I see it differently. Music is for everyone. Everyone can pick what they personally like. Starting a discussion about who deserves more attention is silly. Queen has catapulted this concert into the history. Of course the other performances were damn good too. In fact, this one is my favorite. But this performance wouldn't have the attention that has today without the Queen performance either. Thank you Queen, thank you Ultravox.

No, not for his show, but his V O I C E. Yes. And they have even tried to researsch his voice some years ago. Guess what they found out? LIVE AID FACTS: You may of never known. First of all, to clear satellite time and do a live broadcast all over the world at the same time was unheard of and untried in 1985. There were some technical glitches and sometimes the feed was even lost and the time would be filled in by MTV DJ's (MTV aired the broadcast and provided commentators). As far as the missing material of some of the acts it doesn't exist in any recorded form anymore. Bob Geldof asked that the show not be recorded or rebroadcast and the BBC destroyed the tapes at his request. There was no plan to make a concert DVD (there were no DVD's) and sell it after the fact to raise money, which would have been smart. (I had about six hours recorded on VHS tapes, but those vanished over the years) The concert was supposed to raise donations that day and awareness of what was going on in Africa. The only reason that any Wembley footage exists is that some of the tapes were lost and found years later in some dusty corner. Then they had to salvage what they found and use what could be used. MTV recorded the broadcast also but a lot of the footage is with handheld cameras and substandard audio. They supposedly had over 100 hours of various types of footage and also salvaged what they could. The Who are missing half of their set because the BBC had a power outage and it never made it to the air. Led Zeppelin specifically withheld their permission for their material to be used because they didn't like their performance. The rest of the footage is just gone. Musicians were not paid, obviously. The reason you see US bands in London and English bands in Philadelphia is because they were touring at the time and played at the closest venue. Bands are not missing off the DVD because they wanted more money etc. As for the quality the sound has been remastered to 5.1 and actually sounds pretty good for the most part. The video is not always crisp but they did a pretty good job considering they were working with 20 yr old tapes. Its a 4 disc set that's well worth the money. It's a great snapshot of some of the acts that were at the top of their game in the 80's. I remember the video breaks, instruments failing and I do recall that Roger Daltry screwed up the lyrics on one song. When Live Aid began, I knew it was an historical moment and I wanted to record as much as I could. It was only by luck that I learned much of the concert was put onto DVD. I will not be content however, until we get a digital copy. To me, digital is the only thing that guarantees this concert to endure for all time. I loved how they switched back and forth from Wembley to JFK. Sometimes we arrived in the middle of a set during such transfers. I also wish they interviewed each act, to get their take on what was taking place. I am always thinking about the value of the moment, which is why I have recorded conversations with family members in the past, family now gone. Not to many folks think the way I do, as far as saving memories. In my grandmother's own words, she tells me about her childhood and the great depression. It is enjoyable to listen to. My father passed away, but I have him recorded as I told him some jokes. To hear his laughter after his death, some four years ago, is a precious gift. I think the same way about Live Aid. Try to keep in your life all the moments that bring you joy. D

Thanks for the info. That explains why I'm unable to find some of the performances I'm looking for. I had no idea it hadn't been officially recorded for posterity but though there was a huge publicity build up and we all knew that a live concert broadcast of that magnitude had never been attempted before, I don't think many of us were aware that some of the performances that day were 'historical' in every way and that more than thirty years later people would still be astounded by them. My best friend's parents were away for the weekend so half a dozen of us decided to make use of the venue (and their huge TV). On the last minute friends from York and London joined us. It was the last time our whole group was together.

Omg! The master class vocals of Midge Ure!! Astounding!! I watched this on the day of Live Aid back in 85, and have not seen the performance since. Wow!!! I salute you Midge!! The band were amazing too!! No one performs like this any more with this class, this heart and this conviction! Truly beautiful! Thank you Ultravox ♥️🙏

Chris Cross, a co-writer of this music, is in peace now. Yet, we can still see his amazing performances and his beautiful smile. Thanks to Live Aid for bringing everyone together in one place.

Having seen Midge on a couple of his solo performances (just him, his guitar, and a very small venue, maybe 100 people) and he can still belt this out of the park, like he's performing in a stadium. Stunning.

Absolutely brilliant..this is live..the emotion coming from midge ure singing voice is delivered so perfectly..it's not easy for a singer to sound as good live as their sound recording. Midge ure surpasses that.

1:00-1:10: the song's first lung-buster moment and one of the biggest of any song ever... TEN FULL SECONDS, he doesn't stop to take a breath and is belting it out...LIVE, PERFECTLY IN TUNE! And his smile at 1:40; magic. Beyoncé must watch this and go …" ohhhh; THAT'S what a singer is!" I’d never seen this performance but always loved the song from the first time I heard it . Fade to Grey was also Midge’s. From Melbourne, Midge .. thank you .
