Live from RAF Marham, home of the F-35 Lightning a 5th Generation, multi-role, stealth fighter. Based here at Marham are the new recommissioned 809 Naval Air Squadron (NAS), the famous 617 'Dambusters' squadron and 207 Squadron, the OCU for both RAF and the Royal Navy.
809 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) disbanded in December of 1982, 9 months after a Squadron of Sea Harriers had been formed to fly from HMS Invincible and HMS Hermes at the height of the Falklands conflict. In early August of 1982 the Squadron sailed on the newly commissioned HMS Illustrious providing air defence for Port Stanley while the airport was upgraded to accept RAF Phantoms. Fast forward 41 years, 809 NAS re-commissioned as the second frontline F-35B Lightning Squadron based at RAF Marham. A commissioning ceremony took place in December 2023 to officially stand-up the Squadron.
617 Squadron is based at RAF Marham. The Squadron adopted its name and badge after the famous Dams Raid in 1943. Previous aircraft flown include the Avro Lancaster, Lincoln and Vulcan; English Electric Canberra; and Panavia Tornado. They are now flying the F-35B Lightning fifth-generation combat aircraft.
In 2014 617 Sqn, disbanded on 28 February, after returning from a final HERRICK deployment on 30 January. Began re-forming in 2016, in preparation to become the UK’s first frontline Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning unit. In 2018, our 617 Squadron Lightnings landed at RAF Marham, the unit’s new home. In 2019 the Lightning Dawn saw 617 Squadron deploy to RAF Akrotiri for Operation SHADER sorties and subsequent training alongside Israeli and Italian F-35s.
And in June 2020 , 617 Squadron embarked operational Lightnings aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth for the first time. In September, the unit returned to the ship, alongside visiting US Marine Corps F-35Bs, in preparation for the vessel’s Carrier Strike Group 21 first operational sailing in 2021.
207 Squadron is the joint RAF and Royal Navy Operational Conversion Unit for Lightning. It started as 7 Naval Air Squadron in 1916 at Petit-Synthe, France. The squadron then became part of the RAF in 1918 and in 1938, they became the Fairey Battle operational training unit at RAF Cottesmore. In 1968, 207 reformed at RAF Northolt as the RAF Communications Squadron, disbanding again in 1984. They then reformed again in 2002 at RAF Linton-on-Ouse as 207 (Reserve) Squadron conducting Basic Fast Jet Training for RAF and Royal Navy pilots, disbanding again in 2012. 7 years later in 2019, 207 squadron stood up as 207 Squadron at RAF Marham as the F-35 Lightning Operational Conversion Unit.
