I’m an Oklahoman who grew up on the Arkansas River, but now lives up river, on the other side of the damn, and higher in elevation. My mama had to evacuate the last major flood that made national news to our house. The levy was leaking near her neighborhood. Lifelong friend’s houses were completely submerged. Still, it never looked anything like this. The amount of water with the rate of flow had to have been overwhelming and staggering. This is awful, and will take a long time to recover from. I’m so sorry.

The erosion is so bad, because the water was intentionally diverted into McCook lake. They did not want the floodwaters to go into the Dakota Dunes area which consists of million dollar homes and businesses. McCook lake residents were the fall guys. Dakota dunes is in a known floodplain. McCook Lake residents were told to remove their flood insurance due to the fact that they would never be flooded and were not in a floodplain. This was just last year. This is devious and disgusting.

Looking at Google Earth, it looks like this neighborhood was build along an isolated oxbow of the river (‘the lake’). Which itself shows the river historically meanders back and forth over the floodplain (breaking out of its current banks, forming new ones). These folks apparently were caught in a massive meander from the flood flow.

Is the oxbow from the Missouri? Isn't it the Big Sioux that is the supply of the flooding in North Sioux City? The Missouri isn't as high as it was in '19 is it? McCook faired well in that flood if memory serves. I don't know how true it is, but I was told they diverted water from the Big Sioux north of North Sioux City and the outflow of that diversion was upstream of McCook or at McCook. If that is true, this is a man-made incident not natural.

The horrible thing is - the state declared the area to no longer be in the flood plane a few years ago so the homes no longer had flood insurance. The state knew that and purposely flooded the area anyway to save a different area.

No houses should be allowed near rivers or wetlands or the low areas that will flood naturally at some point during heavy rain years. . People need to respect that part of the natural world. If they choose otherwise, they get what these pictures show. It might only happen once in a century, but at some point, it will happen. People like to put faith in manmade stuff, such as levees and dams too. That can lead to devastation as well.

Don't mean to sound insensitive but this is what rivers do in flood plains, it is how all that fertile bottom land is created that people love to live on and farm. When people constrict the flow of the rivers, sooner or later the water finds a way. Nature always has the last word.

In Iowa and South Dakota there has been no response by the governors or federal governments. Minnesota has a ton of both. We have all seen how we were recently told by a former president that he wouldn't help states that had governors that weren't from his "party." So, apparently Biden is playing that game, too. But why didn't the republican governors help the states where they're CURRENTLY THE GOVERNOR?

Those who believe in climate change and expect government to control the weather - you have to be kidding! I was born in the state of South Dakota. The major dams were built to control flooding. Use google earth to see the massive dams that were built in the 1950's to hold that monster river back. Several factors contribute to flooding. One factor is our brilliant government decided we needed ethanol to be added to gasoline. So millions of acres of virgin prairie was replaced with corn. The virgin prairies were mother nature's sponges and absorbed water. what developed after our government did this is lakes developed throughout the state where in past there were none. Near my home town they had to rebuilt the highway three times to get it above the water. This was a US Highway. Flooding is nothing new as the Missouri will join the Mississippi and head south and flood. Lastly, the desire by some to have a river or lakefront home is something to often has it downside. The same people who buy into climate change also want the dams removed. If you don't believe me you should follow the news in Oregon.

Can you point out where there was going to be spending in McCook or even in South Dakota that would have amounted to anything significant in this event? If you can't, then you're just talking out your ass. Maybe you got an ass big enough to talk from frequently, but it surely isn't a good look. After all, just because this is a video of damaged infrastructure in McCook, and the bill you're referencing has the word 'infrastructure' in it, doesn't make the two in any relation to each other.

@@itguy4055This is true. Except now, with an overload of heat trapping gases in the atmosphere, it gets warmer than it used to. A warmer atmosphere can hold more water, so when it rains, it might rain harder than ever before. This ain’t normal and to suggest otherwise is to ignore the suffering of so many of our fellow countrymen and women. It’s time to face the problem head on and get on with fixing it in order to save our great nation from this existential threat to its wellbeing. Cheers.
