I hope you appreciate that Change ringing bells like these are not meant to be rung this way, and for them to be rung is this manor for the sake of this song took a lot of effort. These bells are the heaviest and largest set of Change ringing bells in the world, and make a lot of noise and the bells hum to a vast extent. The tower is far to big for the bells to be listened to comfortably, and the echo reflects off the walls for a long time after the bell is struck.

Despite the sonic shortcomings, I think it sounds just great. And a huge amount of effort on the part of the bell ringers.. superb!

This was a wonderful act of the Cathedral! I appreciate this, it's truly an act creating understanding beyond christianity and religion - just like the song.

I've been to this Catherdral cemetry yard many of times. The size of the cathedral is stunning. I've heard they're planning to build a bridge spanning over the cemetry next to it.

Thanks for posting this, Ianart. Such a beautiful tribute to a great man and native son. I had planned to go up from London to hear the bells along with these folks, but wasn't feeling well. I've been there, and it's a magnificant cathedral along with the Metro Cathedral.

Some comments seem to be under the impression that the bells are being rung "full circle". In fact they are being chimed, a very much easier process for sounding tunes on bells.
@q100010114 жыл бұрын
Excellent! Yes, you definitely have to do a little imagining to make out the song, but it's there.

Just because they're in a church doesn't mean the songs off limits.
@neil932714 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you're right. I don't think any bell-ringers would have been able to make it sound good - it was just not possible. You would just have to "imagine" what it would sound like, to sound good.

I am a atheist (not the hatefull type). Yet I like the church bells ringing but my mate who a Christian hates them life is full of surprises
@quwers13 жыл бұрын
@themeecer Bell ringing is not a religious thing, it just happens that bells are put in a church.
@pretorium15 жыл бұрын
The real reason for playing the song on the bells was to start off the Alder Hey Childrens Hospital 'Imagine' event held in the cathedral. See the website.....Mr. Buddy

What is ellacombe chime
@moncky20009 жыл бұрын
This is not the bells being full circle rung. It is the ellacombe chime on 10 of the bells
@jasonburnet91818 жыл бұрын
+moncky2000 No. They have tied the ropes to the clappers. The ellacombe chiming mechanism was broken at this time.

I doubt it, there's only 13 bells I think, sounded like there's a few notes missing but still very recognisable

yes I beleve there was a problem with one of the bells so they had to improvise. Still a good effort
@135246a15 жыл бұрын
Well, I thought that was pretty damn impressive! And I'd also like to point out that Christians are often a minority amongst bellringers, so if you don't like the sound of the bells it's only fair to blame atheists too.
@ponce8614 жыл бұрын
it's very strange for a catholic man to see in this church a bar and then to see the bell to sing Imagine.... It's impossible to think Pope that plays with his bell song like master of puppets :)
@IanJackson15 жыл бұрын
hmm, maybe you need a bit of IMAGINATION
@Pelicanus8813 жыл бұрын
@quwers It quite clearly is a religious thing; do you honestly think that churches "just happen" to put bells up for your own personal enjoyment. More fool you if you are enhancing Christian worship and giving glory to God without realising it. And thank you for so doing, of course.
@mancltymagics113 жыл бұрын

If you bothered to find out how difficult it is to do something like that on tower bells you wouldn't be saying that! Your ear just isn't developed enough to appreciate it.
@AthitJohnson10 жыл бұрын
very funny... if you remember that he said no hell and no haven and no religion ha ha ha ha
@Davidwaters-15 жыл бұрын
Yes some parts sounded ok but with notes missing it seems a bit of a non starter with a lot of hype.

"imagine there's no countries, it isn't hard to do. nothing to kill or die for. and no religions to. (...) imagine no possessions." this is anarchism. nothing to do with anglicanism. get it?

Well thank you Mr. Buddy for your more-than-unhelpful critique of the whole thing..... try verse 3: Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world If it sounds like shit then I suggest you see an ENT surgeon & get your ears sorted out. This wasn't for you to have a pop at Christians. Maybe the world would be a better place if people like you kept their big gob shut.
@matthewjeffery64812 жыл бұрын
But then John Lennon also said “I am the eggman, I am the walrus, goo-goo-ga-joob”, so I take his “words of wisdom” with a very large pinch of salt
@emanuelelonardi6441 Жыл бұрын
Why play, with church bells, a Song that invites you to imagine a world without religion? a world without heaven and hell? that's disgusting nonsense!
@neil932715 жыл бұрын
While it sounds like a great idea, and was certainly a skillful performance by the bell ringers, it totally fails. It sounds awful. Though John would have appreciated the effort I'm certain.

I think they seriously need to redesign the whole bell thing because it sounds absolutely pathetic! Look, we're not exactly living in the Bronze Age anymore where stinking bells were cutting-edge technology. And convert the churches into something useful to humankind while they're at it.
@adamm26935 жыл бұрын
The bells are nice, the tower is the problem! You see, it's a massive tower and it's concrete inside, meaning the acoustics are quite crap. Any ring of bells, no matter how good, are going to have a hard time being clearly heard in the tower.
