QPR fan. Can confirm that everyone absolutely knew who was the guv'nor on the park when LFC were playing back in the day. Legend to all of us who grew up then and loved the game. There were plenty of other hard men but Tommy was the Don, end of.

He had a lovely little dribble too , he would be sent off every other week under current rules , but unless i am mistaken was only sent off twice in his career(for lpool) and one of those was for bad language away at man city , not even for a foul . never broke anyones' leg either ! salute smiffy

I never missed a game in the mid 60s to mid 70s I also saw a number of matches before then as a boy in the boys pen. One of the highlights I used to look forward to each season was Tommy playing against a fast winger called Leyton James who played for Burnley and QPR. Tommy would have him in his back pocket and you could see James was s**t scared of him. James would jump in the air and out of the way as soon as Tommy came towards him, Very funny to watch esp at Anfield. What a palyer what a club servant.

It's true that Tommy's footballing skill is often forgotten, but never by Liverpool supporters. Also forgotten is the fact that as a youngster he was an excellent striker. A great passer of the ball, good in the air and a tremendous shot with BOTH feet.

Tommy Smith was known for his sharp tongue during games, often seen berating and even trying to instruct the referee in command. That said, he certainly had the respect of his peers, with fellow "hard man" Jack Charlton once saying "Tommy Smith was easily the hardest player I faced. I ran into him once and he knocked every ounce of breath out of me. I tried to get up and look like he hadn't hurt me, but he had."

Tommy was as tough as Steel. Mentally he was stronger. The 'Division' was a much more violent place then so comparisons to todays Premier League are unrealistic! The only thing I can think of that Tommy Lawrance would have to do is lose some weight. Cardiovascular is essential in today's Premier League. Sports medicine has also come a long way. Tommy will forever be a part of Liverpool Lore as a Hero! RIP Tommy Smith! You were something!

I watched liverpool through the 60s 70s 80s at Anfield and many an away game. I used to love Tommy playing against tricky wingers. I especially like to see Layton James come up against Tommy. James was a fast tricky winger and I have seen James jump 6'up in the air as Tommy slid in to tackle him. That was one of the funniest duels I ever saw and looked forward to seeing. James played for Burnley and QPS we used to call players like him with no bottle sh#t house players as they had no stomach for a confrontation. Smith would have James in his pocket and I am sure he would nod and wink at James before the kick off just to let him know who is boss and Tommy certainly was.
