This amusing video is still popping up as suggested viewing, years after its production. I’ve been to Hauterive Abbey and know the community. Fr Luc gives a charming overview of the monastic ideal but he seems a bit insincere at times, almost to the point of not believing the message.

@@ologmonastery1049 I think you are not fair with your comment. Fr. Luc presents monastic life in a friendly and fun way. And he makes it clear that monastic life is the search for God and that He is present throughout the monk's journey. Greetings from Spain. God bless you.

A wonderful encapsulation of much of the rule of St Benedict. For those of us who cannot be monks, we can be oblates. For those who cannot be oblates we can still live by these rules.

0:57 ... From the Holy Rule of St. Benedict: "Regard all utensils and goods of the monastery as sacred vessels of the altar, aware that nothing is to be neglected." (Ch. XXXI) "If anyone, however, handleth the goods of the monastery slovenly or carelessly let him be reprimanded and if he doth not amend let him come under the discipline of the Rule." (Ch. XXXII)

Yeah, he prolly had to do a few thousand Hail Mary's for that broom, huh? 8-D
@nathanhart62187 жыл бұрын
This is a very large distinction between rules and constitutions for many follow the Rule of St. Benedict while having different constitutions. Nevertheless the monks of the Cistercian Order to which this monk belongs adhere to the Rule of St. Benedict as the Cistercians of the common observance and the strict observance are reforms of Benedictine monasticism.

Hey Mr Monk what is a pentagram doing in the garden's window 1:22 ?
@am46357 жыл бұрын
It is used to represent the 5 wounds of Jesus. Some wise guy in the 19th century figured it could be outlined as a ram's head with two horns. So they stole it from us, just like St. Peter's cross symbol. But like I said before, it was being used in satanic theatrical events in the 19th century, so most likely the church was built before then or at least before the symbol was being seen as such.
