"The Jungle Book", "Pete's Dragon" and "Cinderella" are the best of the live action remakes, in my opinion, since at least they actually tried to add other competents, not just limiting themselves to a tried and true story.

Oh for sure, The scene where Maleficent wakes up to find that Stefan cut off her wings after opening up to him in a profoundly disturbing metaphor for sexual assault and Maleficent's feelings of shock, pain, and despair, before culminating into a white-hot rage is such a powerful and raw scene that I have to give Disney some respect because I respect how ballsy that decision to include that was.

I feel like most issues I have with the remakes such as The Lion King, Pinocchio and Beauty and The Beast is that they would rather be shot by shot remake, not adding anything new or updating some aged aspects of the story. Rinse and repeat can get boring after a while. (Mulan (2020) is a crime against cinema that I’m not even gonna touch ever again because of all the messed up shit behind the scenes.) Meanwhile, the remakes such as Cinderella, Cruella, Aladdin, and Maleficent are able to be good movies on their own because they are able to differentiate themselves from the originals with new and creative elements. Hell, they would even improve issues such as Cinderella (2015) giving Prince Charming a personality and Aladdin (2019) introducing Daliah as Jasmine’s confidant so that Jasmine can have someone she could confide to with things she couldn’t explain to her father. At this point, I think that people’s main issue with the remakes is the over-saturation. I really hope that future remakes such The Little Mermaid remake will be in the same quality and care as the remakes I genuinely like.

Granted I do get the hate against “Cinderella” (2015)…everyone except the title character had a personality and satisfying arc. This remake and “Mulan” (2020) both had really bland boring female leads. For me it’s really hard to like a movie if I dislike the main character.

Yeah, a lot of the remakes are cash grabs so I can’t say I’m shocked why they’re widely hated. When there is actual effort put into them and an apparent appreciation for the source material like with 2015 Cinderella, the translation of the story through mediums can birth beautiful visual storytelling.

I heard the live action little mermaid will have new songs and ariel's sisters will have powers. There will be other new elements to the story so it won't be a shot by shot of the cartoon version. I can't wait for it.🥰

@@deyvn3182 I’m also looking forward to it! I think it’s a good idea to expand on Ariel’s sisters and other characters who weren’t developed much in the original. Also, I don’t think it is a bad idea to give Ariel’s sisters (and maybe Ariel herself) some powers. In my opinion it didn’t really make sense that their father has some powers but not his children.

As an animator it’s a little disrespectful because the reason Disney is doing them is because live action is seen as better and is more profitable. often times the effects don’t work as well. Example being the dishes in beauty and the beast. The lion king just pisses me off though because it’s just a worse animated version of the original. As a joke I started making 2d remake stills of live action movies. I don’t have a problem with a couple of them. But they doing one for every film at this point. To make a definitive version of them, and often rewriting parts of the original that made it special.

