I had a really good cackle when you said water makers were just a comfort item and you’re correct I just can’t imagine trying to do this without one. I take a fresh water shower daily and while I don’t use much maybe 2.5-3 gallons per shower that is only possible because I have a water maker. I do so admire you old school cruisers though with how far y’all can stretch 30-40 gallons.

thanks for the views of your cruising life and adventures! I guess the "costs" of living your adventurous life are the never-ending little inconveniences, but what I love about the pair of you is your acceptance of that and your very cool way of setting about not just surviving it all, but enjoying life and the struggles as you go! It must be very satisfying to be so self sufficient and, apparently, happy.

It's work and discomfort. A lot of it. Which is unavoidable in life. The question is- where and how and toward what end do you want your life's work and discomfort to come? Not always- but in general- I find boat life and its associated labor to be gratifying. Connected. To the rhythm and whims of nature, sea, wind and tide. To what I need, consume- how little I truly need to be content. To work with my hands, often yielding palpable satisfying rewards and results. To my creativity, problem solving and resilience. When questioned by friends- my response has always been- it's simple, I'd rather haul jugs of water in the dinghy than trash cans to the curb- am happier sanding teak trim on the hook than mowing a lawn in suburbia. No right or wrong- we're all cut from different cloth. I feel more alive, myself worrying about things like how much rode I have out in a blow than meeting a tight deadline at a desk job. Most of all I relish the time and space to... be.

The sexy shiny bin chicken is a Straw Ibis. The plain black and white ones that like eating garbage are Sacred Ibis (sacred in Egypt, Thoth has a sacred ibis head). The other Aussie Ibis is the Glossy Ibis, but it lives down in Tasmania only, it's chocolate brown with shiny iridescent wings. Like most things, they all taste like chicken.

I've seen a guy with a junk rigged ketch and metal hull he built himself .. onboard he had a US navy manual lifeboat desalinizer.. a bit like a giant grease gun . They are cheap and cheap to buy filters for as they are standard to all US Navy small boats as he said there are times when you do get caught out for fresh water..by winds and tides. He later added a large window wiper motor arm to mechanise it as he and his wife were getting bored of lugging water or manual pumping.😂 👍🏻🧙🏻♂️

Dang. Soooooooo, my Yanmar runs great! I was getting held over a barrel at a marina in Jersey for money. I'm sure you know how they do it. It was their responsibility to put it in the water. When I asked them to the owner told me "no! The previous owner owes money! It's $300 a month for dry storage!" I said great! That's cheaper than a slip! See ya later sucker! They dropped the boat and didn't tell me for a week then charged me 90 a day whatever nbd. I went to leave it wouldn't go into forward. The dick removed the cable. I figured out how to shift it in to forward and said "so long sucker!" Made it into the Bay and ran outta fuel lol! Lucky I got enough of a sail up and got it almost home. I'll be bleeding diesel tomorrow. This part of boat life really sucks lol! Got some great sunset pics tho.
