I think one thing that Colin fails to factor in when talking about there being no games is that a lot of people complain because there is very little in the way of groundbreaking software which justifies the new console they paid £450 for. Sony made it their identity to be the one to push technology through innovative and incredibly polished software for two whole generations, so I don't think it's consumers fault for buying into this system with expectations of that continuing. There's nothing wrong with 3rd party AAA but it's clear that a lot of the big publisher money that would previously go into single player AAA is just being pumped into GAAS which frankly most people just don't care about outside of the big ones. It just feels like publishers throwing everything at the wall in the hopes that one thing sticks and makes them a consistent stream of income, and as a consumer that is not exciting at all. Personally I'm always able to find something to play, but there is definitely a more negative energy in the gaming space this generation, at least from what I have experienced in my circles. I think lots of people, especially more casual gamers will show more caution at the beginning of next generation in terms of not buying hardware at launch. Great ep as always. Summon Sign is becoming my favourite show !
@LankyPlank
@LankyPlank Ай бұрын
@BenderOfStrings @BenderOfStrings definitely not trying to downplay the quality of the PS5 hardware, it's an awesome console with tonnes of potential obviously. However when most of what's coming out is cross-generation it doesn't exactly make the most of that great hardware. There's a definite focus on frame rate and resolution only. Like with your SSD example, the focus should be "what can we do with this new tech?" And all we've seen it do for the most part, is improve load screen times, to me that's not a gameplay improvement. I understand your argument that it helped you finish more games, but really for such a massive technological leap (even ahead of PC at the time!) for it just to improve load times...Play god of war Ragnarok and tell me it's not full of slowly walking through tight gaps in what feels like slow motion because it had to be developed for the previous console too so it's full of the same bottlenecks we've always seen. Go and watch the Mark Cerny tech showcase where he describes how the SSD will remove said level design bottlenecks. It didn't happen. Really not trying to be overly negative but for me the PS5 has not been used anywhere near its true potential and we're on the verge of a new console within the next 6 months. Sony should have dropped the PS4 almost immediately in favour of the next generation in terms of first party software but they chose to cater for the existing player base, which makes business sense but it's again not exciting for PS5 owners who expect that jump between generations. Also it's obviously not just a problem exclusive to Sony, the industry as a whole (outside of Nintendo) is operating in exactly the same way, trying to maximise how many places a game can be played. I just think 1st party need to be this generation only, and really be the system seller content that shows what this new hardware is all about :)

I'd argue that while games have continually iterated and gotten significantly better and more sophisticated there's not been a "groundbreaking" leap in technological prowess in the console space since the PS3 era. I don't think you buy a new console for "groundbreaking". I think you buy it to have a good experience and to play good games, which the PS5 delivers on very well. Saying "most of what comes out is cross generation" is choosing to ignore that there are plenty of current gen only games and the games that are cross generation look and run significantly better than their PS4 counterparts. I have a very powerful gaming PC that God of War looks incredible on, but it wouldn't make sense for me to complain that that same game runs on a 4 or 6 year old graphics card. If you don't care about the visual experience or quality of life, then indeed there might not be much of a reason to get the new console - but then that would be a you problem. I'd be curious to hear from someone that had a PS4, bought a PS5, ran them both side by side, and concluded that the PS5 was not a significant visual and experiential upgrade Here's a bunch of games that only came to current gen this year and last www.denofgeek.com/games/every-ps5-exclusive-game-not-released-for-ps4-2023/

@LankyPlank Ай бұрын
@@jdude2175 @jdude2175 We both fundamentally disagree on what a generation looks like I think. For me, having always been in the console space it has always been "ok, new console, fresh slate, let's see what we can do." And the player base of the new generation benefits from that approach or at the very least finds it more exciting. If I wanted frame rate and resolution I'd be on PC as you said, where it is in its very nature a more iterative space in terms of technical improvements with the endless possibilities of hardware. I'm talking about system seller games, of which yes most of those are usually from first party. This generation we've seen very few of those and imo that does make the space feel quite stale compared to previous generations. There are many more reasons i.e. endless remasters, games running poorly at launch, no E3 or big consistent showcases, Sony's inability to communicate ANYTHING, cash-grab GAAS being so many studios main focus. To name a few :) Again, not gonna sit here and say there are no games to play, because clearly there are. But some people, including Colin, seem to be really struggling to see the issues people have with this generation when imo they're very clear. "Where are the games" doesn't need to be taken so literally.

