Rocket rods and moving the rockets down to the ground was one of the stupidest things they ever did to Tomorrowland. I was there the day Rocket Rods opened, stood in line for hours starting back almost at the main gate and was never more disappointed in Disney than that day.

I think what made it even worse was there was tons of hype for months in anticipation while they were redesigning Tomorrowland. We were able to visit the park during construction but they had the Rocket Rod tracks covered so you could not see the cars as they were testing, but you could hear the engines and tell they were moving pretty fast. There was pretty much no information on what all the new rides and items were so it was a fun guessing game as to what all the new stuff was and everyone was extremely excited to find out what everything was going to be. And then it opened and the Rocket Rod ride was a horrible disaster that was broken down almost every day and had insanely huge lines. I remember being excited wondering what the heck the replacement for the spinning rocket ride on top of the People Mover station was going to be.... only to find out it wasn't even a ride just a spinning decoration. I really like the brass aesthetics of the new Tomorrowland but the end result was just bad and a big step down.

It's such a tragedy that the Peoplemover is closed in Disneyland. In Disney World, the Peoplemover is my #1 top attraction to go on each and every time. Because of its rich history and behind the scenes view, it's so important to me. I hope that Disney can refurbish and reopen a Peoplemover in Land, as it's such a central part to Walt's vision of EPCOT.

It would be cool if they kept that retro look if they do decide to refurbish the old track. Not too on the nose retro, but that cool mid century version of the future vibe.

They cant. It wont pass osha or ADA. In any case- why bring back a ride that stopped being popular? They turned to Rocket Rods due to declining ridership. And the DL version was expensive to run.

For those of you who've mentioned the TRON tunnel - I didn't include that or the "Super Speed Tunnel" for the sake of time I had to cut it out, it was making the video drag down. But both were basically through the upstairs of "innoventions" once Carousel of Progress and the Progress City model were gone. You can see the TRON part in this great ride through video. Thanks for watching and sharing all your peoplemover stories! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJ-4mIWBfbJ-jbM

I was telling my father about your channel and apparently, Rocket Rods was ONE of the ideas for the People Mover track. My father came up with an idea to make a Tron lightcycle ride to replace the People Mover and bring in Tron Fans. Due to the issues of IP, and Disney's greed, Disneyland settled for Rocket Rods instead. The design of Rocket Rods then led to severe malfunctions on the ride that caused it to be shut down for good. Who knows, maybe my dad will get a callback after many years.

My VIP host told me two interesting things about the people mover last time I was there. First, the track itself is coming down, second, the circle vision screens that remained for the Rocket Rods queue are still intact, right where they left them, behind Buzz attraction, chains and all, for the former lines below. Thank you so much for the video, brought back great memories.

I just wanted to say that I discovered your channel a couple days back, and in one marathon viewing session, I saw all of your videos! As a Disneyland Fanatic, I love your energy and the facts you bring to light are absolutely fascinating! Everytime I see that you release a new Randomland I get super excited, so thank you! Hopefully one day I bump into you at the Magic Kingdom to give you a high five and a hearty handshake! About this though, I was a little young to remember the peoplemover, but I definitely remember the Rocket Rods. I remember having a lot of fun on them, and being super bummed when they closed down only a year or so later. It's always kinda sad seeing those tracks just sit there unused, I hope they find something to co-opt them for soon.

Justin thank you for showcasing & telling the history of my favorite abandoned attraction, and the one that I miss the most in Disneyland! I remember going on the PeopleMover back in the 70's & 80's as a little kid and I loved how it would show you all of Tomorrowland! Since my parents didn't like to get on roller coaster rides like Space Mountain or the Matterhorn back then, we would always get on the PeopleMover and Adventure Thru Inner Space first while in Tomorrowland. I really hope that the Disney Imagineers in Burbank can come up with a newer version of the PeopleMover, like the one in Florida's Magic Kingdom. Which is really awesome and fast when I first got to ride it back in 2012! I love your enthusiasm and many character voices that you use while making Disneyland videos! You always do an amazing job! Thanks again, Justin & hope to see more Disneyland videos from you soon!

I remember ridding this when I was a kid. Feeling relieved after walking all day. It wasn't that fun of a ride but it was relaxing to say the least. I don't think they should bring it back. Just seeing the empty tracks gives it a nice nostalgic look into the history of it all. That and knowing there had been two deaths on the ride in the past is enough to put this ride to rest. Nice video, bro!

