I remember my neighbour had one of these bubble cars back in the 60's and the day he bought it he parked it in his garage the trouble happened when he drove it in and couldn't open the door as he parked right up against the wall then he realised they had no reverse gear in them, so he was stuck in there for 4hrs until his wife got home.

One of my High School best friends was given a BMW Isetta that her father brought home from Germany where he was stationed in the Army. There was something that had to be brought up to California open road standards ( not sure what that was ?) Well it got cleared and licensing taken care of. So we went everywhere, mostly to Hoover High our last year, class of ‘61, and to the local Oscar’s Drive in to socialize, order French fries and Cokes. I loved that cute car and was amazed with the “front door” that had the steering wheel attached to it‼️This model also had a bench back seat and one side door...it zipped around pretty good...a great car during our Senior year❣️✋🌝Would love to ride in one today❣️Enjoying your videos restoring that little ‘55 cutie❣️😊👍😻

I am a NZ'er and in 1955 when I was 10 years old ,these little Isetta's came on the market, and as a kid they were my dream come true car! .I remember going on my bike to the small showroom where they were sold then going home and phoning them to find out the price. I didn't have any money and neither did my parents, it was just fantasy. The man told me 439 pounds, that's now $880 or $634 USA . Good luck with the car Sir and thanks for sharing and bringing me back a memory! cheers NZ

BMW Isetta 250 While it retained the "Bubble Window" styling, it differed from the Italian model in that its headlamps were fixed separately to the sides of the bodywork and it carried the BMW badge below the windscreen. The car was also redesigned to take a modified version of the 250 cc 4-stroke engine from the BMW R25/3 motorcycle and the front suspension was changed. The single-cylinder generated 12 hp at 5800 rpm. The crankcase and cylinder were made of cast iron, the cylinder head of aluminium. However, the head was rotated by 180 degrees compared with the motorcycle engine. The twin-bearing crankshaft was also different in the Isetta power unit, being larger and featuring reinforced bearings. One of the reasons for this was the heavy Dynastart unit which combined the dynamo and self-starter. The fuel mixture was provided by a Bing sliding throttle side draft motorcycle carburettor. In addition to further changes of detail, the BMW engineers enlarged the sump for installation in the car and cooled the engine by means of a radial fan and shrouded ducting. The power train from the four-speed gearbox to the two rear wheels was also unusual: fixed to the gearbox output drive was something called a Hardy disc, which was a cardan joint made of rubber. On the other side of it was a cardan shaft, and finally a second Hardy disc, which in turn was located at the entrance to a chain case. A duplex chain running in an oil bath led finally to a rigid shaft, at each end of which were the two rear wheels. Thanks to this elaborate power transfer, the engine-gearbox unit was both free of tension and well soundproofed in its linkage to the rear axle.

Love this channel. You and your dad have a real calm relaxed relationship. That comes across. Hi I g the videos a warm family feel to them. Along with the rust background of the workshop. It really sets the scene! The blue and white emblems on the BMW badge represent the small blue and white checkers on the Bavarian flag. I like you thought it had to do with the aeronautical heritage!!

In 1956 a Ham friend who was a catholic Brother drove me to our Field Day Radio location. I can tell you we drove on Palisades Interstate Pkwy up to Bear Mountain State Park. We traveled at speeds 55MPH to location. It was as I recalled very BUZZY at speed and very compact. Cute but way too small for me. I was 6ft 2in and chubby 13 year old.

Loved the video, watched it while broke down in my Peterbilt waiting for a repair truck. Thought I'd throw this out there. While your attempt at points repair was ingenious, if the spring steel strap you installed touch the motor it was grounding out your points. Just an idea. Would love to see the old girl on an up coming video. Also many may years ago I had a 63 Falcon Ranchero. Wish I still had it. Was an awesome car.

The first and only time I ever saw an Isetta on the road - it was parked in heat in Palm Springs, and there was a lady inside asking for our help. I was a teenager at the time. She kept cranking her engine over, and it wouldn't start. I couldn't see any doors. How did she get inside the thing? Then she opened the front and got out. She had bright pink hair! In the late 1950's! We couldn't do a thing. What a car!...why? Why? Why?

I knew a Butcher back in the 50's and 60's who had two of these and they loved them. Their Son. Frank Jaunke Jr. still owns them in St. Joseph, Mo. Then there was a Sargent Mickey Walker in the 1950's stationed at the Federal Prison in Leavenworth . Kansas owned one of these and a Crosley Station Wagon and drove both back and forth from St. Joseph, Missouri to the Prison all the time. I had a Crosley and loved it back when I was in the Army in 1955.

Once again pls. Christian tell your brother and to remove the aluminum round looking cover that is on the pariimeter of the points. Yes it will, cuz the you will see what is stopping you from mounting it. Even if it is to long you will how much to modify because you can see behind it. 25 yrs of experience against your thinking. "Always wondered" story about these. In the late 1960's - 70's down near the Marina Green area of San Francisco there was a storage lot (visible from the street) with dozens (literally DOZENS) of these just parked in rows and and rotting where they sat. They were obviously unused and had been unloaded at the port and brought there. Were they seized as unable to pass US safety laws? Legal dispute of some sort? Bankruptcy results? I moved away after a few years and never did know what became of them or how they came to be sitting there in the first place. Good automotive mystery.

Recently found your chanel I build, restore classic cars for last 20+ years (39 years exp) like what you do but sure you know this now BMW's logo is actualy the checkers from the Bavarian flag (not like I was told in school for the airplane's they built in WW2 for Germany and forced out of business by treaty signed at end of the war that Germany could no longer make military related viechle's,planes, tanks etc.. Like myth you can't leave a car battery on cement floor because it will drain the battery (was true when car battery s were made of a wood shell coated in tar the cement scraped tar etc.. causing dead battery s now they are plastic base so that doesn't happen but was told all the time by the older guys in shop because when they started that's how they were made and still said today.keep up the good work Tommy
