i was at disneyland the last day of the skyway in 1994. i was one of the last dozen or so to board it in fantasyland at the end of the day. by then nothing was coming in from tomorrowland but empty buckets. after the last guest was off the ride a single bucket took the last riders on a round trip before it closed forever. the last riders? mickey and minnie mouse. there were about 20 guests hanging around the rides exit to watch as they floated silently away from tomorrowland into the matterhorn. after what seemed like an eternity the bucket reappeared with mickey and minnie waving to us as we cheered. they disembarked, and they skyway was no more. i went back a couple of days later and the towers were already gone. a bittersweet memory for sure.

a little added note: i was there a couple of weeks ago and all that's left of the old fantasyland station are three of the cement steps that led to the chalet. the chalet itself was removed this passed june. the three steps left now lead to a small hillside garden. i imagine they were left because walt disney walked on them.

The Skyway at Disneyland was the first Vonroll 101 skyride built in the US. It's the reason soo many other theme parks ,zoos ,state fairs etc... built them. Sadly many are gone now due to a pair of fatal accidents in the late 1970s. One at Six Flags St. Louis due to riders rocking a car and a bushing in a tower that failed. The other happened at the Texas State Fair in 1979 when four cars piled up on one roller battery on a tower causing it to rotate and two cars to fall due to the dumb operator running it in high winds with known safety systems disabled.

I was real little when it was taken down but I have some exciting thoughts about it. When I saw the movie UP I instantly thought this would be perfect. Take down the old shack and replace it with the house from the film (complete with balloons on top). Guests would hop on a basket that looked like it was supported by a cluster of balloons and sent along a reconstructed skyway path that curved around the mountain. Just seemed like a charming story that the house just found its way to land at Disneyland...

So glad I found your channel! I'm a huge history buff, specifically Disneyland history and it's always fun for me to find the remnants of old attractions whenever I go. I've been obsessed with the skyway for awhile and no one else ever seems to know what it is or that the entire Skyway station (in fantasyland obviously) is still there. So this made me happy, to say the least. Thanks so much for this video, glad to see other people care about all these older attractions :)

My one and only trip to Disneyland was in the late 80s. I'm taking my kids on their first trip next summer and I'm loving your videos! The guy helped us book our trip said that it would be like coming for the first time since it's been so long. My Dad lugged his camera taking video of my sister and I. Mind you, he had one of the first camcorders on the block, almost as big as the commercial jobs today. Part of the video of the trip is on the Skyride and the boat ride that are now closed. Thanks for the video letting us know what happened to them!

I just found your videos today and love them. They way you combine history, facts, and your style of humor made me not even care that what's left of this stuff might hardly be worth filming because I was laughing so hard and learning so much anyway. I was more interested in some of the attractions they have now that you showed because some are featured on just about any and every video about closed/failed Disney attractions. However you showed and talked about ones I've never seen or heard of. If you haven't guessed yet I've never been to Disney land but if I had gotten to as a little girl I would have loved the Little Mermaid one you talked about. I could totally imagine the giant she'll and how it would have been sitting when you showed it old spot, thank you so much. Also your quips about people at the park are harmless and hilarious and might be my favorite parts of each video "Johnny Depp?" "Ersala?" If your intro wasn't so loud and offensive to my ears everything would be perfect.

I worked Disneylands skyway between 1992 and 1993. The best ride in the park. I still can hear the firework at 9:30pm above my head. Tomorrow Land and Fantasyland Skyway. On a busy day, we would have 44 cabins on the line which puts only 7 seconds between cabins entering the station. The man who jumped in 1994 was a stunt man. Great video.

Gosh this brought back SO many memories for me! I remember riding those sky buckets! The guys that used to load & unload people onto them wore white shirts & "lederhosen",(white knee hi socks too!) Once I was in line for ?Mr. Toad's" ride, and a skybucket that passed from above us tossed out those small hard candies & a bunch of people in line (me included) got hit in the head! (ouch!) At night, when they would do the fireworks show, they would make an anouncement, and this lady dressed as "Tinkerbell" flew across on that skybuckets wire w/a magic wand, spotlight shining on her, before the show! It was so magical, and it was the same lady who did that for many years! Thanks for the memories:)

I used to live near Disneyland, and went several times when I was a kid. I rode the "Skyway" many times. The fun thing - at least for a kid - was going through the Matterhorn and seeing the anamatronic "abominable snow man". Last time I've been to the park was 1983 (High School graduation trip), since my parents moved up to Northern CA a few years earlier. I should go again sometime soon, even though it's stupid-expensive...

