In 1983 I managed to convince my school friends to go to our first ever concert, Wham's Club Fantastic tour at the lyceum Ballroom in London. They all complained that it was going to be a crap concert and that George Michael was just a pretty face that probably couldn't sing. We were absolutely blown away by the power of his voice and his incredible stage presence. It was just amazing, so fortunate to have witnessed the start of his outstanding career.
@LMwhispers9 күн бұрын
People did write him off as some lightweight wanna-be and were always surprised by the extent of his talent and also how thoughtful and articulate he was about his craft, his influences, his knowledge of musical eras, types of music, etc. Interviews with him when he was just around 20 years old reveal someone incredibly aware with much depth.

At nearly 70 yrs old I've heard a lot of 'great' voices and pitch accuracy, technique is more or less a given but what is now a forgotten element is the actual 'pleasing' quality of the voice - how 'nice' or not it sounds, the actual character of the voice. Best example for me is Nat King Cole. Now years later upon more relaxed listening, George has this. A voice dripping in honey just as Nat does. Probably only a handful in history - sublime wonderful..
@Liam_Doherty_UK12 күн бұрын
Nat King Cole, even more impressive when you consider all those beautiful songs were done in 'one' vocal take...

It is really such a relief to hear again a real voice after so much artificial stuff. Sadly, I must admit that, while I knew him and his songs since long, and appreciated his singing talents, I never paid attention to details, nor gave him enough credits, and this for ONE reason : I grew up in a world where THIS, I mean, natural voices, were the standard. And, despite the fact that he's excellent, he's simply not a favourite of mine, musically speaking (but I really like the bass on this song, minimalist, yet effective) It was such a pleasure to hear again an expressive singer, who pronounces consonants, breathes, controls his diaphragm, and HEAR this, not having heavy editing that erases the human factor in music. THIS level of musical excellence should be the standard again.

This reminds me of the wise adage of "You PRACTICE at home. you REHEARSE in the studio ." Meaning all these cats and George showed up ready to focus on the final product , not figure it out while burning valuable time. I've found the most important aspect of any performance is momentum. From inspiration to execution you need to keep that energy up and constantly moving forward. Many a great song died from lack of this.

Yes - from a classical music perspective this is what we do too - it is always great to see this in other genres too.

I’ll say it again, one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. You can just tell when people are actually singing and you can tell when they are truly great.

Excellent analysis showing all the little subtle things George did with his voice to convey the story and emotion of the song. And what a beautiful song at that.

Thank you Wings of Pegasus! It is great to see the movement of a natural voice on a vocal line. The world lost a priceless vocal when George Michael passed- rest in peace.

Thank you Fil for another great George analysis. It's great seeing how excited you get by watching and listening to George's incredible talent 💜 There is only 1 George Michael and no one will ever come close 💜
