Hey Luke! Personally, the easiest way to catch a barramundi is using a 4/0 octopus beak hook with a live herring or mullet, bigger the better - don't be too afraid to throw a 15 or 20cm mullet on your hook, only 60 or 70cm barramundi have been known to even eat 25cm mullet. Hooking your live baits through the lip and nose will help them hold better and stay alive better. Fish between the tides, preferably from low to high and cast near mangroves or structure with shade. Follow these and I'm sure you'll have your first barra in no time! Also with your drag, if your line is near structure, you're not holding your rod and your drag is undone like you showed in the video, then you are almost guaranteed to lose a legal sized barra. Put your drag around where you can pull a tiny tiny bit out using just one hand without wrapping. Cheers.

Hey mate, I only just came across your videos and I love them. You actually show the reality of fishing and that's great.. I'm up in the NT and the what I've found works for me is fishing the change in tide from low to high. Also keep in mind that wherever you catch live bait barra will be because that's what they are after as well. Fishing the mouth of a creek should also provide the goods. I run a 6/0 octopus circle hook and it works well for me. Barra have a big mouth and should have no dramas at all gulping it down for you. Let me know if your ever in darwin. Love the videos bro, keep it up👍🤞

Hey Luke, my tips to catch some Barra and jacks are to fish close to the bank where there are lots of mangroves and structure (sunken trees, logs etc) and cast infront of those structure on one hour before or after the high tide and you should have some tight lines!

Hey luke great video, I was touched very deeply by this video and it really taught me to value persistance. You have shown me that at the end of a dark tunnel there is always light, I also am on a similar quest and have donuted 5 times already, the day it does come will feel sweeter than ever. I think personally the hooks you were using may be a bit small, for the estuarine systems there tend to be smaller models so it is important to utilise smaller hooks to get a more natural bait presentation, as the fish in those small systems tend to be more skittish. Great Idea with using the cast net sinkers, you really do make the best out of a good situation. Love the video, keep em coming. ❤.

Hey Luke mate, I love the videos and just wanted to tell ya, that creek you were fishing in (with the flood gates), is called Hills Creek. It is quite possibly one of the best barra spots ive fished around the estuary. My father and i caught a 120cm barra on the other side of those flood gates. The trick we found was to spend the day catching large mullet (as big as possible but keep all the mullet you get) in the cast net, then spend the night standing up on the road on top of the flood gates, and fish the other side to what you fished. We hook the mullet through the back (like you did but a little deeper so they stay on better), and use larger hooks (specifically "Circle Hooks") because they are far better for hooking barra, since they are self setting. Good luck mate.

Hey Luke, you seem to have mastered step 1 to catch a barra, which is getting live bait. Bait your mullet or herring through the nose. I think you are hooking the live bait close to the edge of the bait and it's just breaking off. I'd go back to that little hole where you got some decent bites. Try a lure as well while you have a couple of live bait out. You are sooo close! Well done.

Hey mate keep trying you will get there. Barra wont swallow a livey straight away, they will mouth it for awhile and spit it if they feel resistance. Keep your drag loose and strike 5 or 6 seconds after the line starts to run. Best way is to use a bait runner or overhead reel that you can disengage and then engage instantly for the strike. Shimano Calcuttas are good for this 👍

Hey mate, I am an avid follower of yours and would love to tee up a session one day! I fish with a running sinker - around 1.2-1.5m of leader, I use a 5/0 to 7/0 wide gap hook depending on the size of the mullet I'm using. Creek mouths on a run out tide is always good - especially if there is a decent hole in the mouth. You want to fish around eddy's in the current. Slow water behind a bend, or a rock will hold barra if there is some depth

That causeway is your spot for bait and big fish same as the trawlers they’ll hold jacks underneath, your running the wrong rig for current mate learn the patternosta rig, your hooks to big again also learn how to snell hooks , take your bait home with you and freeze individually and then you have bait/burly and a head start on the next trip , once again use the tide to wash baits underneath boats and jetties , I’m invested now lol if you want your first Barra go to the Tully river and banyan ck fish live prawn from the mountain creeks and you are guaranteed a Barra , it’s no good if the Tully is running dirty . Oh keep your rod in your hand at all times, a second rod with a floating surface bait … I can’t wait to see you get one … 🎉

Strong drag, big circle hook and they will hook themselves. You have to use circle hooks bro. And when hooking the bait go either side of the backbone

Tips don’t use weights when your during live bait and have the drag lose so is easy for it to run at the start and the tight it and rip it so it sets the hook and hook the live bait at the back of the fish where the tail cause they more of a chance cause the eat it from behind
