Living In A Yurt | COLD & WET - Off The Grid, Day 8 • Living In A Yurt | COL... The Weather Hits HARD in this episode but my amazing girlfriend Nicole and I are up to the task! We are only a couple days away from completing our Yurt. One more day the platform will be done, then the yurt will go up in a day or two. Give us POSITIVE thoughts in the comments below and wish us two more days of sunny weather! We need it!
This Yurt build and Yurt life will be a journey, we hope you SUBSCRIBE and come with us! Enjoy #yurt #offgrid #tinyhouse #seeds #livingoffgrid #garden #veganathlete #gardening #DIY
Nicole and I are attempting to live off the grid in British Columbia, Canada. We have 8 acres of forest property sandwiched in between the Pacific Ocean, a fresh water lake, and a stream which flows year round from the lake into the ocean. For over nearly 10 years I grew a fruit tree, permaculture, garden, and native edible plant, herb, and raised bed garden food forest. You can still watch all the garden videos of my old desert garden in Arizona. I was born in British Columbia and I have returned to the Rain Forests of British Columbia to a "Raw Land" property to grow my 1st FULL EDIBLE FOOD FOREST Off Grid on a wilderness property. This climate is temperate and coastal, rarely seeing snow in the winter and highs in the 80's (30 Celsius) in the summer. It is a rare microclimate that spans from gardening zone 7-9. The property is 8 acres and completely overgrown, mostly with conifer trees. This area is a verifiable rain forest and situated in the Southwestern-most tip of the Canadian "Great Bear Rain Forest". NicHolistic ( / holisticnicole ) and I will be learning about edible seaweeds, edible native plants, edible mushrooms, and many other edible native trees/plants as we attempt to Build a Yurt, Draw Our Energy Clean, Live Off the Grid, and Grow an Epic Superfoods Garden and Fruit Tree Orchard. We will also have a lot of changes coming so get ready. More videos and BTS Clips at my VLOG channel / adventureswjakenicole

My father in law, when setting post into the ground, would just add the dry cement into the hole and let the ground moisture set it. Was a very effective use of cement, and no mixing required. Not sure how effective it would be in your application, but would have been a huge time saver...

I've done that but added water to the dry cement in the hole. Worked well with the quick-set cement mix.

Can I strongly recommend putting some diagonal bracing between the stumps and bearers and also work on getting your stumps level vertically the other thing I noticed on the vid it looked like your concrete mix was to a bit on the wet side. I love what you guys are doing I’m doing something similar here in OZ.

Hi Jake, hello from Phoenix.you done a lot of work on the stilts, I'm just worried that there are no diagonals to keep them from laying down on you when you load it down. Hope that's in the instructions. A good side wind will put several hundred pounds sideways force on your structure

You could take a still picture from 1:50 and hang it up in your yurt somewhere, that's a really beautiful portrait of your home to be, from it's earliest beginnings. That or maybe a drone pic, like at 13:55. So awesome to see all this coming to fruition, super happy for you both, hope the weather stays good and the bugs thin out!

You need cross bracing dude. Add much more weight and the whole thing will fall over, it's called racking. If those were long piles in the ground it wouldn't be necessary but they are just free standing on the ground.

Jake, when we went to Lac Parent in Quebec, the early kin cousins of those bugs were the rage. The only peas we had was out on the water fishing was bug free, totally. Then back on land was waving with the hand because bee veils were not in the plan. The bugs are a part of weedout, kept the wimps out of there. And windy air is bug free too. I decided to say I love the cold because snow means no mud or bugs. Nicole not wiping out is amazing.

Be sure to check your PawPaw seeds if they didn't advice you to check them upon arrival. They are packed in moisture to keep the seeds from drying out and they will mold. Tough seed to germinate. Lots of wonderful selection of seeds you've chosen for this growing season. I live near Baker's Creek and visit twice per year and have watched a fledgling company grow into what it is today thanks to all the people who are opening their hearts and minds like yourselves. Happy Gardening!

Another idea for seeds... When I lived in Maine (with equally short growing season as northern Vancouver) I procured seeds from Veseys seeds on Prince Edward Island, Canada and was always satisfied with their product. Not sure how they compare in price to your current supplier, but thought you might like to know in case you want to expand or compare seed sources.

Baker Creek is my favorite seed company. Make Shute you open those paw paw seeds right away. They come wrapped in wet material because they can’t dry out. Takes 6-8 weeks before you see germination... but you probably already know that. Just get them planted ASAP .

