Liveaboard life: minimalism in a tiny home at sea

Teresa Carey lives on her sailboat Daphne with no flush toilet or shower, an icebox for a refrigerator, no television, and few electronics. She doesn't see it as a sacrifice but as an opportunity to live a bigger life unfettered by her possessions.

Thanks so much for the support! People are always so critical of how I could afford to do this.

I really envy the Liveaboards. Hearing the excitement in her voice when she said the dolphins were playing with Daphne made me want for that life even more! I used to live on a large farm in a large house, lost my job and the farm and ended up living in my vehicle in parking lots for 2 years. I now live full time in a 34 foot RV and I absolutely love it. The smaller space, the less stuff I have, the freedom. Someday I'll trade in the RV for a small sailboat.

@@davecopp9356 Never did! But as I've gotten older, I've realized that's okay. I'm still living the small home life in the same 34 foot class A RV I had in my original post 9 years ago. I absolutely don't miss or want a normal home sized sticks and bricks anymore. RV life for me!

I don't know why anyone gives such videos a 'thumbs down'. I guess some just enjoy negativity. This is a sincere share of her personal time and space; that is truly a gift she is sharing here. Thank you for sharing this. I agree with pretty much every word you spoke here and it all made perfect sense, to me. This was an excellent 10 minute clip, and I sincerely hope all who sail can be so happily contented. Good on ya' lady! Cheers!!

I can tell from a lot of the comments on here many of you have never been around the water or boats in general. Maintaining a living while on a boat is not that difficult. Think of it in terms of going on the road and working. In other words, some work the internet, some work 6 mos from their boat on land while docked and then 6 mos at sea. some simply scrape by on what they have saved over the years. Some work in the ports of call they land in. so you see, it's not all that difficult. You have to want it...it's like most things in life. You want it badly enough, you will find a way.

I looked into the liveaboard lifestyle for when I retire. I read everything I could find about it, read all the forums, subscribed to all the sailing magazines, etc. What finally changed my mind was the growing number of reports of marinas no longer allowing liveaboards. You could buy a slip for your boat but could not live on it. I also read that marinas were becoming more and more expensive while traveling. It still is doable but you better at least have a good condition boat already paid for.

I'm on the verge of returning to this lifestyle myself after 15 years of being landlocked , over here in the UK . Whilst I still own the same boat , only a shade bigger than this one at 25' , i've decided to swop it for a slightly larger one , 6' longer at 32' . It's also a twin sticker , but that's an age thing , ya understand , to keep the sail area smaller . At the time , i worked full time , for other reasons , so found myself marina bound , except at the weekend , but even so my rent was the equivalent of 15 pounds sterling a week , afloat in the middle of a major town . I had electric laid on at roughly 4 pounds a week , even with a tv (hah and video) and a landline phone at standard quarterly rates . Water was also on the dock , to keep the water tanks topped up and a really good shower seriously close by , also on the dock . As i sure you can guess those rates are out of date today , but here many people are moving afloat , because the words out , try it , I;m pretty sure you won't regret it , you really don't need all that junk .

Your comments needn't b so aggressive- only friendly inquiry. To answer your question, I have never been given a trust fund or a penny from anyone. I just have jobs. Usually more than one at a time. Congrats on loving your lifestyle, that is the best place to be. I wish for everyone that they could love their unique lifestyle, but unfortunately I don't think many are as fortunate. There is no gold at the bottom of my rainbow - I find joy to be much better. Sincerely, Miss Sunshine (Teresa)

***** Unless you know this person, you have no idea about her financial status. She said she lives on her boat because she couldn't afford to have a boat and another place to live. It may appear to you that she's some rich trust fund kid because she's telling you about her life aboard her sailboat and doesn't mention employment (not that I heard anyway) but she could very well work remotely somehow, who the heck knows. This woman and her simple lifestyle certainly doesn't scream rich. She seems like a very interesting person with an adventurous lifestyle to share. I'll bet she'll have no regrets when she's an old woman and looks back on her life. In case anyone is interested: sailrite.wordpress.com/2014/09/24/teresa-carey-sewing-self-sufficiency-and-icebergs/

Totally funny assumption! I get it. But the Norseman is for our business. We couldn't provide sail-training expeditions on a 27ft boat. There was no room for passengers. We wanted a boat big enough where we could share sailing with others.

***** I don't really see him as a "begrudger" - just someone who made an assumption with limited information. I'm not worried at all. Nor am I offended. I think people really want to find things to "prove me wrong" and so they tend to assume a lot about me, even though they've only seen a short vid. I get it all the time, and I understand. But I do hope that by telling Chicken Soup the truth, then maybe we can learn together from a place of openness rather than just closing it all down. Conversation like this is enriching!....Then again, maybe I'm fooling myself and it is just "begrudgers."

