Indeed. I've listened to Opeth since they released Morningrise in 1996 and I can't pick any "fave song" since there are sooo many good songs that I love for different reasons. I couldn't even make a top 10 list of Opeth songs. Btw, I've got a link to one of the funniest youtube videos I've seen that is named "Opeth kill aunt May" (Spidermans Aunt), a very short humorous clip that use Ghost of Perdition: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3jOgqSklM-Dl6s 😀😀😀😀

I'm glad Mikael's found a way to scream sustainably. People say that his voice is just shot and he can't growl like he used to any more but it's pretty obvious that he's just learned how to work with it in a way that won't kill it within the next like 5 years - impressive, and great news for the fans since we can expect music for years to come. If you're keen, have a look at Demon of the Fall from the Roundhouse Tapes or anything from the Wacken Carnage with Bloodbath (Cancer of the Soul or Soul Evisceration would be great examples) on youtube, you'd find the stark contrast interesting for sure. Your videos are great!

It's funny because on the behind the scenes footage Mikael and the rest of the band were complaining that it was so cold that it made their fingers numb to the point that they could hardly play their instruments. Meanwhile Martín Méndez (bassplayer) is out there playing in his t-shirt. Haha. As for their magnum opus you could ask 20 different Opeth fans and get 20 different answers. This song is probably what most people recommend to beginners though. My favourite song is When.

You'd love their older live stuff like The Roundhouse Tapes (2007). The production is also super tight and you can see the old guitar & keyboard players (Peter Lindgren & Per Wiberg). Plus the bass player (Martin Mendez) is whipping his long hair around. "Under The Weeping Moon" is a masterpiece from that show. It's from their first album (Orchid 1995), but the production in this live version is WAY better than the original recording, which was great and all, but a bit unpolished and rough way back in 95. Enjoy!🤘

To answer your question. Opeth doesn't have a magnum opus type of song cause almost all of thier songs are a magnum opus in their own way. Ghost of Perdition is definitely thier most popular song and i would put it in my top 5. If u want the magnus opus song for riffs it is Blackwater Park. Magnum opus for outro then it is Deliverance. So each song has something special. So yea Opeth doesnt only have 1 masterpiece magnum opus song but have about 80 magnum opus songs. Hope this answer helped. Few recommendations: Godheads Lament, Moonlapse Vertigo, Serenity Painted Death, Blackwater Park, Bleak, The Leper Affinity, The Grand Conjuration, Baying of the Hounds, Deliverance, Masters Apprentices, A Fair Judgement, Coil/Heir Apparent.

Which I know is less than helpful, but I love the band SO MUCH and just, I really don't know. They have so many excellent, transcendently epic songs. Storm Corrosion - Ljudet Innan. Definitely won't be disappointed. Storm Corrosion is a solo project of Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) and Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree). Literally a song that has a soothing serenity about it. Folks, Mikael didn't stop screaming because he had issues with his voice. He has always growled with his false chords, and they aren't connected to your vocal chords so that they could hurt his voice. Live now he doesn't sound as distorted, because he isn't pressing the false cords as much together to create a more resonant sound. More pressure would mean more energy and because he already has to do so much live, it is just more taxing. The reason why he stopped screaming was because he was much more interested in developing as a singer, and felt that he plateaud with screaming and wasn't that interested in it anymore.

They have so many magnum opus songs it's almost impossible to pick one. But from a prog metal perspective, the song "Blackwater Park" is widely considered as their magnum opus as it is such a mighty composition and probably features four or five of the greatest riffs ever written. I am not entirely sure whether you're gonna enjoy it as there is no clean singing in that one it's all growls. However there is a mesmerizing bridge part for almost two minutes which will serenade you. Another pick is 'Deliverance' which is used to close out many of their concerts. That has both cleans and growls and a mind-blowing outro.
@lircox
@lircox 3 жыл бұрын
Even though as several people have said, this song isn't considered to be their magnum opus, it is still pretty damn special and one of their top songs for sure. And it seems to have really have clicked with you as well, I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if it remained your top Opeth pick for a long time. It was probably a blessing you did GoP early so that you weren't completely turned off by the growls
@bobbyanderson7133

Joakim, the keyboardist, does the high harmonies that i'm pretty sure Steven Wilson helped with on the studio recording. But, an interesting thing to me is that during the first break down, with the aye aye aye's, when the highest harmony kicks in, Joakim sings the line Mikael was singing - the aye aye aye part, and Mikael moves up to do that high harmony. If you watch closely, around 6:47, there's a part where you can see Mikael is not singing the aye aye's and is doing the ooo's. I've seen a few people reacting to this that thought it was the keyboardist hitting that high harmony. It was Mikael.