Wow great video, lots of wonderful memories. But the Sky was actually closed for about two years during Matterhorn Bobsled's construction. Where the Matterhorn is today was large hill called Holiday Hill and on top of was the tallest tower for the Skyway which reached about 150 feet high. Much higher than the 95 foot limit of the former modern Skyway. Walt hated that eyesore of a tower. But it also provided the height of the Matterhorn. In fact he once told his Imagineers that he did not want his mountain taller than "that tower" and that was their height goal. So in late 1957 the Skyway closed. The main tower and Holiday Hill were removed then the Matterhorn was built in its place.

Man.. I with you a 1000% on that one. In my teens, my friend and me when to disneyland. He badgered, challenged, and even called me a called me p88sy if i didn't ride them; well you know how teens take challenge (at least it wasn't a fire challenge, or tide pods.I would never do those I may be stupid but not that stupid.) He liked getting dizzy, but I passionately hated it.. First ride, I was dizzy and sick to my stomach. About an hour later, just as i was started to feel better; be badgered me again and stupid me rode them again. Same thing, dizzy but even more sick this time, we went through the same routine two more times. I was so sick by the 4th time tha as i was just about to vomit in the middle of a crown on main street, I found security officer, told my hi i was about ready to vomit. he very assertively grabs me by the upper arm as if I'm a criminal and rushes me to a restroom, LOL, everyone is looking at me like i just got caught for doing something bad. I didn't recover back to normal until long after I was home. I know I know. why did it keep doing it? He kept badgering me, and after the first time I was so dizzy I wasn't thinking straight. Every consecutive time it cumulatively got worse. Ruined the entire night. I got him back though, but that's for another story. He only had to wear the cast for a month... LOL

I loved the skyway. My grandfather (1896-1980 RIP) took my twice a year to Disneyland for many years back in the 60/70's when i was a kid up until I was about 13. (basically 6yr old to12.) Twice a year (It is an understatement to say I was spoiled and lucky.) Plus, once a year he took me to knotts (he knew the Knots from the berry days - and two we wants to Knott's Calico ghost town. My grandfather was in his mid 60's when he started taking me to Disney. 65 yrs old, I don't know how he kept up with me. Unlike many parents today, when we went on Tom Sawyer's island he would take a break, and let me roam around the island all by myself (you know; old school no hover parenting freedom.) Every visit, we always took the skyway towards the end of the night, and finished the night with the train ride. Being 60 myself now. I give a heartfelt thanks to Walt Disney (for never giving up and creating Disneyland,) to his family members and friends who believed in him and struck by him during the hard times, especially his brother; to all the disney staff and employees over the years who made the experience special by always staying in character; and especially to my grandfather for his generosity, and who let me explore and discover many wonderful experiences in life without being a helicopter parent, but who still provided me with ages old wisdom (and an appreciation for the power of kindness.) . For those of you who read my entire post, thank you for indulging me in my personal story. I wish you all good fortune and the opportunity to do the things that bring happiness to you and yours. Peace.

Came back to DL several years later and was super disappointed to not see it there. So, all those years since the 90s, I had to wonder why they took down one of the coolest rides that went through a ride that I was too scared to ride at that time. :D

