Live Interview with Winger on Tour - with Kip Winger and Music Host Cathy Rankin

If you're one of the people who misjudged the band Winger, and specifically frontman Kip Winger, back in the MTV days, you're not alone. But over time, many have come to realize it is one of the best rock bands out there, and has been for a long time. Music Host Cathy Rankin sits down for a backstage interview with Kip to discuss some of the band history, new music, passion projects and more. An insightful look into one of the most underrated but highly accomplished musicians and true composers in rock and roll.

I agree, great interview. Winger is incredibly good. By far the best band back in that musical period. Far far above the level of what most considered talented at that time. Winger music has transcended time easily. The subject material is today, as poignant and present, as any rock music written in the last 50 years. The quality of the musicianship along with the songwriting, deserves only the highest accolades. The fact that the core members for the last 35 years have stayed connected says volumes of the what and why of great music and great musicians. “Can’t get enough. It’s never enough”.......

This brings back great memories of my start in the Military. I remember when thing weren't going so great and things got tough in the military, I could hum a Winger song along with a few others to put me in a better place. It would take my mind off of being cold or hot of just plain miserable. Thanks for the interview, you got me listening to Winger again. They sound so much better than other 80's bands and I think it is because they just love and enjoy playing.

Yeah, the Winger-memembers seem to be real close to each other, like real freinds. I like that a lot. I beleive not many bands are like that. Def Leppard also seems to be a very cool bunch, all freinds 4 life. My two favorite Bands !

Great interview and you touched on many of the things Kip (and the Winger band members) stand for, and that is choosing musicianship over money. After watching his documentaries on “the making of”.......which they didn’t try and profit off of, its evident why they write and record...... Nice interview, hard to conduct with all the commotion I'm sure. An oldie you might like is them early morning on a Canadian MTV style show called Much Music. A Vee-jay named Erica Ehm interviews them and they sound superb on the two tunes they do where they just "Wing" it lol, pun intended. Basic Shure mic set-up, acoustic guitars and some dude bored out of his skull in the background and Reb and Kip kick azz ;-)

I knew Metallica since i was a kid growing in a different world than most people . Some ex comunist country. I always tought it was a very simple and boring music. Winger i listen for 7 years i think. I can't get enough , like they said :) Most good things in this world are underrated. Is normal. Just look left and right. I don't wanna be like most people. To do what they do. To listen their music. To ignore or hate what's original and unique.

I thank Metallica for Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and even a few tunes off the Black album. And maybe two songs off Load/Reload. But that was fkn ions ago, and they haven't sounded decent since. Winger on the other hand has continuously progressed. They had interesting and original compositions since the start, and even though they had some huge, ballady choruses, they were simultaneously hard rocking and sort of progressive. And she's right, they were technically better than most of their peers, at songwriting and musicianship. I will always proudly wear my Winger shirt.

Agree about Reb and Rod, but Kip is highly underrated. He's an extremely talented writer and composer, not just in the rock genre, but has done amazing stuff in classical music. His voice was incredible live at the show after the interview, and he's a solid bass player, too, so I think the band overall is very talented. And no, I can assure you I didn't want to bang him, lol - my family was with me at the interview right off camera, and Kip was very gracious to my daughter.