"ride envelope" is what caused the ride system to stall out the idea of people mover returning. that means the width of the car must be equal to the distance to the wall. also since ADA requires evac for handicap now, the installation of elevators along the track would be needed. Now some damage was done to the pillars due to the violent movement of Rocket Rods but the reality is the tube tracks, high voltage rails and the massive rotating switch track system ( 100% out of the public's view what so I ever ) are a massive undertaking to remove. Also, the maintenance bay which use to be the Tron Tunnel is an engineering/service wonder but its so intense that this too would take a long time to demo without effecting Innoventions structural design. lastly, P.M. had a rough history! many injuries and a number of fatal events took place which among us Cast members back in the day, the ride was morbidly called "people remover" . So it does have a sad private history to its long period of operation. I have walked those tracks many many times. and even recently and just a few years prior to the new release of star wars, a few Imagineering team members asked to walk the entire track with us. this is where it was told that the idea to make it into a walking exhibit with some sort of space ship sitting atop the old rocket platform as If ready to blast off, was thought about. as for now, the maintenance bay is used for internal fall protection training and equipment as well as audio animatronic team use that area for servicing equipment. another thing to think about is that the tracks are sealed off where the attraction would enter the old circle vision attraction which is now Buzz Lightyear. the tracks still remain but are completely sealed off to meet fire code. one last thing to think about as well is that the old track travelled above what used to be the motor boat attraction. all of that location is now filled up with dirt and would be visible to guests if people mover was reactivated. the attraction also would bring gas extremely close to the service Bay or dry dock for the submarines. and with the revised of the submarines into Finding Nemo, the tunnel that the submarine enters into was a root cause to completely forget about the motorboat Speedway grounds as they were no longer usable. A lot would have to be done to make it accessible and worthwhile. that would include the People Mover track traveling above that location which is now considered a service area rather than an open location for guests to see.

The only way the Disneyland Peoplemover could be brought back is to completely demolish the existing track and superstructure and replace it. Disney simply does not want to put the investment into such a thing, as this would not only cost a ton in demolition, but considering how much of the track weaves in and out of current attractions, it would have a collateral impact on most of the other Tomorrowland attractions as well, as they'd most likely have to shut down for certain amounts of time while the ride was torn down, refurbed, retrofitted, etc. It's a shame, really, that they even decommissioned it in the first place. They took a ride that people loved, and got rid of it.

Strazman, after the completion of Star Wars Land at Disneyland in 2019, in the same above ground platform due to the possibility of people with wheelchairs or mobility scooters, we all know it would not be the new PeopleMover. Instead, it could be the Heathrow Pod Tour, it could be iMover, it could be Boxcar Tour or it could be a new ride with normal speed that is more comfortable than ever before.

This video brought back my memories of riding people mover since I was a young child. However, I do have one memories that you did not mention is that this ride have two stops, one is the main entrance and the other is, what I used to called “the gift shop” where the passenger can be unloaded and loaded according to their will, it used to have stair from the shop level to people mover level. This ride stopped using this 2nd stop during the middle of 70’s. Actually, I miss this experience of entering and leaving the shop place.

I think it would be cool if they made the track into some kind of elevated walking path. It would be a cool sight seeing thing, and it would be easy for them to do. All that would be needed is the old rocket rods track removed and some hand rails put up. That way they could get around the OSHA safety regulations since that technically wouldn't be a ride. Probably wouldn't be as fun as an actual ride, but better than the tracks sitting empty.

Funny story. Mom, Dad and I drove up to Disneyland in the seventies. We lived in Hawthorne, so we went to Disneyland about once a month. Something was different. The sign that said how many guests had been there to date was off for a change. There were only a few people paying to get in, but there was security everywhere. There was only one ticket office open, and there was a new car sitting by the entrance. Dad fiddled with his wallet, as security stared at us, and chattered on their radios. A single, Asian man walked up behind us, and dad waved him ahead. The man walked up to the ticket booth, and security mobbed him. They led him toward the new car, and he started yelling nervously in a foreign language. A videographer ran out and started filming, as the security officers talked on their radios asking for a translator. As they stuffed the guy into the driver's seat of the car, he started crying, and they shoved the camera in his face. He won the car for being the some-number-of-millionth visitor. Dad would have won the car if he hadn't waved the guy ahead.