I have mixed opinions on this. On one hand, yes, I agree that it's ridiculous to hate on the live-action remakes, spin-offs, and follow-ups because "OMG it's nothing like the original!" Yes, the trend is getting old, but at the end of the day, the trend is making Disney money and that's what they care about most. As for complaints about the casting, I can understand the complaints about the singing, but the complaints about race are DUMB! Mermaids and fairies are fictional creatures. Ariel can be black and so can the Blue Fairy and Tinkerbell! As for the upcoming Snow White remake, yes, the original fairy tale is about a German girl with white skin, black hair, and red lips. However, there are THREE Puerto Rican adaptations of the original fairy tale, one of which (Blanca Flor) doesn't mention the specific appearance of the Snow White character; just that whenever the queen (who in this version was her mother) asked the question "who is the most beautiful woman in the world", the mirror would say it was her daughter. Disney chose Rachel Zegler to play the lead role because of her voice so literally all the team has to do is take inspiration from other adaptations of the story. On the other hand, I can't ignore the obvious issues with the live-action remakes, spin-offs, and follow-ups. This isn't because of personal bias but because of other reasons. As for the issues themselves: -Alice in Wonderland (2010) was confusing plot-wise, but overall, it served its purpose as a follow-up to the original -Maleficent had a lot of plot changes I took issue with, but despite that, the idea of making a villain sympathetic worked because Maleficent -The Jungle Book 2016 was a good adaptation, but as a former music major, I can't ignore the singing issues some of the actors have. -Beauty and the Beast 2017's plot changes don't make sense to me as they remove the charm the original had (the scene between Belle and her father), defeat the purpose (having the servants literally explain the plot to Belle), or are barely there at all to accomplish what they were put in the movie for (Making LeFou gay was a prime example of queer-baiting). The new songs were nice, but most of the singing (especially Emma Watson's) was atrocious to the point where the autotune was obvious. I can't defend this movie at ALL and I always tell people if they want a good live-action Beauty and the Beast adaptation to just go see the Broadway musical version (which got Toni Braxton to play Belle in 1998 and the composers wrote a special song for her to do called "A Change in Me"). -Dumbo 2019 would have been better if they'd just axed the problematic stuff and stuck closer to the original plot. -Aladdin 2019 was better than Beauty and the Beast, but they made too many unnecessary plot changes; the singing wasn't as bad as Beauty and the Beast, but it could have used some work. -The Lion King 2019 had the opposite problem to Dumbo and Aladdin; it stuck too close to the plot and would have benefited from borrowing some of the plot points from the stage musical (ex: Scar going insane); half the singing was good and half the singing was bad; it's a shame Beyonce didn't get to sing "Shadowland" from the Broadway musical because that was Nala's big moment. -Mulan 2020 is THE worst out of the live-action remakes; not only did it lack the charm of the original and defeat the purpose of things, but it was a gigantic mess; it was produced almost entirely by non-Asian people (which resulted in plot elements being westernized; if they wanted to make it truer to the original tale, they should have hired more Chinese people), the removal of Shang was insulting, the lead actress should have faced bigger repercussions for her statements being out of line, and they had no excuse to film the movie in Xinjiang (an internment camp where human rights abuses took place). -Pinocchio 2022 handled the casting and new characters well; however, changing old plot elements defeated the purpose of the story; Pinocchio's nose growing was supposed to be a lesson to children that lying is bad and having him use it to escape Stromboli ruins the message; him getting kicked out of school by an evil headmaster and cruel children instead of skipping it also ruins the moral that you shouldn't skip school; Pleasure Island was supposed to be this magical place the boys were tricked to go to, engaged in bad behavior, and were cursed to become donkeys as part of the coachman's scheme to sell them so having Pinocchio be kidnapped to go to that place doesn't work either; this could have been fixed by having Pinocchio still skip school, removing the "broken Aesop" of lying getting Pinocchio out of trouble, and having the children be turned into donkeys because they engaged in other naughty/unhealthy behaviors (skipping school, vandalizing, gambling, consuming too much sugar, disrespecting their elders, etc.) The only ones I don't have any issues with are the 1994 Jungle Book remake (which as boring as it was to me as a kid, was its own thing), the 1996 101 Dalmatians Remake (which despite getting bad reviews was hilarious), the 2015 Cinderella remake (which despite following plot of the film it was based on, had its own original twists), Christopher Robin (which served as a good follow up to Winnie the Pooh and got Jim Cummings back as Pooh and Tigger), and Lady and the Tramp 2019 (What a Shame fixes the main issue with the film, that being the racist connotations of the We Are Siamese song; changing the type of cats and the style of the song worked much better). With that being said, the live action remakes in general are not my thing, but if someone else wants to see them, I don't rag on them for it. Yes, I get tired of seeing remake after remake announced, but if someone else enjoys it, then that's fine.

I thought that if Disney made a movie with gay main characters it would be a trending topic at least. I actually saw a trailer of Strange World a while ago, but I forgot about it. I didn't realize there was any gay character in the movie, which isn't really a bad thing because we shouldn't make a big deal about it anyway. They didn't promote that movie at all though.😐

I prefer the in-depth reviews that actually take the the time to analyze the movie rather than giving surface level complaints. But unfortunately, most people on the Internet are not doing anything substantial with their criticisms of these Disney live action remakes. For every legitimate criticism, there’s 1 million more invalid criticisms. And you are absolutely right that even if there’s problems with the stories there are things we can appreciate such as the visuals, i.e. the costumes the art direction. I can appreciate the lion king remake for how they were able to create a photo realistic version of the original. I’ve seen some documentaries about the making of that movie and the artistry and how they did it is just phenomenal.

