• I do like both Anna and Elsa because of their relationship as sisters and their personalities. •I like Elsa’s storyline of her suffering from mental health issues like anxiety/depression/PTSD based on the depiction of unable to control her ice powers in the first movie. *But I feel that some people only focus on Elsa’s mental health issues and her storyline and they don’t acknowledge Anna’s storyline and mental health issues throughout Frozen franchise*. •Both of Anna and Elsa deserved so much better from their parents.

YES! i wish people would focus on anna a little bit more, i feel like shes completely overlooked for her sister.. which is ironic because it seems to me like anna is dealing with isolation and abandonment problems. That's why she wanted to marry hans as soon as she met him, she was desperate and lonely because she, unlike elsa, didnt wanna be alone. Anna's story speaks to me about how more vulnerable are tossed around and taken up by manipulators who say they'll love them and take care of them when really they have alterior motives But i guess marketing spoke and disney shoved her plotline to the side and just gave her a man

I hate the fact it was milked out for everything good it had, to the point people just started to point out the bads. I love how Elsa & Anna were as different victims of PTSD & neglect. Elsa was the one who was seen as the “evil problem child” and had grew up to hate herself because of it. Anna was the one who was the “safe one” but was casted to the side. I am both Anna & Elsa, so say my opinion of the movie is biased, but I love it so much and it will always hold a forever special place in my heart. I also love how Hans was a twist villain, but I do like to believe in a theory that the Troll’s were the evil ones all along, but that’s just my personal opinion & the theory.

I liked Hans as a villain because he was basically a parody of the Prince Charming archetype. I think people exaggerate how many twist villains modern Disney movies have (and they’ve had them since Stromboli in Pinocchio) There’s just Turbo, Hans, Yokai, Bellwether, and on the Pixar side of things, Ernesto de la Cruz. I like Turbo, Hans, and Ernesto, but not Bellwether, and Yokai was just forgettable
@SecretIdentityStudio

I wouldn't even count Turbo as a twist villain. He's as much of a twist villain as Scar. You can tell he's evil from the moment you see him, it's just that the characters don't initially catch on (aside from Vanellope, who he enacts policies regularly and specifically targeting). The twist about him is *who* he is, but we know he's the villain long before that.

for me it's frustrating when people complain about the Hans twist because 1. it wasn't overdone at the time frozen came out! i understand following disney movies made audiences sick of it, but it was not unoriginal at the time. i think we absolutely need to take that order of events seriously to keep animation commentary fair and logical. so many people fail to do that and review every movie retrospective as if it's the studios newest hit. i don't understand that 2. I kind of consider the surprise and lack of hinting (beyond his impulsive feelings) to be a strength. it makes a great metaphor for love bombing and that's something really relevant for modern relationships! we often don't see a new partner chuckling and plotting and looking around evilly. this movie made rushing into things the red flag in itself, as it would be in real life. and it was nuanced in showing that some people rush in because they're vulnerable (anna) and others rush in because they're predatory (hans) and you can't tell which is which, so you have to slow down! i liked how they played on older disney tropes to let you guard down. i honestly thought it was one of the better and more meaningful twist villains
@asomebody5490
@asomebody5490 Жыл бұрын
The twist would've worked so well if it just had the proper setup. Maybe some subtle hints by facial expression or suspicious dialogue? Nothing too major, just just enough to get the audience thinking like, "ayo what?"
@KitKat_293
@KitKat_293 Жыл бұрын
@@asomebody5490 my entire opinion tho is that the lack of hints is a strength in this case. as a metaphor for predatory relationships where there may be no hints. the impact and takeaway is that you just have to be prepared and resist the urge to jump in too fast. because it's a real gamble. in other movies no it won't always be effective to blindside a twist reveal that way, but with movie in particular it was exciting and satisfying to me as the viewer to be taken for the ride like that and not see it coming. and meaningful to reflect on because that's how many relationships turn. maybe the hinting would have more satisfying to you as a viewer but for this movie i'll just have to agree to disagree

