In July 2014, a dozen operators from Delta Force, supported by the 75th Ranger Regiment and a Jordanian Special Forces operator, conducted an operation against the town of Al-Akirshi in Northern Syria to free 8 American, British and New Zealand prisoners being held hostage by the Islamic State.
This video is dedicated to the memory of Sergey Gorbunov, James Foley, Steven Sotloff, David Haines, Alan Henning, Peter Kassig and Kayla Mueller.

Delta Force was founded by Rangers, and that's part of the reason Delta look to Rangers first for selection.

Delta Force and Rangers conduct Direct Action missions or DA for the Army. The Ranger Regiment is a pipeline for Delta Force, as many of them are selected from the 75th. Delta Force's model is based on the British Special Air Service on how they are organized and conduct operations.

I was in Afghanistan the same time this operation took place. I was in Bagram AFB and I was out later in the evening when I heard an unusual jet engine roaring up on the airstrip. It wasn't taking off, but just a sustained increase in thrust on the ground from what I could hear. I'm fairly certain it was a stealth bomber. I never thought too much of it, but this happened in the summer of 2014, so it's possible that this was the undisclosed jet that was used on this operation. It was the one and only time I heard that specific jet engine during my 9 month tour.

The stealth bomber is too valuable and secretive to have been there. For bombing runs it takes off from its home base flies for hours and refuels in air then returns to its home base, in the states.

I remember at the time of this operation there was new coverage talking about the rescue attempt. I know America sent some of their best men and women to find the hostages and you can't expect them to perform miracles without solid intelligence. Its tragic to hear the loss of all the hostages that were not able to be located and saved. My heart goes out to them and their families. May they RIP.

On my last trip to jordan i met a few of the american SF guys in jordan and zarqa. Well, they didnt say they were SF, but as a former member of the US army seeing how they looked and carried themselves, to me, it was obvious, they were part of some sort of SF unit. They were real chill on both encounters but there was an intense feeling in the air. Its hard to explain. This was a few weeks after the jordanian pilot was captured and burned alive. ( rest in paradise).

I know our respective people (in the US and UK) will always say their sf are the best, however why not, we are all patriots. US people say their sf are the best in the world, and we in the UK say our sf are the best. Lets cut to the chase, we are all proud of our men and women of our forces, however one thing is for certain, you mix US and UK sf and you have to feel sorry for the baddies lol - I hear a lot of both US and UK sf who say they have worked with either, and have the highest respect for them. We can all sleep nicely at night, knowing we have these warriors, watching our backs. Respect and a big thank you, to our US friends, and our UK servicemen and women.

Alan Haine's Daughter, Bethany is an extraordinarily brave woman. Despite Knowing what happened to her father, and the fact that IS still had pockets of resistance in the area, she travelled to Syria with a journalist to try and locate his remains, and confronted IS prisoners and Jihadist Brides in a detention camp. She took absolutely no shit from them and gave little respect towards their warped interpretation of Islam. It's incredibly sad that the likelihood is Alan will never be found, nor any answers provided regards to why he was so callously executed.

@Proud Indian eg, in Christianity we are told to "Thou shalt not kill" it's wrong. it was misinterpreted. Because Jesus spoke in Aramaic and Hebrew. The correct translation would be "thou shalt not murder", because the words were missing in translation from Hebrew to Greek and Latin before went to English. This is not including nuance and difference on policy at the time

There are lots of ignorant people on this comment section. The 75th Ranger Regiment is a special operations unit that specializes in direct action. They aren’t “special forces support”, “spec ops capable”, or “just elite infantry”. They are special operators with a full spectrum of special operations capabilities. They are equal to their sister units in SOCOM. They have captured and killed more high value targets than any other SOF or conventional units. They are not “back up or perimeter security” for other SOF units. You will not see Rangers pulling security for SF, regular SEAL Teams, or MARSOC on a raid. If anything it would be the other way around. On rare occasions they will pull security for the tier 1 elements when it comes to sensitive hostage rescue missions, but this is the exception not the rule. The vast majority of times they are clearing rooms alongside the tier 1 SMUs. They work with tier 1 units but most of their operations on their own. Most Delta Force operators come directly from Regiment.

The raid would likely have been successful had it been conducted prior to the French and Spaniards buying their hostages back. The bigger the group, the harder it is to isolate and secure them. We'll never know for sure.
@r.c.1881
@r.c.1881 4 жыл бұрын
I would actually argue for the contrary. A big group can be split and locked in multiple sites, hard to spot and storm at the same time. Also, it gives a vast array of credible threats(eg. if you do get to find and save one, we'll execute the others, therby sapping the will to partecipate from those parties who do not have too much confidence in the actionable intelligence). A single hostage, or multiple hostages located closely instead provide for a very tempting target. They are there, packed, once taken back no more credible threats on other hostages... Had they been indeed held together, then the intelligence provided by the bought back hostages might have been invaluable.

Yeah, just goes to show what poor leadership we had in the states at rhe time. IS should've never gotten that big

If you wanna know why kidnapping and hostage-taking are so lucrative, just look toward France and Spain for the answer.

DAMN! I can't imagine the feeling of not being able to find and get those fellow Americans out. Major suck.

Maybe unarmed Americans should stop going there to get captured and then needing millions spent, lives too, to rescue them. It's sad the do gooders were killed, no doubt, but why were they there needing to be rescued? Can't they think ahead first and say, maybe this isn't a good idea to go in harms way without a rifle. Liberals, find a cure before it's too late. R.I.P.

I got broke in by a Delta force warrior we were crossing a street and come under fire I froze for some unknown reason it was my first real battle. He grabbed me and we took off for cover then I snapped back then it was on. We killed alot of enemy. I couldn't shot well with the dam peep sight so I asked him for a pair pliers. Cut peep sight into made me a dove tail sight I was okay then. Then here's comes a Ranger out of 82 airborne we were on corner of building seeking in good shots now and then this solider got into prone position. Out in open. He took a direct hit from a RPG blew away the front of his body I never seen nothing like that on my life and will never forget any way I got the ones who killed him started to advance down road then enemycame out ran into house I followed was fixing to go into house the Delta Force solider me again said don't go in. He said it was possibility of booby trap so we cracked open door sure enough after a few seconds I could see the thin fishing lines that went to the explosives after that I always threw grenades into houses
