TEDx Talks

13 жыл бұрын

Amy Purdy talks about the power of imagination. She explains how our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but by the choices we make. Imagination allows us to break down borders, to move beyond our circumstances, to create and constantly progress.
Amy Purdy has been through hardships that most of us will never face -- or can even fathom. But what makes her story so incredible is not that fact that she lived a "normal" childhood and spent her high school years as a passionate artist and snowboarder, then traumatically lost both her legs at age 19, but how she has persevered, taking implausible challenges and rising above them.
Today, Amy is an athlete; currently the top ranked adaptive female snowboarder in the world. Amy also spends a good amount of time helping others; specifically those with physical challenges get involved with snowboarding, skateboarding, wakeboarding and other action sports through the organization she co-founded Adaptive Action Sports. Challenging herself while making a positive impact on the world is a true testament to Amy's spirit.
About TEDx.
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
At TEDx events, a screening of TEDTalks videos -- or a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos -- sparks deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis.

Very inspirational. I love the part about how when you face a hardship you can do one of two things. 1) Let it beat you down, or 2) Get creative and discover a way to use it to your advantage. Amy was faced with a problem but she decided to keep living her life anyways. I find that some of the worst circumstances can , if you choose to, be the best learning experiences you'll ever have. Embrace change and embrace yourself! -Great Video!

Such a long overdue thank you to Amy for sharing her story. I was in the darkest, place I'd ever experienced after my husband left in 2010. Amy Purdy's story was the most uplifting story I think I ever heard. her personal victory is astounding. She is a person that has/is achieving the highest of human potential... Not because of what she has accomplished with the tests that she has been given, but even more so, because of her attitude and he strength. I love her... I am a mom of nine kids.

thanks for sharing Amy... keep inspiring us... I wish more people could face their fears head on to break through borders to do anything and be anything they want to be. It is IMHO, a real shame that most people today know exactly what they don't want and are not grateful for their blessings or imagination. I, on the other hand am grateful that you shared your message and inspired me to do more.

I like the bravery. It takes a lot to talk about past trauma situations especially when you could’ve died and being close to death is not funny nor is it anything to play with. A lot of times people will make comments on how you should feel or even make fun but God brought you out of that and that’s a blessing because most people that go through stuff like this don’t always come out of it.

You are totally right in every respect. I've been through all of it, and had to work through a tremendous amount of hospitalization and recovery, and I'm still permanently damaged. And I know that I'm doing extremely well compared to...95% of humans. But so is she, which is why she should be back out there helping those less fortunate, not showing off her great clothes and new set of designer legs to wealthy socialites. She should be among the destitute and let someone else at TED speak for her.

I agree. Hardships in general are a massive driving force for peoples lives. If you had everything you needed to be happy/content/satisfied from day one til the end I believe very few, if any, would do anything more than eat, sleep, hang out and hook up. It's being put in a position where you don't have what you need that drives a person to bridge the gap.

My mom lost her left leg 5 months ago to diabetes, it almost killed her! She lost most of her body mass and the doctors were checking for a lot of different things and not that. When she lost her leg she was so discouraged and listless. It was the story of a little girl (13) who lost her leg as well, this young girl's bravery gave her hope. Amy's story encouraged her not to give up (Amy's tale is about not giving up, that's how we saw it). My mom is 60 and now she's walking again with confidence