My girlfriend and I bicycled across Europe for six months and our greatest luxury was the freedom to go wherever we wished unencumbered by schedules, a-holes, and stuff. Our "stuff" was the experiences of an adventure surrounded literally -- not virtually -- by nature, ever-changing scenery, and history. As Thornton Wilder put it: "It is only in appearance that time is a river. -- It is rather a vast landscape and it is the eye of the beholder that moves." Hmmmm, don't know if that guy you travel with is your boyfriend but if he isn't then he's a fool. A woman with your fresh outlook is like a rare metal. It's out there, but you have to dig through rock and dirt and sometimes you're on the wrong mountain. If you ever sail past Marina Del Rey, rose petal, stop by and we'll discuss our many adventures over tea and a vegamite sandwich.

So tell us, how do *you* pay for *your* lifestyle? Impertinent personal questions deserve no response. Very few liveaboard sailors are "trust fund babies." They do all sorts of things, from working part time to writing songs and stories and books to sewing sails and doing varnish work and repairing the engines on larger boats. Kirsten's finances are her own business.

Hi Teresa, please don't feel like you've to answer every comment and especially any negative ones. Most are ignorant or can't imagine doing what you are capable of doing, so they try to make an issue. I live aboard, but in a marina and have easy access to everything. Obviously, I don't need to store as much as yourself who live off shore. As far as how you support yourself or your lifestyle, it's nobody's business. I do have a business and it makes money, so I can live however I want.

***** Now I totally agree with you there Circulo. Good comment! When you have the financial base, anything is possible. I speak of this myself from my world travels but never put those down who have not had the chance to do this like me, due to their financial circumstances an otherwise. I have the chances and love travelling. Many are forced to live where they are and like said, if you are born into a poor housing estate, 9 times of of 10, that is where your life shall end. I was born in a slum but had the good fortune to have dual nationality (Swiss and Israeli) and this opened opportunities for me.

A true inspiration. I thought I was living small on a 25' power boat but I am rather sure I couldn't live on what she is on. I have sun deck/dance floor over the inboard engine compartment, running water, toaster oven, microwave, coffee pot (electric) oh and a 2 door refrigerator. A man has to have his ice cream :) She's doing great

Isnt it splendid, that she wants to live withouth all toys and gadgets. She must be a fun human beeing to be around with. It doesnt matter where she getts her money, what matters is, that she lives a simple life while she could do a lot easier with her days as you speak. And you talk rubish...u can get a decent blue water cruiser for less then 15k(catalina 30,C&C27 mk1,2,3,...etc..)

+Klemen Prezelj You can definitely get a blue water cruiser for around 15k, but I wouldn't consider a Catalina 30 a blue water boat. They are way too beamy.

The big mistake many wannabe liveaboards make is buying a boat which is much too big for their needs, Two people can live quite comfortable on a 26 footer and it will not empty your bank account.

over here in the real world, where we can all see what you wrote, as well as calling me a dumb ass for pointing out your stupidity just really serves to illustrate I was correct. If you actually saw her TED talk you'd see that she worked and took out a loan for the boat. You didnt point out an obvious fact, you just leapt in with your dickwad boots on. You sir (i'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but i'm guessing you're about 12), are i suspect a small minded fuckwit who can only feel good about yourself by deriding others. Now Kindly fuck off and take your childish attitude with you. Thanks !

while i love and aspire to your life style, at 4:23 you state that you cat is a vegitarian, this is deeply problematic as cats CANNOT be vegitarians and will eventualy die of malnutriton if they do not get the neccesary nutrients in meats.

+Toby Espenschied I know it's been 6 months but hey: I agree with your concern that cats are naturally carnivores, however she says, "..I don't carry any meat, Daphne's a vegetarian boat". Daphne is the boat's name (2:53), not the cats! Just to clear that up :)

This the present, and future of Western civilization. Indoctrinated youngsters like this girl here, indoctrinated by academia and media, the same ones who keep yapping the word SCIENCE! Quoting Darwin, Sagan and whatnot, whenever it is in their convenience while giving the middle finger to science, when it too is in their convenience to impose their deranged, cultists dogmata. They're totally ok with forcing carnivorous organisms, like felines and human babies, to become vegetarian or vegan. Pathologically insane people we're dealing with here, this girl actually seems like she could be a nice girl, a extreme rarity nowadays since we're dealing with indoctrinated brownshirt youths but indoctrinated nonetheles.

There are cat foods that are vegan that have synthetic nutrients found in meat.

"Pathologically insane people we're dealing with here" - funny. Me, or you? But seriously, Dory eats cat food. Everyone else aboard eats veggies. I'm not perfect, sometimes I misspeak but that doesn't make me pathologically insane either. Good luck to you!