True, with the internet everyone on can be a movie critic, by just making jokes and talking about the most surface level things. Some of the remakes are pretty good (and Maleficent and Cruella shouldn't even be counted as remakes, they're alternate universes that deliberately contradict the source material to do their own thing!), it's just that the bad ones like TLK and Dumbo overshadow them. The Jungle Book was *much* better than it gets credit for, and people should give it a chance.

One thing abt me I love live action remakes however you will never see me jumping for joy over a new Cinderella movie EVER like of all the Disney princesses they choose Cinderella over and over like damn you have been beating that horse FOR YEARS. The only Cinderella movies I enjoy (talking abt remakes only) is the one with Lucy Hale, Selena Gomez, Hillary Duff, Brandy and Sofia Carson’s one was okay in comparison to the other ones but I still watch it from time to time. I also like the Cinderella remake they made back in like 2015 which was in the traditional style of Cinderella and technically so was Brandy’s version as well. I also would say Rags cus technically it was just a reverse gender Cinderella but Rags is in a whole other league than the other ones tbh and the Brandy one too. I just think the Cinderella remakes are purely about money which is why I hate when a new one is released. Anything else I really love tho.

Plus, Anita is black in Cruella 2021 unlike Anita in the 1961 film. If that is not proof these movies are not that connected I do not know what to tell you. Though it is weird that young Jasper was played by a brown skinned kid whereas the adult Jasper was a white guy. Edit: I think a big reason why some hate the remakes is because it feels like a betrayal to animation fans. Like, there was a cartoon on the Disney Channel UK branch titled 101 Dalmatian Street. It follows the current generation of puppies and has a fantastic version of Cruella reminiscent of the original 1961 movie. But the show had only one season and had abysmal viewership numbers. It was sent to Disney XD to die. I think Disney is having trouble connecting to people these days. The movie Strange World has lousy marketing compared to the outrage at the Little Mermaid. But that is a whole other discussion.

By comparing with the two animated jungle book films made by Disney, there are three live action Jungle Book films (soon to become four with the addition of the 2016 reboot’s sequel within the next three to four years!) made by the same company.

Tbh the only remake that really pissed me off was the Maleficent movie. She looked great, loved her acting, but the overall movie, the story wasn't anything like what I was hoping for.😒 Though I apreciate the creativity. Oh and I thought Belle's yellow dress in the remake was really ugly, but that's about it.😏 Remakes I did like were Alice in Wonderland, 101 Dalmatians, Cinderella and Cruella. Most of the others were too obvious remakes imo and felt pointless to me. I have high standards Ig😂 I'm actually looking forward to see the little mermaid remake, because remake or not we haven't really seen a liveaction little mermaid yet.😊

Now there are some decent live action movies I enjoyed Lady and the Tramp, Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians, Maleficient, Cinderella to name a few. Honestly it’s hard to not make a good Cinderella film(and yet Amazon managed to do exactly) But I would say what made these good is that they changed certain plot lines (For Movies like Maleficient, just the entire story), and elements that make it feel fresh. That’s why, again, Cinderella can have a bunch of retellings, but depending on the style it can feel brand new each time Sadly I know Disney is making more live actions just so they can not waste money on coming up with new material and exploit cgi artists. Not only do the visual styles like in Beauty and the Beast fall flat, the exploitation of cgi is apparent. Really hope cgi crew form a union soon. Then you have the writing of these stories, and if it’s something like Lion King, then it’s nothing but a copy paste. Just worst because now you don’t have any expressive cartoon animals that match the energy. What sucks even more is that the lead cgi artists of the live action lion king actually had expressive material for these characters, Disney just said no. So I’m hoping they do Little Mermaid well, it’s just with Disney they kinda have a 50/50 chance with this

I actually loved Alice in wonderland, and Cinderella. I REALLY wanted a princess and the frog remake. So much! To see a girl with 4c hair on the screen, and bring up systematic r@cism such as the beginning of the animation of princess frog, then seeing adventure in the bayou! THAT and the new Pokémon game, it was my favorite yet!

