I was pulling a SWR rig last year with a Scotty release off my downrigger. I had a lot of hits, but I could never get catch a fish.They was gone by the time I got to the rod

that's unfortunate. Typically when this happens you might want to check that you're really loading up the rod and got that big bend in it so that when it releases it's setting the hook properly. Another tip is to leave the rod in the holder and immediately reel down after the rod pops to catch up to the fish is a tactic a good amount of captains do on their boats. Just some tips to consider and see if it helps.