@KitKat_293 Жыл бұрын
@@antonioalford4403 in most movies? yes, a set up is needed for a good twist villain. however my thesis here is that hans in frozen works best as a total blindside, simply because it felt like a clear and impactful metaphor and warning about how predatory people may love bomb and rush a relationship, and you may truly not see the signs. there might be no reliable foolproof cheat sheet guide to identifying a creep in the early stages of a relationship. there's no clear signs of it with hans either, except for his love bombing. but anna was doing that too. anna had good intentions and hans had bad ones, and they didn't seem any different at first. because you truly can't tell if an overly enthusiastic affectionate person is coming from a good place or not! so the lesson it gave me is that rushing in is legitimately dangerous. one of the worst things you can do. trusting slowly and steadily is all you can do. not putting up impenetrable walls like elsa or having none at all like anna. while still being sympathetic that a very lonely traumatized person (like anna) will be tempted to rush into the feeling of acceptance and love. and still trying to urge such people to slow down.
@KitKat_293
@KitKat_293 Жыл бұрын
@@antonioalford4403 but the narrative didn't stop making sense because a chameleon type person showed his true colors once he thought anna and else were dead or was ready to execute them. the only part that didn't make sense was (like you said), the way he revealed it to anna before he needed to, he could have just left her there to die with no explanation and the only motive he has was to gloat, which isn't the best and falls into telling instead of showing writing that can feel cheap. but the fact that the audience was forced to be surprised by his heel turn is not inherently bad writing. it had a clear purpose and effect to kill audiences illusions that "i could never fall for a bad or abusive person, i know all the bad signs and I would know better" when many such people are very deceptive and aware of red flags they should hide to build trust and be the perfect partner until you're in deep. the audience only knowing as much as the characters about hans is to put us in anna's shoes and break that false sense of security that "it would never happen to me". because in real relationships you're not the omnipresent audience who can see everything and anything. the audience only seeing as much of hans as he would like you to see is an intentional choice to simulate what dating such a man would be like. i don't know if it was intended that way, but regardless it absolutely works for me artistically and narratively. breaking the normal rules of storytelling with purpose can have a powerful emotional effect on the audience and can be a very good thing when you want them to feel vulnerability with the characters. but if there's no meaning or purpose why you're trying to envoke feelings of vulnerability in the audience (in this case to connect themselves with the main characters mistakes), yes without a purpose it can feel cheap instead. it didn't feel that way to me because it all seemed like part of the vision, not laziness

i feel like frozen got unfairly judged because everyone was sick of hearing let it go and decided to use their grudge with the song against the entire movie. looking back now that i'm older i can admit its not their best (that spot is still taken by hunchback) but its definitely not as bad as people make it out to be. sure, the writing of hans and the trolls is subpar, but the music and visuals make up for some of it. i think the reason why i absolutely adored elsa so much as a kid and honestly still do is because of the complex way she's written (or at least there was an attempt). on the surface level, elsa haters may see her irrational choices as being stupid, but they very much make sense for an eldest sister who grew up being taught to be afraid of herself before losing her parents early. i think from a psychological lens elsa is really interesting, its just that disney's writers would probably never have enough care to fully explore her character in that way.

I feel like the weird kinks and quirks 2010 disney had are entirely because of shrek and the trend of quirky weird 3D movies it started. That and princess and the frog bombed hard.. so they started doing new shit and trying to avoid old tropes like the plague such as true love or getting married immediately upon meeting something or leaving everything behind for a man which people were criticising disney for alot back then (even though if you really look at the evidence it's just..no) because the market was changing disney started making movies with twist villains and elaborate stories and stuff and the way frozen turned out is very reminiscent of them trying to avoid the things they we're often wrongly criticised for like the plague lol. Also the reason why they stopped doing 2D i think too

I think it's because of the overmerchandising since the movie ranked billions at the box office, being the first animated Disney movie to do so. So it might make economic sense why people hate it because it has more merch than any other animated Disney movie at the time.

I only despise Elsa and Anna's parents PS The sequel didn't make them look better,it made them worse. You're not a good parent just because you can tell a good bedtime story and sing a lullaby. You know who else did that? David and Louise Turpin,Dee Dee Blanchard, Diane Downs and Mary Ann Cotton.

I haven’t watched the movie in a while. I have to watch again but I think it’s one of my favorite Disney movies (besides Pixar) but then again I also love Wreck it Ralph (not the sequel 😭), Zootopia, Big Hero Six, Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Etc. So maybe I’m just a little weird. Nevertheless, I think if any movie is close to Frozen’s “sister bond is the real true love” it would be Brave because Merida was prince-less and her lesson was to cherish her mom and if I’m not mistaken Vice versa. But I do feel the movie has pros and cons, it’s just not as bad as people make it out to be. I love the music in it and had to perform it and yet never listened to it enough to get tired of it, whereas others might’ve overwatched and over listened to it. People are also able to point out details in movies like Encanto by using context clues/reading between the lines (ex. In we don’t talk about Bruno, Camilo says 7- foot frame, and since Bruno is short, audiences realized that Bruno seemed tall to Camillo because Camillo last saw him when he was 5), but the lyrics in frozen are sometimes too obvious but people don’t understand them (like Elsa having a breakdown about not being able to save the kingdom from not knowing how but I’ve seen people saying she didn’t care about her people. She left to protect them from herself and said so herself. That’s kind of what let it go and first time and forever reprise is about). I do think that other movies like The Emperors New Groove, A goofy Movie, etc. Are also my favs but aren’t given a chance, but most people who I’ve seen complain about Frozen didn’t care about those movies, they mentioned a few movies and sometimes only one, which is Tangled, which is also mostly white. I do really like tangled but it also has issues, such as Aladdin being antagonized by many for stealing apples and bread to survive and lying, but Eugene being praised for stealing crowns, which you don’t need to survive, and breaking into towers from being chased. Nevertheless, Tangled is awesome but they’re still somewhat similar. But a lot of Disney movies especially classics are overrated but people still love them bc they’re nostalgic or magical to them. Frozen is kind of that way to me. Like I love the lion king. Might be overrated to some but I still love it. Maybe it’s rated. It deserves hype but got a little too much. I could go on about Disney forever I must be stopped! Anyway, I love this channel it’s thought provoking lol!

