Offices in the financial district may be quite important to the functioning of society.

@@danh5637 HSBC has moved out of the canary wharf building and into a smaller one because of remote working. The old HSBC building is turned into apartments and shops in the sky.

@@Cartoonman154 but the city is for a different type of financial services to Canary Wharf. You probably could do quant work from home. But it’s unlikely as you need proximity to the exchanges for HFT.

Terrible idea. They've not listened to those of us who complained at all

Did you think to also talk to any of the groups who raised concerns with the previous design to see if any of it was actually addressed? Because all this seems like a very minor tweak and a lot of the big problems are still there. That might be a little more responsible than just parroting the people behind the scheme like last time.

Why would or should it be anybody elses concern?

@danh5637 Because it's a major public building and a heritage asset, not your garage.

@@confusionroundabout1840 it’s ugly and unfit for purpose any longer. Just because something is old doesn’t automatically mean it’s good.

@@danh5637 The fact that it is historically significant means the people who protect our heritage have a say. The fact that it is a major rail termini means passages have a say. Regardless of individual opinions, more opinions count than the people who want to profit off of building on top of it.

@ it’s not historically significant. It’s not architecturally important in any way. It’s not a grand central station. It’s essentially a glorified awning. And just because it’s a rail terminal does not confer property rights to the public. And as for people that “project our heritage” it’s mostly a racket where they extort the owners to remove their objections. Much the same with planing in general, it’s a racket.

The Victorian architecture, especially those eye-sore brick walls (see 1.02) are absolutely vile. The Victorian Meccano set over the platforms is not much better. Sweep it away and start again.

Having looked at train stations in China and much of Asia recently. We’re definitely being held back by arcane traditions.