I was working at the Main Gate of Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA when this same event came up. We knew how many guests came into the park each day but we didn't really have a way to know exactly which guest was number one million. We could have done like Disney did and shut down all but one lane but we didn't. The General Manager of the park kind of just eye balled it. He picked a woman in her late 40's that was there with her family and said, "She is the one. The one millionth guest." I just rolled my eyes thinking what a scam. He didn't know if she was really. She was close but not dead on it. They didn't give her a car. They gave her and her family free entry, free food and drink, and a park attendant to stay with them all day to skip all the lines they wanted. And they gave her a cheesy one millionth guest hat to wear. I remember when August Busch III and his son came to the park. They treated us like we were trash. Didn't speak to us. Didn't want anything to do with us. They were rich and powerful and wanted everyone to know it. They were above us. I know they got paid millions from the InBev takeover but I am glad they have no control over A-B or Busch Entertainment anymore. Sorry family right there!

1FatHappyBirthday Great series on Disneyland being built. Disney had no idea that the park would be so permanent, I don't think. He was used to building movie sets. A lot of it is in 360p. I think digital video is only now getting good enough to be worth archiving good historical footage from film to digital.

Good Job showing the old people mover, I'm in a wheelchair and my folks used to carry me on the ride as a kid. When I went to WDW in the late 80's I thought they would have it accessible but nope and I've been back many other times they do have an elevator but the still have no way of loading a wheelchair onto it. It the only ride I don't think the can modify unless it will be come like the Monorail where it will transport you to another land.

I remember being on the People movers and the Rocket pods when I was a kid. I still wish they did something with that track.. So many memories so little time. Thank you for the little piece of history. I always enjoy your videos of Disneyland (the park I treasure most and I've been to Hersheypark, Knott's Berry Farm, Six Flags, Universal studios in hollywierd).

What! I didn't even know they removed this ride. This was one of those fun ones to let you relax and just observe because it felt like you were doing something because you moved- like Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion. I guess it's been a while.

Great videos and very interesting. Keep em coming please! PS: just a little thought: did anyone ever approach you and mistake you for actor Shia Labeouf? The resemblance is good enough to fool me for a good 2 to 3 seconds!

I have been hooked on Randomland! You really know and are talented with history in a fun entertaining and wholesome way, I can watch your videos with my 10 year old little Brother and still be laughing on the floor being 20 myself and learn new entertaining new things...I was really excited when I saw that this was about the people mover! I have a request that you may do a video about the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror while at WDW and maybe even take a ganter over into DCA...Keep it up your are great and I appreciate your passion for both Disney and random history!

so at 2:40 you say that the people are on a rotating platform so it never stops. for people today an example of that would be at the Grizzly River Run where the rafts are always in motion. That makes sense right?

I have to say that i LOVE your vlogs on Disneyland- I have only been there twice, but I have been to WDW and EPCOT well over 30 times in my life, which is something, considering i'm all the way up in CT. the People Mover is one of my favorite "gotta ride" attractions. One of the times we rode through Space Mountain at WDW, they happened to be working on it, and we got to see the inside of the coaster with the lights all on! It was amazing and i always think of that. Also, per this episode, i'm guessing the Carousel of Progress is no longer there in Disneyland which makes me sad. It's one of the many attractions my father loved most when he went to the NY World's Fair (which i love that you added in)- it was his love of Disney's amazing creations for the World Fair that made it even more special for us to go to The Magic Kingdom- our first trip was actually when EPCOT opened in 1981- my father was in the press (radio) and we got to go to the parks for free. It's still one of my favorite memories. Thanks for posting these videos- it's the best thing I can get until the next time we go to DisneyWorld.

Love riding the peoplemover at Walt Disney World - good way to cool off and get away from the lines. However, the Disneyland peoplemover sounds like more fun - not a straight even track like WDW. Another great video!

The Rocket Rods were awesome and the que was a tribute to all the old Tomorrowland rides. It kept breaking down so it took forever to get in, but once on, it was crazy fast (in spots). Did you know the old People Mover killed or maimed more people than any other ride? Check it out!

i miss the Peoplemover oh so much. I had an annual pass in the 90s and would ride it to survey the line situation in Tomorrowland (no websites, app, or hub info booth in those days). I was so excited to ride the Florida version but it wasn't quite the same. I remember it being called the WED Way when I was a kid. Then it became the Tomorrowland Transit Authority (TTA). Now it's called the Peoplemover but it's definitely not the same as the Disneyland version.