I was in high school when frozen came out and I HATED the hype it was getting. I was avoiding it because I wanted to watch it after the hype died down so I wouldn't be disappointed by it being mid (which it was) but my science teacher decided she didn't want to teach one day so she put it on and when Hanse showed up I shouted "HE'S THE VILLAIN!" which pissed my teacher and classmates off cause I admitted I hadn't seen it yet. Petty and immature? Sure. Do I regret it? Not really

I never really hated Frozen per se, but I did get tired of the hype. I understood why it was such a beloved film though because the music was pretty catchy, Idina Menzel is amazing in anything (I'm a huge Wicked fangirl, though Kristin Chenoweth is my favorite of the two original leads in that show), and it was nice to see Disney poke fun at themselves again ("you can't marry a guy you just met" LOL!) However, overall, I enjoyed Enchanted more and think it's underrated compared to Frozen. Other than that, my only issue with Frozen was that they were introducing another white princess and her sister. I understand that there were a LOT of production issues with it due to it originally being conceived as "The Snow Queen", but there were other ways they could have gone to make it more original. I also took some issue with the fact that there were so many male characters in a story that was originally about girl power and Hans as a twist villain didn't do it for me. However, those were only minor issues. Overall I enjoyed Frozen and agree that it is overly hated, mostly due to Disney marketing the crap out of it. No, it's not my favorite Disney film; that honor goes to The Lion King in terms of Disney overall, in terms of Disney princess films, I much preferred Tangled (I know it has issues, but out of the princesses, Rapunzel is the one I like best), and in terms of overall music, I prefer the Broadway version of Beauty and the Beast. However, like you, I acknowledge the things it did right (Kristoff's "Reindeers are Better than People" song gave me a good laugh) and I had the same reaction as you when Hans got what he deserved (having Anna deliver the final blow instead of Kristoff like they originally planned was so rewarding!) Anyway, thank you for doing a video on this. It was very informative! :)

P.S. I fully agree that the things Frozen is praised for were already done in other Disney movies: -female friendship: Yes! Pocahontas may have been controversial, but it did that first. Lottie and Tiana also deserve a mention (despite Lottie not really being needed to progress the film; I adore Lottie, but Disney thinking they had to have nice white people just to sell the movie with the first black princess in it was dumb.) DCOMs and Disney Channel Original series (both animated and live action) all have good female friendships in them too. -Sisterhood: Fully agreed! Lilo and Stitch handled the concept of sisterhood MUCH better and it's an underrated GEM (partially due to Disney doing away with its 2D films) compared to Frozen. The director of Lilo and Stitch even pointed out "I like it, but we did it first" when asked about someone pointing that out. -A "movie where people turn their backs on a woman for being misunderstood": I agree that Hunchback of Notre Dame was a better example, especially since it featured a Romani woman and women of color tend to face more problems like that than white women. If you want to get technical, Tiana from The Princess and the Frog deals with persecution too and I'm pretty sure there are some protagonists from Disney Channel original series and DCOMs who deal with that too. -A "movie where a girl puts herself in danger to protect those that she loves and her village": Yes, Mulan did this first and Mulan also did the idea of a movie where the female character isn't seeking a prince (in Elsa's case) better too. -A "movie where the main character is a d**khead and learns to be a nicer person": Yep! The Emperor's New Groove also did that first and even though the film didn't get as much attention, Brother Bear technically did that too because Kenai wasn't exactly the nicest person to start out with first either. -A "movie where a woman is put in danger by a horrible man, he's bothering her, and she gets close to sacrificing herself": You are correct! Sister Act did that first and so did Hunchback of Notre Dame (Esmeralda was willing to choose the fire over Frollo after he finally caught her and who would blame her?) Also you didn't mention them, but here are a few other things Frozen gets praised for that it didn't do first: -Elsa being a female Disney character who doesn't wind up paired off with a man. Frozen wasn't the first to do that either! Even though Mulan had feelings for Shang, the movie left their relationship open-ended with her inviting Shang over for dinner (no, I don't count the sequel because that was awful) so that's another thing Mulan did first! Also as many mixed reviews as it got, Merida from Brave did that too, but she doesn't get as much attention as Elsa nowadays! -Elsa defying the "evil queen" trope: They weren't the main characters, but if you want to get technical, movies like Sleeping Beauty (Aurora's mother), The Lion King (Sarabi), Tangled (Rapunzel's mom), and Brave (Merida's mom) did that first too as their female maternal figures were all NICE characters too! -Elsa being a good representation for the LGBT community: Again, Mulan did this first too, if you want to get technical. Also she's from an acquired property, but Irma in WITCH is a confirmed lesbian. -Elsa's powers being a positive representation for mental illness: Inside Out may be the one Disney film a lot of critics cite as the best handling of positive representation of mental illness (especially considering they previously did so in a negative light), but if you want to get technical, Up did it before both Inside Out and Frozen! Up's main plot may be about Carl (the main old man character) going on an adventure, but a lot of the film also focuses on Carl learning to cope with losing Ellie. This serves as both a realistic depiction of grief and a realistic depiction of depression. -Frozen being the "highest grossing animated film" made by Disney: As of 2022, the Lion King's remake (as subpar as it was) has it beat. Also speaking of The Lion King, before Frozen came along, it was the biggest Disney phenomenon I can think of and unlike Frozen's Broadway adaptation (which closed in 2020 due to the pandemic and never reopened), The Lion King's Broadway adaptation is still going! So yes, you are correct! Frozen may be praised for a lot of things, but it didn't do those things first!

