This update is a joke. An incoherent mess of random cosmetics, most of which are not fitting at all for the game at all. Broken maps and a broken taunt on launch (and likely other issues I'm unaware of as of writing this). Mediocre or flat out tacky unusual effects, some that look like they're from different media franchises entirely. At least SOME of the new maps are of markedly higher quality, and I can enjoy those. I understand Halloween is traditionally themed, wacky, but this update is pathetic and inexcusable in terms of quality control. It's just not TF2 anymore. It's very depressing that this is the standard now. It just feels hollow. Enjoy the bot wave.

What makes this update worse is that it felt like Valve was actually starting to improve with item quality, with last winter and this summer's updates being proof of that. The potential is there but it felt like Valve just undid everything.

The cosmetics feel like they were picked in a rush, who wants most of these? At least the maps are better in quality than most we've gotten from past years but 12 is just too many. Even though I like ZI, it was clearly picked because of popularity, maps like devastation and woods are so bad in quality or balance.

It's a sole individual that has been single-handedly responsible for nearly all tf2 content being added and chosen for the past several years, aside from a temporary contractor and Jill occasionally coming in to add/fix a few things. Eric S is the one who has been dedicated to providing this garbage for years, you can confirm this by navigating to the TF2 News section in the TF2 Community Hub, clicking on a random announcement and going to its respective thread discussion page. Quote the announcement in your reply and the quote will always say "quote=erics" at the beginning of each one. He is to blame for everything these past years.

Eric is a game developer, which is already a ton of stuff to know. He's been in the company since 2004 and I'm sure he worked at some point in this game prior to now. He's not an artist and that's not what he should do. That should be another team member's work, but that's not the case and he has to browse the workshop ratings while managing the coding and addition side of things.

50:50 ive always had a small hope that the server browser would come back in some way, get more exposure, sort of show newer players that custom servers exist and are important. But seeing this vscript path theyre taking I'm sad to believe that they're instead trying to actively blot out the custom servers in favour of their own official casual servers. That means no extra server plugins, no joining friends games midway through, no team decisions, no grassroots, no power to the players. It feels like it's a slow march to being forced under overlords and current tf2 playerbase just doesn't seem to care or even notice what was lost.

This update proves that valve can actually put some kind of effort in the game, they just choose not to. I remember when scream fortress used to be wacky yet cool at the same time. Now its nothing but “wacky/silly”, the art style at this point is fucking dead, and the quality of maps/hats/unusuals went completely down the drain. Oh and lets not forget the most current bot wave once again making this game unplayable again. I’m so sick and tired of valve taking one step forward and then 20 steps back. I’m going to be uninstalling this game, its just not for me anymore, summer 2023 gave me a matchstick of hope only to snuff it out. Tf2 was fun when I joined in 2011, now its just a shallow broken mess of a game basically on life support.

Unless Valve pulls a CS2 (copium), I don't think it will get any better from here. I think deep down I knew that the spirt of the game had died long ago, but I held on to the last shred of hope that Valve would do the right thing and do ANYTHING to make a step in the right direction. The file size will keep growing, the item list will grow more bloated, there will be 500 unusual effects, the framerate will keep dropping, and eventually the people who were blind or willfully ignorant of the downward spiral will turn around, shrug their shoulders, and move on to the next thing. Gunshot Bride - Remember that video? Remember the tight knit community? Remember all the friends you made? Remember your favorite community servers? It was all pulled away from you, slowly, with the passage of time. Each update ate away at the core of the game until nothing was left but the scraps. 2017 was 6 years ago. 2007 was almost 16 years ago. Valve stopped caring a long time ago, and I think the realization of what that actually means for the game has finally settled in. There will be no final sendoff, no last comic, no closure with a nice little bow. It will linger on Valve's servers forever, a specter of it's former self. Still lasted longer than Overwatch though.

I’m genuinely confused about the Shortness of Breathe, what’s not tf2 about it? The HECU mask was based on a gas mask design from the 1950’s and it’s not that out of the realm of the time line. I could see why it wouldn’t fit because its too detailed but… it’s too detailed for very tiny parts? What excuses the Mair Mask and Air Raider for pyro but not this? Secondly, I can get the medic hair being weird but besides it likely being an anime reference, how come it hasn’t come to thought it could also be used for something like a mad scientist loadout? It’s slightly more subtle than the jojo cosmetics we got for heavy. Plus with the bad “modeling”, besides the clipping on his forehead I just see it as some stylization with it’s prominent edges. Like with the Shortness of Breathe, how is the modeling considered more bad and not fitted for medic when theres the Flash of Inspiration for Engineer? Both are modeled similarly and I feel like both fit each of the characters. Even the Einstien for Medic himself, tho not modeled similarly, is almost the same concept, hair sticking up and shows some sharp edges.

To expand on the VScript rant: if you want to play custom game modes, go to community servers. If you want to *make* and host a custom game mode, again, that's what community servers are for (and optimally you'd use SourceMod instead of VScripts to do it, but that's an unrelated rant). Trying to force your game mode into the limelight by getting Valve to officially add it to the map rotation does nobody any good, and once the hype dies down, you have done nothing but waste your time on an empty venture nobody will remember.

As always, I agree with most of Zesty's criticism, even if I don't always agree with the reasoning. Take the (unpainted) Concealed Convict, for example. Compared to many of Spy's other jackets this one is downright subtle. The stripes are relatively faint and align with proper team colouration and the silhouette is completely maintained. It is far less visually noisy than even some Valve-created cosmetics (like that clown suit). Does this make it a GOOD cosmetic? Hell no, because it ONLY works in a convict loadout. If you unbox this, you have exactly one thing you can do with it. It's restrictive and clashes with the majority of Spy's cosmetics. Zesty could have pointed this out, but instead he went with a much weaker "visual noise" argument.

The only cosmetics i like fron this is the mummy head and the cast for Medic. We just don't have enough stuff of the Mercs being beaten and battered and showing that they just finished a fight but are being tossed into another before they can really heal- stuff you would expect from a game where some dudes are beating the crap out of each other! But its just... Slop. Its tiny pieces of good content in the endless slop.

God the elite grades are so weirdly lame on this one. It's almost like they knew you'd complain if they were tacky, and instead made the restricteds tacky. They do know that the heavy mains will go hard for a hat like that though. Heavy mains have very specific tastes.

Cosmetic cases with tiered rarities were a mistake. Almost every single """Elite""" grade cosmetic has been complete garbage and funnily enough almost always one of the cheaper cosmetics in the case.

Halloween updates are the only time i play casual honestly and its only because i am trying to get all of the original Halloween restricted items but other then that i just play community servers, i started playing in 2019 and it was honestly better back then