For me this is probably the closest to a magnum opus as it gets with them. They do have many long and dynamic songs that could each be a standout song to any other band, so it's kind of a close call. But to me Ghost of Perdition has something about it that makes it special even for Opeth standards. It's hard to say what that is. Maybe it's the lack of cheesiness that sometimes creeps in their other songs a little bit, combined with the grandiose scale of the song. Everything just kind of flows into itself without it sounding to forced or clishé. But it might also just be this fantastic live performance that cemented it in my head as their standout song. However, I do think that a band like Opeth is best measured by complete albums and not so much by single songs. My personal favorite is Blackwater Park (whose title track you should listen to eventually). To me it's the pinnacle of Opeth and absolutely perfect with not a single weak moment in it. I do believe it will stand the test of time and will be remembered as one of the greatest albums in rock and metal history. But the great thing about Opeth is that they have so much good music that you might not agree and prefer a different album. :)

@@MusicCatsandCoffee I heard the album version first. In this regard I'm like you and usually listen to studio recordings first before checking out live performances. But it must have been only a short time before Live at Red Rocks came out, because I barely remember knowing the song without this live version. I'm kind of late to the whole Opeth thing myself. I discovered them a couple of years ago and there are still two or three albums missing that I haven't heard yet. That's kind of the disadvantage of going through music album by album. Especially if you want to give the music the time it needs to grow on you. So I totally understand why you can't do it that way on your channel. In fact reaction channels like yours are now a new kind of motivation for me to listen to new music instead of repeating all the good stuff that I already know, which I tend to do way too much. For example, I only recently listened to the Watershed album for the first time, to be able to watch your reactions to Burden and Hessian Peel without being spoiled. :)

At one point you put up, 'This song is the definition of epic'. For me, Opeth completely mastered that art - how to make a song which contained so many interesting parts, yet still flowed meaningfully over the course of the necessary runtime, using the contrasts to accentuate the positives of each part. They have many, many songs that fall into this style, and each will be championed by someone as their 'magnum opus'. But, they're not alone in this game and some bands have taken it to greater extents then Opeth, even. My song picks for 'the definition of epic' would not actually be Opeth songs, but 'Light of Day, Day of Darkness' by Green Carnation, and most of all 'Tulimyrsky' by Moonsorrow. If you ever check out Tulimyrsky (and I can't recommend it enough), make sure you find the video that has an English translation of the Finnish lyrics.

Lauren, I think it's time for you to check out the band Jinjer. First of all, you'd get another perspective on "demon voice" lol. And then, they are a very interesting and tight band musically. And Opeth is one of their influences:) Their latest song - Vortex - just came out recently.

@@jonkwape3097 I don't really choose what songs I do. My Opeth journey is dictated by the comments/polls, and I have no clue what album anything is on. :)

@@MusicCatsandCoffee Oh well, that's the downside of having a reaction channel, see ya when the Opeth community runs out of pre-Heritage songs lol. Joking of course, I would gladly see more of anything from Opeth. Keep going, your channel is interesting.

Your obsession with bass players is funny. Michael Schuman a.k.a. Mikey Shoes from Queens of the Stone Age is not a chill bass player. If a song calls for screaming, he does it since Josh does not. He also does this cute leg swivel thing and the occasional kick. I enjoy watching him in action. And to your point about live vs. album, QOTSA performed “Misfit Love” on the Henry Rollins Show. Josh was dancing like nobody’s business, but his falsetto was off. I think the dancing kind of made up for it though. 😁

I do have to defend my man Josh. I have gone to three of their concerts - the Era Vulgaris tour, the …Like Clockwork tour, and the Villains tour. He sounded great every time. Like the albums.

They're not a "hits" band. I guess if you have to pick favorite/classic/essential track, it's probably Demon of the Fall. There's not one song that you're ALWAYS going to hear at an Opeth concert.

The final track to this concert was a track called "Deliverance". I highly recommend at least the studio version, and if you feel so inclined the live version from Red Rocks. There's another live version from Shepherds Bush Empire (which is even better) but that one will get blocked.
