Livestock guard dogs go from play to work in seconds

While these Maremma/Great Pyrenees dogs tumble and play in the snow, one of them hears something at the other end of the field. In an instant all 3 dogs spring into action, ready to go to work. This is excellent livestock guard dog behavior; Fingal and King are out on point while Maple hangs back to protect the livestock (in this case it's their owner who is filming). We're not sure what it was they went after, but they sure know how to flip the switch!

As an Australian travelling through Paris, I was sitting in a café when a Gendarme (Police) with his Canine partner entered the café. the Gendarme approached the counter, the Alsatian (can't call him a German Shepherd in Paris!) sat down obediently next to him, staring at him intently. He glanced down and said "Jouer" (play) and the dog ran up to everyone and sniffed them playfully, looking at everyone, and generally had a great time. The Gendarme sipped his coffee, downed the last drops, and said "Travailler" (work) and the dog sprang to attention, ran and sat by his side, staring intently at him again. The Gendarme TRIED to pay his bill, but the shopkeeper was offended, and refused to accept his money. The Gendarme and his partner said goodbye to all in the café and walked out. The INSTANT and INTENSE work ethic of this four-legged Police Officer was a treat to see.

@sopwithpuppy
@sopwithpuppy Ай бұрын
@@jarnodatema It depends on your Nationality. Another name for the German Shepherd breed is Alsatians. This term comes from Alsace-Lorraine, a North East region of France on the border with Germany. It was ceded to Germany after the Franco-Prussian war of 1871, and was returned to France after WW1. Germans call the breed German Shepherds, French call them Alsatians.

@@ithewho6603 I´m sure there are many stories like that with shepherd dogs. :) One of mine: when I was a boy, we had a collie, who followed me everywhere as I was playing around the house and garden. Mostly just watching me. Once I was playing by the nearby creek and in the end I managed to slip and fall into the water. Nothing dramatic, the creek was very shallow. I got a little wet, but would probably continue playing. But the dog wouldn´t have it - she grabbed me by the sleeve immediately, dragged me away from the creek and eventually persuaded me to go into the house. Only when I came back out again - changed into dry clothes - did the dog settle down. :)

@@brentbeacham9691 I agree, except I don’t like the way humans treat them. Not just the dog fights. I really don’t like how they have been bred with massive flaws, like pugs. I think that is cruel. Also cooping them up in apartments, making them go insane. When they should be running out in a forest. Even using them as bomb sniffers and K-9 units is cruel. They have become like little slaves. Humans are cruel without being aware of it. 2 doggies, wipe open spaces or giving them the chance to go on adventures. Giving them a good and happy life is what an owner should be. 🥰 and no sausage doggies or pugsies anymore 👀 so frustrating.

@@randyross5630 Get a couple of mules. Dogs will help, also, but the mules and dogs need to be trained to get along. As a teen, I went out to Grandpa's mule pen one morning. And discovered Sally had gifted me four nice, marketable Coyote pelts. Wolverines? I unno. Against one mule, for sure, dead mule. Against 3-4? Wolverine would probably still win, but would also be very likely to say, "Not worth." Mustelid will be mustelid. Black Bears tend to be timid enough, that they figure anything that stands up to them might know something they don't. The key words in there are, Tend to... The more they're outnumbered, the more timid they tend to be. Which is often a good practice! Also, mules graze, and dogs need chow. And flea meds. And deworming. And vets, more often than mule. (You can also hitch a plow to a mule!) Still, if you could teach 2-3 dogs and 2-3 mules to tag-team, that might be a Sight.

ROFL. Do educate yourself. They are *****NOT***** "Golden Pyrenees" which is a mix of Golden Retriever and the Great Pyrenees. These are 100% livestock guardian dogs - crossbred. Livestock guardian dogs are wasted in household & similar settings as they are bred to be independent or to be exact indifferent to owners as ALL livestock guardian dogs are. Livestock guardian dogs that are chasing people off the property are ****NOT*** properly trained and usually just ill mannered aggressive mutts (like yours). A PROPERLY TRAINED livestock guardian dog will actually leave people be as long as they are not messing with what the dog is guardian.

