I play casually but was thinking about trying to do something a bit more formal. This gives me some good ground work in case I wanted to go that route. Thank you to you and your student for sharing.

And thankfully now there is the remote performance exams! No more aural and sight reading tests to do if you just want to do the pieces!

This is true. Not everyone thinks it's a good way forward though, the jury is still out.

Yes I can imagine there is mixed reception towards it. Especially by teachers and students who are used to doing it the old way. I personally think it will be a good change. For someone like me, in my mid 30’s who has been casually learning piano self taught just using method books for about 6 month, I always quite liked the idea of getting a proper teacher and learning towards getting a few grades. But I work 50+ hours per week and the last thing I want to do is take time off work, travel miles away to an examination centre to sing notes back at a piano examiner, which I probably should have done when I was 8 year old instead of 35 year old. So this new method is a lot more accessible for someone like me. There is also the fact that abrsm would probably go bankrupt if they didn’t do something like this, given the current pandemic! I wonder if teachers such as yourself will need to alter teaching methods for students wanting to do performance exams, or would it be the same methods used for students wanting to do the traditional practical exams? I’m guessing a lot of the skills will still apply for both of course.

@@darrenjones3080 I still teach my students the technical skills of sight reading and scales even if they opt for the performance exam. BTW - I do online lessons if that is ever something that might interest you, either live over Skype or via an appraisal / correspondence service. www.music-online.org.uk/p/skype-lessons.html

Nice video, about the 3 pieces are students allowed to just memorize the piece or they need to look at the music sheet while playing?
@MusicOnlineUK4 жыл бұрын
Students can choose to memorize or not, it will not in itself will not affect the mark. The examiner is only interested in the "performance". If playing from memory enhances your performance, for example you might play more musically if you are not distracted by "notes". Additionally, in the higher grades, page turns can sometimes distract, but on the other hand others might find just having the music there gives them confidence. All that said, I would encourage regular practice WITH the music, even if we think we know a piece, since sometimes bad habits creep in without noticing and keeping an eye on what you are playing serves as a constant check. Also, I try to encourage my students to not look at their hands when playing and hence improve their sense of piano geography and this in turn does wonders for sight reading. A student who always memorizes everything is often a bad sight reader.
