I have been struggling with what to do about my weed-infested garden this year, but Dan and I finally decided that it has changed how I feel about the garden this year, and I'm really excited about it. I also had to pull up all my garlic, replant it in a new spot, and made some delicious peach cobbler. I hope you enjoy coming along with me!

I'm a little behind on your latest videos, hurrying to catch up, but it's so lovely to see all your new plants and gardens! As you said, it really went from cold wet winter directly into full summer weather with barely a pause for spring. I'm on the west coast of BC and it was basically an overnight transformation, followed by a mad scramble to get all the gardening stuff done that we thought we'd have plenty of time for. Oh, well! Re your bunnies, I don't know if you've looked into it already, but you could easily get the female spayed and not have to worry about penning her anymore. It's no different from a cat, any vet can do it and it costs basically the same, ~$250. I've had numerous pairs of rabbits as pets and always just got the females spayed right away so it would never be a concern. Also cuts down on any fighting that might be happening!

I transplanted some garlic into a raised bed, that I had missed harvesting last year and teased the individual plants apart, that had sprouted up this Spring, but they never really grew. They didn't die, but they are small. Good Luck!

Chelsea, thank you so much for the tilling explanation in this video. I just got a plot in our local community garden, and have been trying to transition it to a no till space over a couple weeks. But I have kids and a house to keep, and it has been so stressful to try to do that well. Instead of cutting corners and doing it wrong, I am now deciding (because of your explanation!!) to just till it this year. Thank you for sharing your why! As it helped me see that I need to set my priorities straight!

I'm a big fan of tilling. It makes planting so very easy. I still top dress with loads of compost, and mulch heavily, but then I till it all in the next spring. It's absolutely delightful.

We would like to get to a point where we can have a no till garden as well, but as our ground is mostly gravel we feel we need to remove the rocks to a certain depth, and from then on we can stop digging. Planting into rocky ground is so frustrating and time consuming. I imagine this process will take us several more years as we are digging by hand, but I look forward to the day when I can just throw an inch of compost on all my beds and start planting into soft healthy soil. No till is so idyllic :)

My mum was a great gardener, and she used some the bait my dad used when he went fishing, mostly small fish, and every start to the season's planting when the soil was turned she added some fish to the soil. Because she seen it as the perfect chemical free slow release fertilizer, she used it for years and years because it had no chemicals at all.

The wonderful thing about gardening is that you can literally do WHATEVER YOU WANT. There is no right way or wrong way. You must do what is best for you and your situation. I find it somewhat insulting that we live in an age where everyone must explain the rationale behind the methods in which they choose to grow their own gardens. Your gardens are always gorgeous and productive and, at the end of every day, that is all that ever matters. The ultimate goal is to be less dependent on others and more reliant on ourselves. If you're accomplishing the goals you've set for yourself, no matter how you go about it, you've won. And you owe nothing to anyone.

No-till can be a great system, but the key word is 'system'. If the different steps don't work you (including set up & maintenance) then it's smart to pick a different system. 😁 I've had luck setting up individual raised beds as no-till in spots with little or no top soil. Because we have clay I did initially double-dig & amend with dead leaves & smallish sticks. Because it started out as just clay there wasn't a heavy weed seed load. Then kept it covered in heavy layer of wood mulch. Worked well until the year we got a load of mulch contaminated with tons of sheep sorrel seeds & roots. 😕

Like you, I aspire to no-till our family's annual garden, but find that dogmatism is rarely useful. In our context here in Manitoba, I've found that unless I decisively get out ahead of the quack-grass and Canada thistle, no-tilling can be a recipe for frustration. I've found that quack-grass can punch through even a phone-book's thickness of newspaper or cardboard, and actually LOVES the cooler environment provided by these mulch super-highways. (so I think even IF you had laid down these mulches initially you might not have been clear-sailing(?)) The quack, in particular, is not only rampant but also allelopathic and can greatly reduce the ability of plants near it to thrive. As a result, my CURRENT practice is to gradually move to no-till over a three-year period as I advance my garden gradually into the hay field. This three-year process involves tilling, cover-cropping, and spot-weeding until I am relatively confident that I am ahead of the Canada thistle and quack-grass. I use my current garlic patch to delineate the line between my no-till area and the area where I still till, AND I tend to till the perimeter, since keeping up with edging is impractical in my context. I MIGHT try weed-barrier on the perimeter in lieu of tillage eventually, but weed barrier is also an imperfect solution. Mulch is tremendously useful, however this far north, I've found I typically need to pull mulch back in spring or my soil doesn't warm up enough for tomatoes and peppers. (In addition to aligning decisions with values, aligning them with observations about what works/doesn't work has served me better than dogmatic adherence to any particular practice! :) ) A final word about no-tilling in my situation: I've found it really helps to know which 'weeds' I can partner with in the garden, and which ones I'm committed to excluding. Quack & Canada thistle are not welcome, BUT I leave portulaca, dandelion, plantain, and black medic in most places (except in the carrots & beets). I've found these plants don't interfere with my goals in the garden, and may even help occupy spaces that would otherwise be colonized by something less 'friendly'. Great channel, by the way. I found you about a month ago and have referenced you as a good resource with my local Permaculture group.

I love your greenhouse, it looks amazing. I'm in southern Wisconsin so zone 5a/5b. I probably shouldn't have but last weekend we planted, flowers, a couple cantaloupe, 6 watermelon and 4 tomatoes. I'm excited to plant before my surgery on may 17th. I still want to get more tomatoes and lots of peppers. I tried starting my own plants but I started them too late. I like how you are using Holistic Management to make the decisions you are making. I have struggled a bit with its' application but this is proof to me that it does work. Don't feel bad about tilling - some science states that tilling actually does not entirely destroy the microbiome. But rather, It simply sets it back a bit and will rejuvenate in a couple days as long as there is a good organic level in the soil. Cobbler looked great. I did smile at you taking less ice cream though...lol. Not me! I love my ice cream.

I can see the benefit of doing no-dig gardening in some locations, especially those that have been under tillage for many years and don’t have a huge weed problem, ie invasive, intractable weeds. I have felt the pressure from the homestead community to go that route, but like you, it isn’t a priority for me. One day I happened to think of this scripture in the book of Genesis and felt somewhat vindicated. Genesis 2:4-5 “ These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. And every plant of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.” I guess God wanted man to till the ground!

Exactly....when your dealing with rough land, basically a good size field with all kinds of grasses and weeds, no-till is just too much input in the beginning, but can be an option once the weed situation in thoroughly under control. But even if it doesn't end up being a no-till, it's not the end of world, so let's not forget that! We've always tilled our garden beds and we've always had excellent growing conditions and successful harvests. I have a fleet of raised beds now, just to make things easier on the back, and it's super easy to keep those weed free.
