In November 2001, two Squadrons from the 22 S.A.S. Regiment deployed to Afghanistan where they were assigned the mission of securing a factory in the South-West of the country. Codenamed Operation Trent, the mission became a milestone in S.A.S. History, with it not only featuring the first HALO insertion into hostile territory by the the Regiment, but it was also the largest operation to be conducted by the S.A.S. since 1945, involving some 120 operators.

I think an ex SAS soldier summed it up very well. He said "The very nature of our tasking means that operations either go spectacularly well or spectacularly badly ". The only person I know who I know for a fact served in the SAS in the 1980s is someone you would never ever guess served with them if you met him. They are a unique type of soldier.

That may be so but the very nature of THIS 'tasking' was utter bullshit. S.A.S. felt like they were missing out on the action and were jonesing for a piece of the pie. So they dreamed up a 'daring' overly complicated cookie-cutter typical special operation raid with no significant military purpose. It was, as we used to say, just a 'fun jump'. HALO in to certify an LZ? Seriously? Why didn't they just chopper In??? I mean, how was the team gonna get OUT if the ground was soft and C-130's couldn't land? Then driving half way across the 'Stan in broad daylight? Did they seriously think their invisibility cloaks were going to protect them? Were they planning on using Jedi mind tricks to fool the locals into thinking they were a stampeding herd of goats? And they were seriously under-gunned for a raid. Very basic military principle is offensive force anywhere from three to ten times the strength of the entrenched defensive forces you attack, depending on the situation. Instead these jokers launched what was essentially a frontal assault and relied on Navy bombs to do the job for them by brute force while they took the credit and collected the medals. Not impressed. Saw way too much of this kind of jackassery in my day.

The SAS shooters I ran across during OIF and OEF were always larger than life to me. A kid who grew up fascinated by military history, I ended up in the 82nd 1st/504th for 8 years and than Triple Canopy for 3 years many times serving as QRF or a force multiplier for various Special Forces ODA’s and SOF units. In Basra the SAS element we supported a handful of times actually took the time between operations to give my platoon pointers and suggestions to improve our own lethality and survivability and did so in such a way where you didn’t feel like they were talking down to you, you felt like they genuinely wanted to impart vital knowledge to a young 11B so they made it home to their family.

Royal Marines are respectable in their own right, but their function and training is different as they serve a different purpose. They are a larger force, and serve functions similar to the US Marines. Navy SEALs are equivalent to the SBS. They have a selection process, with a higher array of skills trainings. SEALs undergo 6 months of Basic Underwater Demolition training, then on to a year of SEAL Qualifications Training. Roughly 18 months of training before they are assigned a Team and undergo more training with that team.

I'm Dutch, it surely doesnt matter to make my point but i'm someone with quite a lot of interest in ww2 . If you're English and you appreciate special services within the millitary i have to suggest you a great (audio) book : It's from Ben MacIntyre - Rogue Heroes. It's a great book, basically explaining the start of specialist units, men without fear, completely devoted to both mission and survival of their unit. It's just mind blowing how the English invented 'special forces' and how much a few men were able to do a lot of damage. My respect goes out to anyone from the UK who have liberated the Netherlands, i thank you with all my heart.

During WW2 my father was one of the first 20 men who formed the first platoon of the British paratroopers the red berries. He did mention about dropping behind enemy lines. But it was only after he passed away at 92 that I found his SAS badge and a invitation to a SAS reunion in England. I don’t know how he was able to keep it to himself all those years. I informed the regiment of his passing and they thanked me. I remember seeing the SAS live on television going down ropes from the roof of the Iranian Embassy and rescuing all the hostages and killed all the terrorists but one who pretended to be a hostage an$ was saved by the police as the SAS where taking him back into the Embassy to finish the job. Margret Thatcher told the SAS that she wanted the job to finish that day and it did.

Same here my great grandad mike at the age of 60 one night stumbled into my grans bedroom drunk and started ranting to her about his time in the SAS and his time as part of SOE, my gran and grandad both knew he was in the army but they thought he was just drunk and didn't know what he was saying when it came to the SAS stuff, he died not long after and while digging through his stuff the found SAS badges and loads of other stuff still don't know what he did though. If the details of this Operation are accurate, this was indeed a superb representation of the high standards of each individual SAS Soldier and the Unit overall. To have so defeated an entrenched, heavily armed, well manned enemy force on their own terrain without taking any serious casualties is utterly remarkable and an indicator of good planning, tactics and top quality soldiering.

This was mid-to-late november 2001, a month and a half after the initial invasion. By that time the US was conducting an extensive air campaign, both with strikes on strategic and logistical targets and by dropping propaganda leaflets all over Afghanistan. The air forces (both the actual air force and navy) weren't, however, brought up to that speed yet as some of the seaborn assets hadn't arrived in the area of operations yet. And since the americans didn't believe in the importance of the mission (in the video it is stated that they didn't even consider it a worthy target at all until the UK pushed on it), it was certainly not a priority. I can almost see some american TF commander going: "Well, tell 'em it's 1100 or nothing. Maybe that'll shut 'em up."

The Fact, "the force that wins is the winner" I'm always glad when it one of our allies. My country got mad many, many years ago over Tea and Taxes and after a sizable war - for the time and our population - and a little help from our (other) friends we became a new country called the United States, (you know - the other side of the pond) and we grow and grow until we fill it coast to coast and border to border (at a great cost to the folks that were already here) sadly another story. Rome ruled for about 2,000 yrs and each great since then has been a fewer years at the top but less and less than 2,000 years. The USA is in the 246th year of it's life and I've been a member since 1-24-1942 = 80 yrs and counting! I think its great, "Yep I can think of a few improvements" but, "A small candle on a dark night is a beacon of light" and we're more than a small candle of light to a sometimes very dark world of our ideas of freedom. We will remain as long as we remain firm in the idea that freedom is worth the fight and the death to truly be a free people. Maybe we have already lost that freedom and don't even know it yet. May God have mercy on our souls if that turns out to be the fact we missing in 2022, a good year but still kind of fuzzy as Russia and others are pushing Eastward into NATO countries. May an old man's death and his children and their children death be in a country that still believes freedom is worth the cost and "ism" is worth fighting against. God in the overview picture may not care, but I do and I'm only human but dam full of this is still one of the greatest countries on the planet. U.S. Army 1960-196? RA 19 859 XXX, Fort Polk, LA in, Fort Jackson, N.C out. Living out West and it is still a great life!
