My first encounter with technology was encountering a BBC Micro Computer at junior school in 1980. It was in the corner of my classroom and I played games on it aged ten!

not sure if you mentioned it but one great thing that the Teletext Adapter could do is to load (Download?!) software through an analogue TV signal . . . as I young lad i regularly looked out the latest games an tools available . . .it amazed me that I could load software being broadcast over the radiowaves . . this was before the days of the world wide web

I've got a teletext adaptor sitting on a shelf for about 18 months now as I was going to do exactly this but haven't had time to do it.
@MatthewNorthMusic2 жыл бұрын
I managed to eventually get it going in about 3 hours! would have been half that if I didn't have a dodgy aerial socket and internal wiring!!! It also had a broken fuse holder. but I fixed that a while back!

@@MatthewNorthMusic Back when I first started looking at it a few people did mention about bypassing the tuner so composite goes direct to the board. I didn't like that idea as I wanted it to go RF but that is also an option (apparently) if anyone else wanted to try it. When I do get to it I've got a standalone RF modulator (from a common UK building trade supplier, wont name here) to use with this.

@@PeterMountUK you need a video amplifier before going direct into LK3 I think it needs 2v p-p

There was one of these in my school in the 90s, it was in one classroom but linked into the beeb network throughout the entire school, the arcornet. We could get teletext on every computer. By todays standards its not amazing but back then was kinda like an internet. 😎👍

Excellent! It's so tempting to hit the online tat bazaar and splash the cash on a cheese wedge! Must... resist... too many half finished projects, too little time. 🤔

So how do you get the music to come on as well
@tomkinsg2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for a great video Matthew. I am trying to get a cheese wedge working. its been a bit of a trial and error, not to dissimilar to your story. I am still not yet successful. I have confirmed i have composite coming out of my Raspi zero 2W but i am using a modulator (I don't have a VHS player to try). I have one super cheap modulator that gives out a low quality mostly black and white signal and i have a TV link (like others i have seen doing this) and i am getting no signal whatsoever to a TV RF in. I am a bit stumped if i am honest but with plug on. Thanks again for the video.
@MatthewNorthMusic2 жыл бұрын
Is the TV link like an RF transmitter kinda thing ? Basically anything like this will add more noise and if the signal isn't good to start with could be a problem. You can often find old VHS machines for a few quid on places like Facebook marketplace even if the deck doesn't work. Chances are the modulator will be fine

Hi Matthew , nice work there. I have heard of people using the old adaptor but I didn't realise the pages were coming from the internet. How are these pages created if Ceefax etc is no more? I know there are Teletext sites on the web but Ceefax ? Sorry for my ignorance?

They’re not. The Pi downloads the information it presents from the BBC website.

Nice. It's interesting that the ROM in the adaptor seems to support the fastext colour keys. Fastext only started around 1987, so I wonder if the adaptor had a ROM update to support this or is a later model, as I'm sure the earlier ones would have pre-dated fastext? kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6HJhqNveqdgiKM

@philwood185710 ай бұрын
Turned off? Teletext is still available on TVs, though many TV manufacturers have dropped it from more recent models. ITV may have switched their service off, but Ceefax's sucessor is still going. The BBC wanted to end the service to save a few quid, but the furore following their announcnement made them keep it, albeit with a reduced service.