Let me pushback a bit on “so much to play” When people say that, it’s not only about the triple A exclusives. Its more of a feeling of disappointment in your favorites. Let me illustrate. Rockstar? Valve? ND?Taking forever. Bioware? Bethesda? Rocksteady? DICE? Uninspired, shell of itself. Visceral? Japan? Closed. KONAMI for God sake even had ONE new good game on PS4. We are talking about the devs which made arguably the best games of all time either taking a decade or just washed up. Whatever the reason (economic, the players, expectations etc), that is the sentiment. I mean just compare the best games of each generation and you’ll see how uninspired and unimpressive this gen is. Bioshock, Half Life 2, The Last of Us, Uncharted 2, GTA series, Mass Effect???? MGS2&3, RE4, Halo 2, SotC?? GoW 2018, The Witcher 3, Persona 5, Bloodborne, Elden Ring(?), RDR2?? We are about to be on what is equivalent to 2005-2011-2018 Next year!

Times change unfortunately. Rockstar will only release GTA 6 this gen, Valve might make one game per gen now as well if you're lucky, BioWare & Rocksteady don't exist anymore they're just names, Konami aren't interested in investing the sort of money it takes to develop AAA games in 2024 etc etc etc. There are definitely still companies making top quality AAA and high end AA video games nowadays though such as FromSoft, Capcom, Larian, Atlus, Ryu Ga Gotoku, Square Enix, CD Projekt RED, Nintendo, Falcom, Santa Monica, Sucker Punch, Housemarque etc and we are seeing the emergence of new very talented teams in South Korea & China. It obviously depends on your personal taste how interested you are in all those studios I listed and their work though.

Of course the natural answer, as it often does, lies in the middle ground. So yes there's whiny little runts out there, and then there's the "I'm drowning in games" Colins of the world... The reality is that a lot of what has come out this year (on PS) doesn't have mass appeal. I'm not talking about FF7/Helldivers or even the new IP Stellar Blade, but Granblue is pretty niche (at least in the West) and Rise looked ok but has to follow in the boots of Ghost and comes from a dev that a lot of people don't care for their style of games. That's not to say gamers shouldn't at least try and broaden their horizons, but Sony don't help themselves. Do the remake of Bloodborne (easy win, if done right), hurry up a bit with the next Uncharted (personally I'm looking forward to a non Naughty Dog take), establish some new 1st party IP, put Bungie to task (their number of employees does NOT correlate to their output). There are solutions that don't require a huge amount of insight, and yes it's a risky industry right now but there's solutions to that too beyond layoffs. To dismiss the discourse out of hand is, quite frankly, obtuse

Are people actually claiming that there's nothing to play or are people just getting impatient/excited for what Sony's cooking and would like a bit of communication? This is like telling GoT fans to stop asking about Winds of Winter and play something else. Obviously I'm not privy to what people are writing in to Colin but I really doubt it's that there's nothing to play. More just anticipation for Sony to say something. When I get one half-way off, I start on the other sock. When both are half way off, I usually will take about 15 minutes to chill with them half-on my feet. As a fan of the legend of heroes series basically what Colin was talking about was this: the first three games came to the west, the next two never did, and then the last 4 (5 with reverie) came to the west. They are all connected and take place in a diffrent country, each story arc, BUT they have cameos, party members,side stories, big events etc crossing over. So missing the Crossbell arc, which was two games in between trails in the sky and cold steel was a big issue until they fixed it by translating and releasing them as well to the west. Why was it a big issue? Because stories, and certain party members/allies are "assumed" to be known to the player and when they show up is more than just a fan service, they serve a well written purpose that pay off if you keep up with them through multiple games - certain actions, motives, where they are going with x, y and z is understood before it plays out etc. Some of these stories and character developments pay off after 100s of hours through multiple games - which might be too slow for some, but for people who are invested and played them all it was worth it in the end.

Luckily the card system actually works a lot better than I thought it would and I also love the mechanic that lets you bank your levels so you can go from lvl 1 to 10 in an instant with the positive effect being your stats scale up to become higher than they would be just going one at a time. Story is exactly up my ally too so far with plenty of mystery and a good empire for your scrappy team to fight, too early to say what I'll think of it overall but really enjoying it so far.

