Liverpool beat QPR 4-0 at Anfield with goals by Craig Johnston, John Aldridge and two from John Barnes - poetry in motion.

It cost £67 for a Kop season ticket back then and I was privileged to be there that day. After watching Rush and Dalglish bang the goals in for years, it actually got a bit repetitive. But when we signed Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge and Houghton, it added a new dimension to the team and for me, this lot was the most exciting Liverpool team of that era

Robert C Lynch I was there that day too and I agree with you; Rush and Kenny were incredible but Barnes, Beardsley, Aldo and all really created such excitement that they were the best team of a fantastic era. It was a privilege to watch them.

I remember in autumn 1987, Liverpool bought Ray Houghton and I was thinking why have they bought him, they have Craig Johnson. He made his debut coming off the bench around October time and I immediately went, ah, that's why they bought him! Houghton became my favourite Liverpool player, along with John Barnes.

I started going to Anfield at the beginning of the 87/88 season, and was stood on the Kop that day. Think it cost £3 at the gate. Great times. Amazing team. I was able to get a season ticket in the paddock for the following season :)

If John Barnes had been in today's Liverpool squad, those 2 Spanish clubs clubs have put a bid of more than 200 million pounds for him.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player move like Barnes did (before he got fat!). The way he beat two men for his second goal was so natural; never even broke stride.

He lost his pace when he had Achilles’ tendon injuries

The way he'd already decided to beat the second man was outrageously good. Changed direction in mid air

Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge remind me a bit of Salah, Firmino and Mane. Hope we win the title almost 29 years after those greats won it in 1990.

I've watched a few of these eighties Liverpool games. Steve McMahon was better than i remember and Ronnie Whelan. Really consistent good passing.

Back then, it was easy to take things for granted. But now we can reflect on 30 years of mediocre players and appreciate what we had during the seventies and eighties - and what we have now!

When Ronnie Whelan was Southend player manager I went to watch Grimsby play at Southend and his legs had gone by then but he was still spraying 30-40 yard passes all game like it was no effort at all. Superb to watch even though the game ended in a boring 0-0.

on the last goal, note how Beardsley made a run around the back/left, which drew the second defender momentarily away from Barnes. That's just how Dalglish always did it. Those are the things that the very best teams/players always do.

This team was utterly excellent. Shame the double was not won even once. So close over the 4/5 years this cycle ran....
@DaveWallerLFC Жыл бұрын
A lot of the team was the same as the one that won the double in 1985/86, but I agree that the Barnes/Beardsley team deserved a double too (and came close 3 times).

Barnes was a footballing hero of mine. I learned so much in my game, watching him play as a kid for Liverpool. One of my school mates used to say "you play like John Barnes" lol. But Beardlsey was another I learned from. The two were a deadly combination. It was just a shame how it all needlessly ended in 1991. Liverpool started that season really well but it went seriously downhill at the turn of the year when Beardsley forced a move and Dalgliesh left. That was the beginning of long, dark times for Liverpool.
@DaveWallerLFC Жыл бұрын
Beardsley didn't force a move, he was sold to Everton by Souness against his will in the summer of 1991.
@Dead-Ball-Situation Жыл бұрын
@@DaveWallerLFC Oh Ok. I thought he fell out with Dalglish.
@DaveWallerLFC Жыл бұрын
There were rumours of that, but I've never seen any suggestion that he forced a move. And it would make no sense to have left in August 1991 because he fell out with the man who resigned in February 1991.

Yes and Jim Smith (RIP after today's sad news) the then manager of QPR commented after the game how they were top equal because they had the same number of points. Not withstanding a far inferior goal difference and having played 2 games more.

I don't think it was about figuring out a way to play against the system. Liverpool just had better players, as proved over the season. No disgrace in losing to that Liverpool side, which was one of the best in the club's history.

Salah doesn’t make it Barnes is the only one who makes the best players, he is untouchable, if the English football managers knew anything the England team should have been built around Barnes, it wasn’t because of racism. Now I’m sick and tired about how black people have been treated so unfairly, but John Barnes was clearly the top footballer in the world, and the team should have been built around him,such a great player. The footballing hierarchy couldn’t accept the fact that Barnes was clearly the best,and John is such a gentlemen that he accepted all that was thrown his way.
