Episode 100 of Love At First Scent
This was a KZbin Live broadcast streamed on Monday 29th June 2020. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
In this episode, I presented a live interview with Renaud Salmon, the new Creative Experience Officer at Amouage. We talked about his background in the perfume industry, his plans for the future of Amouage and, of course, why he chose to launch his tenure at the brand by releasing not a new creation, but a flanker (Interlude Black Iris Man; here's a link to my KZbin review • Amouage Interlude Blac... ).
--
Many thanks for watching. And a special thank you to all my followers and supporters for helping me reach this wonderful milestone. 100 episodes! Here's to the next 100!

Thanks for the interview, Dariush. It seems that Renaud is an introverted and thoughtful person, which means that he articulates only a small fraction of what's going on in his mind. We perhaps shouldn't be disappointed by his suggestion that the releases under his direction will be more "enjoyable." I sense his vision is more complex than creating more "mass-appealing" fragrances. Anyway, Renaud's modesty and honesty pleasantly surprised me.

Congratulations for getting to episode 100, Mr.P. Just managed to catch the last 15mins of the interview due to a miscalculation in the time of broadcast (+8hrs GMT). Mr. Salmon has a very different energy & personality to his predecessor. He's definitely still settling in. No doubt he will have his own vision and direction for the brand. I also get the feeling that he's very aware, sensitive and respectful of the legacy of the fragrances already within the brand. Still too early to tell what's going to happen so hopefully the next 6 months will be interesting but it does seem he has a personal framework already in mind. Thank you for this episode. Congratulations again, here's to the next 100 more episodes.

Missed the live but watched it now with great interest! As always Mr. P. conducted the interview with maestria. Mr. Salmon came across as sensitive, thoughtful and authentic. I loved the way he answered all questions with reflection and honesty. Such qualities are all too rare these days. I entirely relate to his views of bringing about something beautiful and enjoyable without having first to wade through unpleasantness. As Guy Robert once famously said: « un parfum doit avant tout sentir bon ». Amen to that. Hence I am very excited to discover Amouage’s next releases. And my best wishes of success to Mr. Salmon.

Surprised that mr. Renaud shared his creative direction on basenotes last april: Don't expect a complete 180 move or some kind of "total re-boot". I think that longstanding fans should not be lost. Here are a few of the elements: - The narrative will evolve as, in the last years, it had become quite autobiographical. - The fragrances in the work are, for most, going back to the roots of the brand, in a way. We are working on relatively rich, textured blends - for some slightly forceful. We have seen that Overture and Rose Incense have been very well received and, in my opinion, they have that signature that gave Amouage some of its uniqueness. We are also bringing back some of the inspiration (and ingredients directions) to Oman. - The creative process with the perfumers and craftsmen will be more open and transparent. I hope that it makes sense and helps to understand where Amouage is going!

What a lovely personality he is! I see how he struggles a necessity to abide by laws of gender rules for such a classical brand as Amouage... The only compromise there was an intellectually contexted Library collection. They would rather imho tend to a model of yin and yang vibrance perfumes which to an exrent overcome the dichotomy of man and woman in favour of energies...

I have feeling his take would be different from Chong. Chong drove the brand creatively focusing on Western inspiration (i.e. Puccini, New York, etc) using Oman ingredients. My gut is telling me he will be doing the opposite - Focusing on the authenticity of Oman while making it acceptable to the Western world. I’m not sure how I would feel about that and will await. But, honestly, I didn’t like his answer on Interlude flanker - sounded like he compromised. Cheers to 100!

Thank you for the comment. I am indeed inspired by Oman and the approach of luxury and richness that is very different from everything I had experienced before in the Middle East. But my references remain rooted in International art and culture, and fragrances - so it will be a blend. I don’t like to read that the Interlude Black Iris answer sounded like I compromised because I don’t have that feeling. It does not bring a totally new narrative (that’s my decision) but no compromise was made during its creation. I hope that you will like where we will be going in the future!

Renaud Salmon Thanks for the revert Renaud! As an Amouage fan myself, I would understand the expectation from the market and I believe we all want to make sure the brand lives on with this new story under your creative leadership. At least you know - Amouage fans spare no expense in getting great product and feel protective if suddenly their brand goes into “designer” territory. Good luck!

To say that Amouage was too conceptual and weird is such a disservice. Amouage, especially the older creations were stunning in their notes and stood apart. There’s no creativity in remixing these classics. Now you have made a reflection flanker in a different concentration. Amouage should focus back on quality ingredients.
