Good vid. Some folks talked about price. I paid $500.00 for a 20 footer with a decent trailer on craigs list. I spent about 100 hours fixing it up and now do overnight solo cruises. Its no RV, but with persistence and a vision, one can turn almost any boat with a decent hull into a mini-cruiser.

Catalina 36s are great coastal cruisers, solid on the water, and spacious inside. I'm 6'4" and my wife is 6' tall, so we seriously wanted a boat we could stand up in and sleep in. Got an air mattress and with a couple of battens across the cabin sole, turns the main cabin settees into a full king size bed. Why someone dislikes these boats, I don't know. Mine has been in the Transpac to Hawaii and back twice.

Thanks for posting this video. I'm preparing to hit the road with my housecar before too long, and am always looking for tips on storage, small items, multiple use things, etc. The Sacramento delta calls, also, with hundreds of miles of interesting shorelines, lots of wildlife and many quite places, away from the skiers and other high-speed traffic. For that, I'd need some kind of boat, and such a sailboat would have multiple uses.

They've done Transpacs (mine twice) and circumnavigations. They are solid coastal cruisers and for those who want to race, do well with time adjusted speeds. One can disparage any make or model, and that's a long-standing dock tradition. But, really, why? Each boat has advantages and disadvantages. Some more than others, but price per pound, Catalinas are hard to beat.

Depends on a lot of different factors, Sailboats can cost anywhere from 5,000.00 to 550,000. and sometimes even WAY more than that. The larger the boat, the more the cost of purchase. But there are deals everywhere. If you are living at a marinia you can figure on spending a certain amount per month, 250.00 or in some more popular high scale places the 250 a month plus 50.00 a foot for the boat. Or just the 50.00 a foot. Reserach helps with docking a lot. Add to all this the amount of up keep.

Depends on where you are and what you WANT to do... I have known live abords that were teachers, writers, retirees, lawyers, doctors, Sailing instructors. Boat builders, and even people that worked in a resturant. If you are a live aboard and are planning on traveling the world in your boat... Take with you skills that other countries might need. Like English teachers. or builders or something of that nature. Some work for 6 months out of the year, and sail for the other 6 months.

Guys -- I truly enjoyed this video. I think it clearly presented the assets of the Catalina 30 Sailboat which I owned and sailed from Florida to the Bahamas in the early 1990s. The boat, which you claim to be a '36 foot boat, presented the features both internally and externally of a Catalina 30. I think you may have made a mistake.Catalina owners are very familiar with other Catalina sailboats. I have been aboard and considered buying a Catalina 36. I opted for the 30 because the 36 did not offer enough difference in amenities to justify the significant difference in price. I never regretted that decision though I truly loved and still appreciate the significant difference in width and heavy seaworthiness that the 36 provided. I believed then and I still believe that the Catalina 30 is a significantly better value than the '36.Your presentation of the boat was excellent. Your understanding of cruising and living aboard the '30-'40 foot boat, sail or otherwise, left a great deal to be desired. Boats do, for sure, offer a tiny house alternative and you are, as far as I know, the first to include them as a tiny house alternative. I really look forward to what you loonies may be able to come up with in the future.

+I'm Grateful I can say with certainty that this boat is indeed Catalina 36. My parents have owned this boat for years. I just listed this for them on a couple of sailboat classified sites. All specs are out there now. Sailboatlistings.com and catalinaowners.com And, by the way, I do mean this exact boat that was used in the episode above. These guys know my parents.

That is a 36. It has the extra window up front & the proper chart table. They are very similar, it is, more or less, a scaled up 30 but the 36 does have the bigger head area, the chart table area, and they are built a little heavier. I think that's why there was a big price jump. . We never owned a 36 but I really loved them. Catalina really went the extra step on the 36 to make a very capable ocean going boat but yes, you are right, huge price jump from the 30 to the 36. There was even a big price jump from the 34, which I also liked, to the 36. I actually think the 34 would be more comfy to live on but if someone is wanting to do serious offshore cruising, the 36 is more suitable. lol You guys got me missing sailing.

I didn't realize that the boats were so similar. It's really hard to tell in the video that it's larger than the 30. In any case, if it's a Catalina, it an outstanding, reasonably priced boat. We sold our 30 in 2005. Got exactly what we paid for it, so we owned it for 15 years for the cost of maintenance. We ran into 18-foot following seas about an hour out of West End on our return trip from the Bahamas. Initially, I was terrified but with the winged keel, the boat surfed down the face of those big waves without difficulty. My LORAN said we were making 18 knots over the ground. After the terror subsided, it was exhilarating. Lasted about an hour and a half then settled down to four foot seas. We never did figure out what could have caused it but I couldn't have been happier with the way the 30 handled in those conditions.

I'm Grateful Yea, that 30 is an outstanding boat. They are built more for coastal cruising but they can take it if it gets rough. They are also very roomy for a 30 & they sail well. They made them for a long time & they sold lots of them so now they are an outstanding value on the used market. What's not to love?

Not all boats are meant to liveaboard, nor cross oceans! Catalina's are designed as weekend family boat's, nothing more or less and they do a great job as an inexpensive way to get on the water.

Rule of thumb is that upkeep costs about 12-15% a year of the median price of the boat of that length. Example: a 40 footer with median-price of 45K will cost you in maintenance about 5K a year. With docking fees, tax, insurance, thats comes to about 15K a year. This explains why boats are sooo cheap to buy - owners do anything to ditch them.

Nice tour but a small correction is definitely needed. Since folks have been living happily and successfully aboard for hundreds (thousands?) of years yer might say "RVs are rolling boats/land yachts but NEVER that live aboard boats are "floating RVs." The only land vehicles to claim such a long heritage are gypsy wagons. And pickup truck campers, "bug-out" vehicles & utility trailers with propane stoves & sleeping bags are nice and have their use but they ain't the same. AAARGH! Capn Lan

Rusty Shackleford if you really need to talk numbers you can't afford a boat it's basically a hole in the water that you throw money into between refits hallouts and slip fees you also have general maintenance fuel and emergency maintenance because stuff breaks plus regular living expenses emergency money if you're in the Caribbean you can say $1,000 a month and you probably could get by on it no problem but then something bad could happen you can have a fire or your motor could go south a mass could break you can be caught in a bad storm and take on a lot of water you just never know you just deal with the things when they come up

Showers on these small boats make no sense. When you are at sea, you can't afford the water and when you are in port, it is better to use the showers in the harbor. I knew a guy that liked to shower on his boat and every time aboard, all I could think of was a men's gym because the water goes into the bilge and lots of skin flakes and other organic matter thrive in that bilge and smell bad.

The water from the shower on this boat does not go into the bilge, it has its own sump pump area and is pumped directly overboard . I love using the shower on my boat. (I also have one in the cockpit for an open air sun shower :) )

+Patriot Jefferson When sailboats were new in the 1970s they ran about $1,000 per running foot thus a 36 foot boat was about $36,000. Oddly, today the used ones still run about the same. Amazing how they retain their value although the value of the dollar shrinks so $36,000 today for a decades old used but in great shape 36 footer would be like $3,600 a few decades ago so in that way, hummm, they are a great deal today. I can build you a 53 foot top of the line super survivor sailboat for only about 11 million. Of course that boat has everything already on it vs new boats as they are today, basically empty, so you have to add tons of stuff, everything and for tons of money too.
