind (as I own one ;-)) as it has proper grinding stones rather than metal chippers. I also have a non-electrical, hand-powered backup mill which I used for several years as my main mill. Really tastes great if you grind your wheat, spelt, etc. right before you use it.

You shouldn't store food items directly on the floor. Ordors tend to transfer though plastic and paper. Also the danger of flooding exists in basements. Just build a small (4" or so) shelf to elevate your food storage off of the floor. Great job gathering and preserving.

johnny mayo dont open them.if the power outage is just for a day or two a fully stocked freezer will be fine. Laying a warm blanket over the top helps with lowering heat infiltration around the lid. Do you find Horizon to be better priced than Superstore, Walmart and Costco? Or is it the size of packages or convenience of having it shipped that made you decide to order from them? I did some comparison of the products I buy regularly and found it to be cheaper at the store. Also, love that you’re attempting to grow more. Me too! Last year I entered every receipt from groceries into a spread sheet, broken down into each item just to see where our money was going. I can save over $2000 a year if I grew all our own produce and preserved more of it for winter. So I’m on a mission this year. Can’t wait to see what you do! Thank you for sharing. Happy New Year

Because we have to travel for 3.5 hours to get to the nearest Costco and I get free shipping with Horizon it works out to be the same. We don’t have a Superstore here, but we do have a small Wholesale Club where I do buy from. Yay for growing more! It’s a journey, so don’t get overwhelmed by trying to do it all at once. I’m 10 years in and just now feeling like I am figuring it out. 😊

That makes perfect sense! Also, there might be a difference in prices from province to province. I didn’t think of that at first. I have a request! If you are looking for video ideas... I would love to see some more of your meals you cook with your stored veggies and other foods. I’m trying to eat more from our pantry and love getting ideas from like-minded folks. And... lol one more thing, do you store grain and use a grain mill? I grew an acre of wheat last year for the chickens feed but thinking of growing 4-5 acres this summer and using it rather than buying flour. If any other commenters/viewers have any recommendations on mills, that would be wonderful. ✌🏻

If someone else has already asked, apologies, but I didn't see it. Do you have a back up plan for your freezers if there is a power outage. I've worried about having a freezer full of meat and then losing power. Granted we live in Southern Calif, so normally things are quite warm, and an unplugged freezer thaws fairly quickly.

Hi Chelsea, thanks for the informative videos! My question to you is: do you have a way of keeping track of everything you store? A list? Excel spreadsheet ?? Or can you remember it all? Speaking for myself, I have a hand-written list hanging in my kitchen where I try to record the contents of my deep-freeze and scratch them off as I go (or add more too). It isn't perfect but I would be lost without it. I don't have anything for the bulk items in my pantry and occasionally end up wasting food by forgetting about it which is annoying. Any tips on how to maintain a good overview of all that stored food? Many thanks, Christina
@LittleMountainRanch

That’s an area I could really improve upon. I go through my pantries regularly and because I shop from them daily it’s not often something goes to waste, but lists would be better.

I’m surprised that you don’t store wheat berries and grind your own flour fresh. As soon as flour is ground it starts to loose nutrients.

In the root cellar wrapped in newspaper. Carrots just in bins. I have a video where I show doing it in sand, which also works well.

You know I love you Chelsea but don’t be so apologetic. You are not sitting in a studio, light and sound won’t be perfect and that’s ok. Wheat stores better as whole berries. Grind what you need when you need it. I know it’s an additional step in food prep but it extends shelf life by a lot. Now when you say 6 months of food storage, is that 6 months at its lowest point ? At what interval do you restock? Personally I think 24+ months of storage should be the goal. Remember the wildfires you had? If you loose an entire years worth of growing opportunity you might find yourself with the larder nearly empty and nothing to replace it with. Being able to cover two bad years and a bumper crop in the third would make me feel the most comfortable. Love your pantry videos. And looking forward to that greenhouse and more abundance.

I’m Canadian so apologizing is in my blood - I can’t help it! Lol I should have made it more clear - we have 6 months if we couldn’t go to the store right now for 6 months. Keeping in mind we also have 100% of our eggs, dairy and meat covered off of the farm. This will last us way longer than that being that we still go the store weekly. I restock as needed. I’m aware my system could use some fine tuning and probably some better record keeping, but a person can only do so much. I’ve learned to take it easy on myself and just do the best I can. Thanks for being here!

I don't think the knee problem has anything to do with age. You're most probably straining them yourself. I'm a lot older than you an no longer have pain in my knees since I learned how to stoop, climb, run, etc. without straining my knees. Just a FYI...

I agree with Lauren Perry, you are beautiful and that hair is just delightful! I don't know if this would help you but I have seen people perserve flour in two ways: 1. My mom and sister would store unopened and opened bags of flour in the freezer, that worked really well. I know that might be impractical when you feed that many people but if you used the cold weather to your advantage, the possibilities are interesting. 2. I have watched videos of people who "can" flour. They use half gallon mason jars, here is a link to the one I watched: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHe7XmyCablondE