If the temp is below 60f. Warm the water to 115f then mix with concrete. Then pour in. The cold ground will absorb the water allowing the concrete to set quicly and will mot crack as it cures.

you can look for organic pyrethrum oil. it can be sprayed around tents, yards, clothes, etc. its made from a small white daisy. its a perennial to zone 6. for skin lemon eucalyptus oil works really good. cedar oil, also, but it wears off faster. you can use lemon e. EO in your laundry, as well. youll smell like a citronella candle but it works well. it also helps on the bites. so does coconut oil and whole leaf aloe vera gel. i use a combo of the EO of lemon e. diluted into coconut oil. you don't want to get pyrethrum directly on your skin so it needs to be dry. there are a lot of pyrethrim products on the market that are not organic or actually made from the flower. pyrethrum is organic approved although you don't want to apply it to yards, gardens, etc, while your beneficial insects are out.

Maybe too late for the advice but have you tried making small fires that produce a lot of smoke to clear the bugs from the area? When I work outside here in Goa I do it to keep the mosquitoes away and it seems to work. You can use coffee cans to produce a good coal bed then just add damp/green material to produce smoke.

You'll want to add some X bracing to your pier posts. That squishy BC soil is going to be problematic during the thaw. The X bracing will help tie the supporting structure together. Lemon eucalyptus oil mixed with neem oil should help a bit with the bugs. You two are adorable. Good luck.

I commend you both for chasing your dreams although sometimes I wonder at some of the risks you’re both taking(still, it’s your life and hers and who am I to say what is best? I’m no expert) Although I’d like to impart some friendly advice...about those midges.the no see-ums and later on in the summer the deer fly that you might see? Try tea tree oil if you haven’t already...just don’t get it in your eyes or ingest it. It has many uses and I’ve used it and it works. The other way to repell bugs is by using smudge fires and wood ash. The other piece of advice I have is seeds - love what you’re both trying to do and would recommend westcoastseeds.com they are a Canadian company from mainland B.C. - you’d save on shipping and they have planting times and lots of info that would help you out. I’ve bought from both Baker Creek and Westcoast seeds. They’re both great. It’s just that Westcoast seeds is closer to you(less carbon footprint) and the seeds are viable to your zone. Best of luck to you both. Looking forward to seeing what grows.

I wonder if burning sage or some other dried herb would repel the bugs 🤷‍♀️

Will the bugs leave when you finish your home? Is there a marshy area near there where they live? Work on that. Those bugs look miserable. Great work folks. Might consider plastic under the supports for dry storage.

Hey Jake. Thanks for another great video. As I have commented in Nicole's videos, there is some use of the same footage, but it doesn't really matter as you both have become good at providing some slightly different angles and edits of the footage which makes it all seem quite fresh. Eg: I loved the brief reverse jump up onto the beams and reverse hat toss - the forward of which was in Nicole's video. One of the viewers on the premiere made a comment about running in cougar country. This is something you should really consider seriously as all the attacks on Vancouver Island fall into two categories: 1) small children crouched down playing with their backs to the woods. 2) people running or biking near dawn/dusk which, to a cat, makes you look like a yummy gazelle and triggers their natural hunting instincts of pursuit. So please take care as there is a very high rate of attacks in the Port Alice and north island area. Looking forward to your next video which shouldn't be too long a wait as I think I saw you type the word "tomorrow"?! Simply AWESOME. Lance only this time - Victoria

The essential oil you need for mosquitoes is cintranila. That’s what is in all the natural bug repellent. Also for roaches they hate cedar wood oil. If can, plant cintranila plants all over and it will help some. 🤙🏻

You could try a cork hat to ward off insects :)

You guys should wear dust mask when you mix cement which you don't want to breathe in. Just a thought :) Nicole can come and hammer for me anytime, I suck at it which is why I always use screws for everything. Shoes look really awesome, you guys have to wear them and give us a review to see how they compare with the real thing. You guys made great progress, love these videos. I am just so fascinated when someone is building something from scratch especially in an odd environment or circumstances. Keep up with the great work.

Yeah better hold your breathe good when the concrete smoke is around you then move away and only breathe in the clean area. You sip the air. Masks don't work. Take 3 deep breathes and hold. It's snorkeling practice. Centarians Jake and Nicole.

30cm of gravel under each pier block. Simpler, cheaper and better in the long run because it can be easily adjusted for height.

You really want to add cross braces to prevent the stilts from racking. There is very little support to prevent lateral movement of the top relative to the bottom of the columns.

I'm sending in wisdom from the gangsta so you can always make great videos and saying the truth is the kicks for the flicks. What if you made a collection on DVD of all you AZ videos and offer them at cost and watch the donations roll in so even if you they shut you down, you can keep rolling. The AZ videos are priceless. If men who are depressed start growing plants, it helps them. Plants are love in a way. Food plants are for sure. And plants never yell at you or tell you that you can't do this or that. A plant can't shut you down, unless........... it's a power plant.
