For anyone who couldn't get what he was doing at 1:11, all he did was *drop down the layer with the dropdown arrow* so you can see all the strokes and elements within it, you can do the tutorial without dropping it down, as long as you click the circle on the right to select everything. Good luck!

How do you change the distance between the two objects? If I draw from the middle line they end up intersecting instead of mirroring off of the line.

Unfortunately your face hides the action you're doing on the layers. Kind of a bummer considering there's something there that we need to understand to initiate the symmetry. A person can figure it out, it just takes work to see better.

I realised that after upload! It's because the last tutorial I did was for After Effects, where I position the camera to the right, for all future Illustrator tutorials I've moved my face!

Yes, I realised this after uploading, I said 'twirl down layer' which means open up the layers contents I think. Regardless, there's a much easier way to do this now in the latest version of Illustrator: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5bJZHx8l7mBoKc&ab_channel=TipTut

This worked like a charm, but I am having trouble finalizing the artwork. I would usually use something like 'Expand Appearance', but that option is grayed out. The 'Expand' option is still there, but it only flattens the line work that I actually drew, not the shapes that were reflected. Any advice?

I cant remember exactly how I did it, but once you have the mirror you could just remove the effect, then duplicate the artwork? I'm sure theres a better way but I'm not at my desk to try it.

I had the same issue. If you unhide the original line you drew and select it, you can Object/expand appearance on that.

Try going into 'Object' in the menu, then click 'Expand Appearance'.

where you select which axis to mirror in the transform effects you have to change the copies at the bottom from 0 to 1

Hi I tried to do this and: 1. If I try to hide the layer, it doesn't work 2. I can only draw on the layer with the line, but when I do, it also reflects the line on next to whatever I'm drawing. The drawing successfully reflects, but it isn't symmetrical, and the line follows it Can anyone help me with this? Thank you!

if you mean create more than one copy of something, you can put whatever value in it, in 1:27 it shows him putting the value "1" where there was a "0"
