Having run CNCs since the mid 90s, I must say this is an amazing machine. We have nothing even close to it.

Nice to know, I could do this part without a lathe, or a ball-nose end mill. Other than that, I do accept this video as an amazing demonstration of the capability of the machine.

@ 9:43 Is the finishing pass a result from the relaxation of tool deflection or was there an actual axis movement there. If there was, it was imperceptible.

That was very cool. I love how it slows down to get a more polished finish I have questions for a machinist. ( I'm not a machinist by any stretch of the imagination. I'm more of a measure it with a micrometer, mark it with a crayon then cut it with an ax guy). 1) Was that steel or aluminium that was getting worked? 2) Normally this would have been done with some kind of cutting oil? 3) What was the last step the machine did? Thanks

Newbie machinist here (just under a year in) 1. Aluminum. 2. Normally, no. Air is sufficient, and recommended for the end mills here. Otherwise, or mills like mine (slower, non-carbide cutters) we use coolant to keep the metal and cutter cool 3. It was probing to make sure everything was to size. I know in my shop, we go to the thousandth of an inch, so everything has to be precise. I just wish I had that tool. We have to manually measure everything, lol

1. Depending on whether this was made in the USA or Europe, if in the USA it looks like 1117L, or any highly leaded material that makes it free machining and gives a nice finish. Europe could be 16MnCr5. Very common there. It is definitely steel. 2. Normally you would use coolant. Even with a carbide cutter. Some are designed to be used without coolant but those are usually inserted cutters. Many times they don't use coolant for the demonstrations so you can see what is happening. Not using coolant and cutting the way they did there is a very real possibility of the part being out of tolerance from thermal expansion. 3. That last tool was a Renishaw part probe. It is used for locating the the X, Y, Z on set up or, as they did, you can use it to verify and measure the part. 30 years as a Tool and Die Maker and CNC programmer.

Is that a feed rate issue or a look ahead issue thats causing that jerking in the 5 axis milling and chamfering ops?

Drew RTCP function is apparently on, so the I don't think the feed rate or look ahead is responsible for the jerk, maybe it was caused by the big tool axis variation during steps :).

It's an articulation issue. Machine needs to slow down to hit exact points

Eh I still see a couple problems. Engraving 90 degrees normal to the surface where surface speed approaches zero, instead of 45 degrees normal to surface. That tool will lose about 0.007" length in a shift. That crescent pocket looks to be forcing the tool to one side from a drive surface function or similar making unnecessary C axis rotation 180 and causing extra scrub time, but I'm not sure how I'd fix that. The cutting vector should be able to freely rotate around the tool axis keeping the feed rate up. It really wants to keep the cutting towards the back or right of the tool. Looks more like an awkward moment from the geometry engine of the CAM package but it could be programmer preference. Same thing pops up with the chamfer tool except on the two tapered bores it worked fine. Open versus closed chain or the chain/surface direction is 180 in the model maybe?
