The full 90 minutes of the FA Cup Third Round match between Liverpool and Newcastle United at Anfield in January 1984. I believe this was the first FA Cup match - other than the final - to be shown live on TV in the UK. The match was played on a Friday night, which was the BBC's time-slot for live matches for 1983/84.
Thanks to distantvoices for this video.

I was at this match. Great game, really enjoyed it. Always liked the Geordie fans but my biggest memory from this one was that after the match, while waiting for the bus, a bunch of geordies drove past us in a van throwing bricks at us. They didn’t throw well luckily and we lived to tell the tale. This video, all these years later, definitely brought it all back... Thanks Dave. Love these videos...

1:36:35 This is the moment where Keegan was outclassed by Lawrenson and (according to his autobiography) he decided to retire at the end of that season.

Keegan was finished as a top player by this time. He went back to Newcastle to help them get promoted.

They were mad that night. If I remember rightly a few young reds ran on to celebrate and grown men got on from there end and stated on them then other Liverpool fans ran on to help and it kicked off. I remember a mad Geordie dressed in a Newcastle to kilt and a mask on his face screaming in my face as I walked out of a shop.. 💩 Myself. 😂

Newcastle always took a big away following back then. I remember the game between us and Newcastle at Old Trafford in September 1984. Live Sunday game on television. We beat them 5-0 but they brought thousands down to Manchester. Filled the whole of the scoreboard paddock and even round the corner past the scoreboard.

Great fans the Geordies was always hoping they win the title in 96 but good old Roy Evans who always love to help united in the title race at the time

We were still (just about) in the title race in 1996 when we beat Newcastle 4-3, so I don't think that's fair. Although I did want Blackburn to win at Anfield in 1995 (which I'm slightly embarrassed about now), and the perfomance that day was a lot better than in the couple of terrible away games the week before, so I know where you're coming from. On the Geordie fans, it always seems a bit of a mixed bag to me. Some are great (emotional scenes in 1994 when they came to Anfield the day after the Hillsborough anniversary and a fan came on the pitch before the game to place a wreath), but there is another side (coins getting thrown at Neal and Grobbelaar here, homophobic abuse at Lee, and songs about Liverpool slums that have continued since then).

Dave Waller Well to be honest I thought Roy was a bit of a failure as a manager had a lot of talent in the squad but didn’t have the discipline all the strength of character to see it through if you read the book by John Barnes and a few of the other players the discipline was the issue the team never achieved its potential also in 96 picking Jamie Redknapp ahead Michael Thomas in the FA Cup final was a mistake and leaving Neil Ruddock out of the starting lineup was another one yes we was always in the hunt until the last couple of months then it would all fall to pieces On the Newcastle fans good and bad at the time with everyone I remember being in the kop 1990 against Aston Villa One of my cousins was eight years old had a Villa scarf on and was spat on Probably the only time I was disappointed with how some of the fans behaved I also went in the Holte end a lot of Villa Park as my dad was a villa supporter against Liverpool always wore my Liverpool jacket and was still quite young at the time never any trouble

I think Roy Evans did well up to a point. There was a big improvement from 94/95 onwards compared to the 3 seasons before that, which were really bad, but the team never fulfilled its potential to win the league. Some of the responsibility for that is with the players, but the manager is ultimately responsible. If he'd been there a bit later, the regular top-4 finishes might have been seen as more of a success, but at that point we still expected to be winning the league. I agree on the good/bad at all clubs.

I thought Robinson should have played a lot more for Liverpool. Why didn’t he?? Injuries, being in competition with Dalglish for the shirt??
@DaveWallerLFC
@DaveWallerLFC 2 жыл бұрын
He was in the team for most of the first half of the season, only losing his place when he got injured. He then got back in when Dalglish was injured, but didn't really get another look-in after Kenny was fit. The following season Paul Walsh was signed, so he dropped down the pecking order before leaving.

This is a bit before my time in terms of going to matches, so I don't have a first-hand opinion. I think Walsh was a more exciting player, and more popular with the fans, so it probably felt like a reasonable move. Robonson seems to have been a bit like David Hodgson, who signed a year earlier. He did well enough in a good team without ever fully establishing himself, and maybe Walsh was a bit the same. If we'd got Michael Laudrup in the summer of 1983 it might have been different. (To quote Bob Paisley, talking about the possibility of keeping Keegan and buying Dalglish - "who knows, we might have won something!")

Dave. When Lawrenson catches up with Keegan having gave him a 5 yard start (80 minutes) I believe that made Kevin's mind up that first division football was not going to be for him the next season. Does that ring a bell with you?

I still think he would have been very good in the first division the following season. He was such a good player that he didn’t have to rely on pace at that point.

How do you guys think Chris Waddle would’ve done in a red shirt
@DaveWallerLFC
@DaveWallerLFC 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen enough to be certain, but I think he might not have had the tactical discipline to fit in at Liverpool. No doubting his ability going forward, but even talented players like Barnes and Beardsley were expected to track back and help out. Not sure that was part of Waddle's game, but I might be wrong, or he might have done it if asked.

He looked better when he played in Europe like Glenn Hoddle because the game is played at a slower pace. He was a sensation at Marseille.

I always thought Beardsley was a better player than Waddle. That’s only my opinion though. I loved the little jink he would do to beat a player. I thought he was discarded too early by Liverpool.