I think game media is kinda igniting that because they want to create negativity and that negativity returns them as engagement. As someone who play video games since mid 90s actively, I believe that gaming is better than ever. There are infinite options. Whatever hardware you have, if you are general gaming enthusiastic, there is no way you can catch up all games coming while doing your daily responsibilities. If you have very specific taste and interest in genre, that is not a problem with gaming industry. And if you believe that games were better in the past, you can always go back and play them. They did not go anywhere.

The write-in about games taking too long is nonsense in my opinion. All that matters is the quality of the game, the state of the game when it releases. In Horizon forbidden west, we received one of the greatest video game sequels of all time. The game is freaking pristine, still the best looking open world game by far. And the Lore is so deep and interesting, I'm fascinated to see where part 3 goes.

I get the confusion with Kingdom Hearts sequels and Spinoffs but the first game has a very relatively easy Final Fantasy-ish story to follow with Disney characters. If you can follow the story of FF 16 you should be able to follow the first Kingdom Hearts story. If it’s the Disney characters that are really turning you off of the first game then just be honest that’s your problem.

You don't have to grind in Xenoblade 2 at all. You don't have to grind in most jrpg's these days, really. You usually just have to come up with a different strategy and engage with the game's systems instead of grinding in jrpg's, but instead people automatically default to grinding and then make the experience worse for themselves.

Dont you need to grind the certain abilities for the field skill?- forgot the name (was 2017 since I played) and you need certain blades special abilities for quest/story etc. I have finished xeno 1-3 and the dlcs and I have a memory of grinding in xeno 2 atleast, especially certain blades.
@LordlyWeeb

@quezcatol Well, apparently some people didn't have certain field skills unlocked and had to go out of their way to get them? But I've never experienced that and I played through the game twice. I don't even know how you have that happen.

I got suicide squad when it came out cuz i was smoking major copium. There was some fun to be had but overall not very good. And the endgame is even worse than you can imagine. Only 3 mission types give you xp to level up and move on.

If Mega Man comes back, it won't be a roguelike. It will be a game of service, many times more bloated than Avengers or suicide squad. With a gigantic road map, and a $99.99 deluxe version that gives you 24 hours early access to the game (that Colin will buy). 😂

Great sort it out by colin, regarding all the babies whining about not enough games. Another point, we've received a generations worth of outstanding first and second party games on PS5 already. Masterpieces like returnal, Spider-Man 2, Horizon forbidden West, gow ragnarok. And smaller incredible games like stray, kena Bridge of spirits etc. I've been getting deeply back into Horizon forbidden west the last the last month, and it still is by far the best looking open world game of all time, and by a large margin. There's such a wealth of content in that game, the actual fluid and responsive 60fps gameplay, which now looks incredible in performance mode.

Whoa.. Colin saying that female Twitch streamers are "putting their titties out for 14 year olds" is a wild, skewed-perception take. Very strange for a Libertarian to be blaming them for kids sneaking into 18+ streams. That said, yeah, we all get that people complaining about lewdness in video games are lame as hell.

is there a story behind the mega-cringe "sort it out!" announcement that Brad does every episode?

I don’t know if there is lore about the announcement style but the segment itself is a clever mechanism to trigger new areas of discussion outside of the usual gaming patter so I’m all for it.

It's just a segment he used to do on Frame Trap on Easy Allies that he's brought over. When Ben hosted that show on EZA he used to do a segment called "Hottake!" where he'd shout it out. Then when he left and Brad took over as host he came up with Sort it out as a spiritual successor to that segment.

I gotta give a little push back on SS kill the justice league. It was pretty fun playing the campaign and I think it's worth going through that. The guns the sunset overdrive gameplay and some of the bossfights were pretty fun. The live service aspect is completely arbitrary I wholeheartedly stand behind that. And it's sad because instead of competing with fortnite and Destiny, it could of easily been a better borderlands. That would of been sick.

@@user-dj9iu2et3r It really wasn't a big deal, and I'm sure it wasn't malicious or intentional on Colin's part, but watching her smile fade after that exchange broke my heart a little. If you've been in a relationship long enough and are even remotely observant, then you would know that there are times when we men accidentally put our foot in our mouths. And if you look at your girl in those moments you can see the joy being drained out of her face in real-time. The body language changes from glee to dejection. It was just a small moment, and maybe I extrapolated a lot more out of that exchange than what it actually was, but I can only call it how I see it.
