He was making a left turn so first he looked to his right to make sure no cars were coming on the the right side then as he was turning across the street making the left he didn't look to his left till it was way too late.

So the news story from CBS LA showed what happened. He was going straight crossing a 2 lane 4-way intersection. He looked left but didn't look right till he was already in the middle of the intersection. The semi hit between the front fender and driver door making the car spin in place. It showed the street after the wreck and it looks like he did donuts in the middle of the intersection.