i get why people don't like it because of the merchandising- seeing it everywhere was kind of unnecessary, even for people who loved the movie. the same goes for the diversity critiques, they're 100% right. however i feel like a lot of people think it's just an awful movie in general and i don't really get that. i went to art school and pretty much all of my classmates made fun of it at some point so i felt kind of embarrassed to talk about how much i loved it. i don't think it's a perfect movie or anything, but there's just something special about it to me. from the moment i first saw the teasers i knew it was exactly the kind of thing i was going to love and connect with and i wasn't wrong. there's something really endearing about each of the characters, and i think the songs, score, and art direction (for the most part) are absolutely gorgeous.

I mostly hated it in the beginning because I was so heartbroken about how Disney took my all-time favorite fairytale and changed it from the inside out. But now, I’m grateful for Frozen, because now the original Snow Queen means more to me than it did before. Absolutely not. Not one of my personal favorites but it’s a fine enough movie that got a hefty amount of ire from many thanks to it being everywhere and receiving accolade after accolade that a lot of people felt it didn’t deserve. I personally vibed with stuff like Wreck-It Ralph and Big Hero 6 way more.

I actually think the hate for frozen started immediately. Even when the first concept art of Anna released there were fan edits putting her aside Rapunzel and being like "seriously Disney!?" And look, theyre still doing the same faces for characters. Look at Raya and the upcoming Elemental. I still havent watched this movie since i bought it almost a decade ago. I actually dont hate it but i really dont care anymore. Ppl havent talked about it much at all and i think bc its more vague and widely appealing than actually good, its going to be buried by movies like Encanto and Moana that are the inverse, especially if they are released in the same era. Id truly be fascinated to see if we even talk about it that much 20 years from now. That being said i feel like the crticisms of how white frozen was may be the only reason we got culturally diverse disney films after it in the first place as a response. 🤷‍♀️

Frozen suffered from what I call The Phantom Menace effect. Its when a movie is loved at first, but over time you see the problems with it and begin to hate it. And yes, the movie has problems, which sadly effects the company today. Maybe if they just stuck with the Snow Queen Story it could have been better. BTW the Duke of Weaslton should have been the main villain. Or at least have the twist be that Hans was working with the Duke the whole time. They should have kept Elsa as the main villain. Also, evil Elsa with black hair is sexier good Elsa. I can tolerate Olof, but not the trolls. They had the worst song. Sorry that you don't like Disney sidekicks. I tend to love, like, and tolerate them. Yes, even those god damn gargoyles.

I don't hate Frozen, I more or less fell out of love with it because I don't like the story as much as I would like to and I don't really like Elsa or Anna in the movie. And then Frozen 2 happened where some of the scenes and stuff in there just made me irrationally irritated and angry because it looks beautiful but the story was not great...they could've done more and it would've been amazing. So now, the only sister Disney movie I like is Lilo and Stitch.

I watched this movie loved it then I saw Lego Movie and then I realized oh I actually don't like Frozen. Frozen to me felt like being selfaware in the wrong era of Disney when the 2010s started to change felt like them wanting to be Dreamworks but really not needing to and its funny cause it feels like discount great value brand Enchanted. The sequel is oof 😬 removing the rushed development for merchandising Im shocked how Trolls World Tour had the same message and Poppy did more to change culture in their kingdom about their awful crimes to others than Anna and Elsa addressing what their grandpa did in the past.