Great video Justin! WDW's skyway closed in 1999, and there WAS a death at the MK version. A janitor was sweeping a path in one of the stations one morning before park opening, when a ride operator started the ride not knowing of the janitors presence. Instead of jumping out of the way, he decided to try to jump into the gondola. He didn't make it and left the station clinging to the outside of the gondola for dear life. He travelled a little ways until he lost his grip, and fell 40 ft. to his death. Disney, however, still insists that this incident had nothing to do with the closing of the ride. The official story behind Disney closing the Skyway's in both parks breaks it down into 3 factors. 1) Low capacity 2) Cost of operation (MK had a station midway that required even more CM's for a single attraction) and 3) Cost of keeping dirty roofs clean (which are only visible from the Skyway) all led to the demise of a park favorite. With the development of MK's New Fantasyland, the old Fantasyland Skyway station has been replaced by a forced perspective version of Rapunzels tower on a rocky hill, with restrooms underneath.
@LiveFastDiePoor11 жыл бұрын
That's freaking crazy. No way would I do that. I believe Disney that it didn't lead to closure though. A lot of people have died trying to Swim rivers of America and it's never closed - but Leave it to MK to replace an attraction with a bathroom!

I just watched "Frozen" on dvd and on the extras, the film makers of "Frozen" describe how artwork by Imagineer Marc Davis inspired the movie's designs. In the '50s, Davis was developing a dark ride where guests could go to escape the heat by visiting an "Ice Princess". With the rumors about the skyway building being bulldozed (and the popularity of the film) I wonder if Disneyland is planning on building Elsa's Castle.

I knew Lynn Hart, "Ops 1" for Disneyland. He was in charge of all daily operations at the park. It is true a high school aged individual jumped on a dare and landed in the tree referenced. The reason they removed the skyway ride is Orange County then had a justification to pressure Disneyland to install 2 ADA cars. They would be so big it wasn't plausible to do. Orange county would have fined the park daily until it was done. What was Disneyland's solution...they removed the entire ride in 8 hours during the park's off hours. An amazing engineering feat. They didn't inform the county and waited until they showed up for the inspection. Classic Disney.

Yay I've been waiting for a video on the Skyway! I wish i was around to ride it :( Fantastic video! I never noticed those stairs in Tomorrowland before, probably because i only went to that corner to use the restroom!

There's another weirdo thing right there too, on the way to the restroom alongside the wall of that gift shop is a door about 3 1/2 or 4 feet tall, really bizarre!

LiveFastDiePoor That sounds cool! I'll have to check that out along with the echo spot next time i'm there which will probably be awhile because i live in Florida! I used to go to Disneyland a lot and never noticed the stuff in your videos! Next time i go I'll try to find everything! Great videos, keep up the good work! :)

I was 19 yrs. old in 1970 and went to the skyway for a ride with a friend. We had brought something along to "smoke" and we figured the best place to do it and not get caught was on the skyway. Well we boarded the gondola and the guy helping people get in looked at us and said "Wait until your out in the middle". Me and my friend looked at each other and said how did he know what we were going to do. I hope the people riding the matterhorn enjoyed the aroma as we passed through it.

They have employees throughout every ride in little back coves or dark spots to keep an eye on everyone & everything. Eyes are on you on every ride and not just through cameras. Also you would be surprised at what people can do on small confined spaces.

Nice one! It's too bad they couldn't keep the Skyway around but I guess it was time to go. The animations were a nice touch!

The rumor at Disney World for the Skyway being removed was that an employee was out cleaning the buckets when someone, not knowing he was out there, started the ride and he fell and was either seriously injured or killed. It started on the edge of Fantasy Land/ Frontier Land and went to Tomorrow Land, Ending above the Carousel of Progress. They just recently tore down the ride entrance in Fantasy land and put up a new Tangled themed Bathroom ( which was much needed.) to help with the crowds from the ' New Fantasyland' Because the only bathrooms they had in that area were next to Peter Pan's flight and were always crowded because of how few stalls it had. The Queue for the skyway was used as stroller parking for Its a Small World and Peter Pan's Flight until the remodel. It created a Major bottleneck because of the small walkway from fantasy land to frontier land. Being as it was right next to Haunted Mansion and the parade route, Regulars would avoid that area around 3 ish. But now there is a nice opening to help with the flow of traffic. I'm not sure when they removed the Tomorrow land entrance though. It might still secretly be there for all i know. lol

The Skyway was one of my favorite rides. I remember being puzzled by not seeing the Skyway baskets during my grad night back in 1995. I hadn't heard about it being gone for good at that time. It's amazing how they took down the Skyway and sealed up the holes in the Matterhorn mountain in one night!
