OMG!!! What a sack of BS! This is NOT a highly ranked city. Crime is VERY high. The schools SUCK - which has had a huge effect on the general quality of life in this city. Personally I know nothing about UNM except that people may steal your catalytic converter while you're parked there. Over all it is a very poor city. Forget any police assistance if you have a horribly noisy neighbor, or are victim of a non violent crime. From what I here from folks is that the police mostly say they cannot do anything since they didn't 'see it happen' - meaning they won't even talk to those who behave badly. But apparently there are not enough police officers and they are busy with the violent crime. In housing there's a huge range to be had and you can get a dump dirt cheap in a bad area, something nice in a bad neighborhood for a really good price or something nice in a decent area for a good price, and there are a select few areas with VERY nice, expensive houses. Only problem is, like everywhere right now, there are not enough houses on the market. There are not enough doctors nor veterinarians so appointments for you and your pets may take many weeks to get and one of the 2 emergency vet hospitals will turn you away if your pet is not actually critical - like dying. I recently spoke with a girl born and raised here who spent 5 yrs living in Seattle before returning home here to ABQ. She said, "If I am going to live in a ghetto, I may as well live in my home ghetto." Outside the city New Mexico is beautiful. But if you're not an outdoors type then this is lost on you. IMO, New Mexican style food is highly over rated - bland food covered up by hot chilis. Yeah, how novel that they call it "christmas" when you order both green and red chilis. A city favorite is called Sadies and I do not get it: again, bland food smothered in New Mexico's famed home grown chili peppers. It is a sad, old, mostly run down city with painfully little diversity if you like to shop, or enjoy anything Asian. There are two sad stores where you can find Asian cooking ingredients and one is called an 'Oritental' store! How offensive! Video can make it look pretty here, but it is dry and dusty with lots of homes with bars on the windows and unkept properties. But the ABQ senior services system is very nice, impressive even, and has lots of activities to enjoy if you're social or crafty, and they offer adequate meals for low prices to seniors. All things are a matter of perspective and differing POV of course and plenty of folks love ABQ.