I hike on a trail that goes by a farm. Three GPs come over and bark at me. They don't act like they want to kill me. They just want me to know they are on the job. My dog had to bark back at them. Maybe they considered my dog a threat. One time I saw the farmer, but no dogs. I told her they were doing a good job.

@ŧώїżđэđ ľїŏή Through looking up guard dogs over the past year, I have found that different breeds react differently. The one that stays behind looks different than the other two. Depending on the breed, there are some that will charge out to the threat, as the pair did, then, there are breeds that will stay close to the area that needs protection. Looks like this person had both types, in my opinion, smart move.

This is how theyre supposed to work. Its why you should have more than one LGD because they have been bred to work together. Two go to run off the predator while one stays to guard the flock or herd. Wolves have been known to try and lure away guardians and circle back to kill. This is awesome instinct actually 👍🏻 If there were 5-6, still only one or two is likely to stay back while the rest go. Its cool to watch.

the one dog stayed to protect the camera man. his barking to the two other dogs was 1. to let them know that he was staying behind 2. if they need him he would be there asap. great pack, smart, the dog who stayed behind actually seemed to think that through with slight struggle to make the right decision, he wanted to go no doubt, if the camera man wasn't there he would have went and more than likely lead that pack. the two that took off, both hauling ass at the same speed, side by side, totally silent so they could hear what #3's plan was.. awesome video, your live stock and family are in great paws! =)

It's all speculation, honestly. Certain barks do mean certain generalized things, but if there are specific messages behind them, we don't know. To me I could argue that the dog staying back is barking to let the predators know that there's backup if needed, not telling the other dogs he's staying back to protect the human, but no human knows the true meaning behind them.

It's a natural behavior with Livestock Guardians when they're in a pack. They allocate tasks, some, usually the faster (in my experience, younger) dogs will go charging ahead to be a first line of defense and try to either scare the predator away or engage it. Others will naturally stay closer to the flock as a more defensive line in case any predators are smart enough to get past the more aggressive dogs.
@filmtajm35

Zev Benjamin Cool. But I wonder how they decide who is doing what? What is the alpha dog doing? Give orders or what and how? I tried to check on Internet for more information, but it was hard to find. Perhaps I do not ask the right question? Anyway, I would love to hear a answer from a "dog expert". And also some commenters below mentioned the behaviour in the video clip above, alerted their dogs. Is that possible and how? Dog language?
@shade419
@shade419 6 жыл бұрын
How they decide who does what is more about personality and temperament than orders from the Alpha. The more aggressive or assertive a dog is, the more likely it is to take that more front-line approach. Quieter, more nurturing or low-energy dogs are going to stay back to keep their eyes on the flock. As for what the alpha dog, that one who is staying back is doing? Those barks serve as signals to predators and to other members of the guard pack that "Hey! There's danger, there's something here that we need to react to, playtime is over." That's signaled through volume and pitch of the bark, which is why people's dogs would react to the sound. They hear the pitch of the bark and that tells them exactly what its supposed to, something is up and they have to pay attention and start keeping their eyes and ears open because there could be danger.

They are real good around all livestock, even small guys like ducks and chickens, and little kids too. They like big spaces , but will do ok on smaller properties . A lot of them are nocturnal as hell though . We had one that worked the back side of the clock. He definitely had night watch , which was ok because we had two other dogs that pulled the day shift . You won’t have coyote or wolf problems with them around . Plott hounds are good farm dogs too , they are fearless as well .

I have a female Pyrenees from a breeder, with her puppyhood being spent entirely on the farm, with working parents, when my two previous Pyrenees were from pet shops. I guess they weren't produced from working lines like that. She's very gentle, but also intense in a way neither of her two predecessors were. I mean, it's hard to imagine her taking on a predator like a coyote, but I guess she can be a little hardcore when she wants to.