Ngl, the fashion in Cruella was, ok. Meaning I’d totally wear it, but it’s not something that screamed “Cruella” which makes me indifferent. And we shouldn’t be feeling indifferent when it comes to a character’s design like Cruella If she really wanted to be edgy or punk about this, I would have appreciated if they showed that style evolve into her obsession with fur coats. A rags to riches story would have been awesome to see

Live-action Disney remakes r hit or miss overall, the 2 best r definitely Jungle Book and Aladdin, in fact it was Jungle Book that finally won me over with this trend. Lion King remake was a mixed bag because it stuck to the core narrative beat for beat and line for line. That said, I do like how they made some changes that improved on the original. Scar's manipulative tactics were better especially when it came to luring Simba to the gorge, the drought at Pride Rock under Scar's rule was given a clearer and more detailed explanation, Nala's escape from Pride Rock was actually shown, Sarabi actually confronted Scar about his blatant lies during the final battle, I like how the hyenas were a lot more threatening this time, and the way they reframed them thinking Simba was dead. In the original they saw him running away and they assumed he would die anyway but in the remake, they thought he fell and died, and ran off, not knowing Simba just hid himself really well.

Not Disney related, but this is on brand yo what you were talking about. Catwoman (2004) is not perfect, I'm aware of that, and there's some technical issues that I don't understand because I'm not in film production, but I liked the story, I loved Halle's performance, and I loved her costume. I don't care, that movie won an Oscar in my house. But people on the internet (mostly men) like to make it known that it's "trash" or whatever, and I'm like "and what now?" I'm still gonna watch it, and I even bought the junior novel to go with it. Like yes, let me like trash

Tbh some are REALLY bad (Mulan 2020 pretty much stripped everything that made Mulan good) but some get too much hate. I think that people should give them a chance before judging I have plenty of problems with Aladdin but I'd be lying if I said I didn't like a lot of parts for the Live Action. Putting the glaring problems with the portrayal of Arabs aside (ik the term but I CANNOT for the life of me spell it, I apologize) Maleficent was genuinely really good imo. I don't get the hate. She looked wonderful, the visuals were wonderful, her character was pretty good, and I think it was an interesting twist on sleeping beauty. With Maleficent being the one to save Aurora instead of some guy who she barely knew Most of the other ones I watched I didn't really care for, however I do have hope for The Little Mermaid. Halle's voice is beautiful and I'm really interested to see how they expand Ariel's character All in all, while I don't like most of them, I think if you view them as their own things or different takes on the story, they're not AS bad as people make them out to be (and some are even good)

At least there's someone other than Dave Lee from Down Under or this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnjKdWeshM51p5I Because this definitely an attitude that I wish should stop since even if it's their opinions, it's only alienating people to point where they are driving away people from both ends. Like because of the negativity and constant back and forth, it just makes people not want to watch the originals or new ones anymore because of the annoying arguments. 13:58- 23:13 Though I blame that problem not only on what was thought to be acceptable at the time the older films are made, but also due to selective bias from the higher-ups. Not to mention that when looking it at face value(Without seeing the movie) would make it feel like pandering to SJWs. But that's more the fault of how current society still looks down on others that are seen as inferior, due to being accepted without question. That and they feel the delivery of it feels forced, like we're being made to accept these political issues in modern entertainment. Which I can't blame them due to a certain president who already had shady history and known to be a terrible person even before he became president having a major influence on turning everybody by turning everyone into enemies. And due to paranoia over the influence of his power over the American public, is probably why they want to add these in because they don't want other people (Like their friends and family) to become like him and his enablers.

Those who complain about these movies don't watch them but see the surface of it. People just don't want to enjoy themselves these days and hate on things for the sake of it, and take that hatred way too far. How many people have been harassed and threatened online for THE COMPANY'S DECISIONS. Halle Berry being the most recent but no one brought it up unless to talk about how she "deserved it" for "agreeing to the role"
disney villains are bad, for the wrong reasons.
