“Baby Song” is a new original release by the female fronted band, Wicked Kiss, which is the brainchild of sister act Barb "Thee Animal" (female drummer) and Cathy Rankin (Vocals).
The original song was born in the late-80s Arizona rock scene as a collaboration between Barb and her Whiskey Blu bandmate, Wendy Rae, during a late night of jamming while watching MTV’s popular music video rotation. The girls noticed almost every song seemed to refer to women as “baby” in the verse, chorus or even right in the title. Thinking it was ridiculous, they quickly came up with a beat, melody and Wendy’s lyrics, in a tongue-in-cheek protest of the overused cliché. The song quickly became a fan favorite at their gigs, but was never properly recorded by the band.
In 2020, Barb formed Wicked Kiss as a fun passion project. Little sis, Cathy, began helping out on vocals since she had often tagged along with Barb’s former band and knew (and loved) the Baby Song. The sisters agreed to focus on the music they loved and grew up on, as well as work on writing some new originals inspired by the sounds of favorite female artists and classic rock and icons such as Pat Benetar, Stevie Nicks, the GoGos, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Heart, Linda Ronstadt, the Bangles and more. But their first goal was to start with updating the Baby Song to give it the proper recording and credit it deserved. As the two began reinventing the song with the help of guitarist, John Bronson (Metalhead/Zowie Bowie/Superhero), they discovered a new, and much more personal interpretation of the lyrics after decades of being females in male dominated industries. The song became an anthem of empowerment and self-acceptance, delivered with humor and sass.
Never ones to shy away from going for their dreams, Barb and Cathy decided to take things a step further and invite Rosie Langley (Violinist for Jeff Lynne’s ELO, and one of Barb’s major inspirations) to add a special performance on the song. Much to their shock and excitement, Rosie agreed, and the project took flight.
The Baby Song is for anyone who believes in following your true dreams, finding your voice, expressing yourself in your OWN way, and being who you want to be rather than fitting into the boxes or expectations that others put on you, and above all, NEVER giving up or giving in. We hope you enjoy!
