You should also speak Spanish to your kids, I say! :) I first came to Greece in the early eighties in my early 20s. I stayed here for 15 years. For the first couple of years, I didn't speak the language. This meant that I had to stay in the bubble of the expat English-speaking community, which sucked! I couldn't understand the richness of the culture, as I couldn't have any conversation in Greek beyond the weather. I felt that I was missing so many things. Greeks were talkers and expressive people. The whole country opened up to me when I learned the language. The talks, the laughter, the friendships we had! After I left for professional reasons, I kept returning each year and my friends became family! Now I am back for good, retired in my beloved city, Athens. The foreigners who move to another country must understand what they lose if they don't speak the language.

Λατρεύω πως φαίνεσαι σαν Έλληνας! I studied in Athens 15 years ago, and while I can hear that you don't speak exactly native Greek, you "feel" all Greek. The attitude, the inflections, it's all there. And you get excited about all the right things, you don't just relate dry information. I feel like listening to a Greek person. And as someone who also deeply loves this country that unfortunately I couldn't stay longer in, I admire how much you've become one of them

Congratulations for your videos. Every new one is better than the previous one and you describe Greek customs perfectly. COncerning the Turkish toilets though, they were used mainly in the past in public buildings (and some homes at earlier times) because they are considered to be the most hygenic toilets. You don't come in contact with the toilet so it is almost impossible to contract a disease. Kee in mind that when these buildings were constructed there weren't any dissinfectants like we have today and the diseases were more serious since medical science was still very crude. Such toilets are still used in buildings like army camps etc for that exact reason. And one the other hand, there are a lot of studies that show that the stance you get when you use these toilets is more natural and healthy than just sitting on a modern toilet. After all humans didn't have sitting toilets for millenia.

An argument could be made that this type of toilet is leaning towards hygiene rather than comfort, with only shoes touching the specified areas and keeping yourself hovering over it. Also the same type of toilet is found around the world, eg in public places in Japan, they call it " washiki toire".

Greek here, commenting on the "turkish" style toilets. They are somewhat common in public places (public bathrooms, schools etc etc). In the schools I've been to, they had the normal style toilets like we have in the homes, probably because they were somewhat newer buildings (definately post 1990). But when I had my baptism of fire with those toilets? In the army... During my army service, for 9 months I had to use that hole in the ground. And ok, peeing is easy... But squatting down for 5-10 mins, damn that hurts the knees so much. But, supposedly it very easy to clear them. We just sprayed eveything with chlorine and water it down with the hose. These style of toiletes are remnants from previous decades...

Great video Daniel. Just a couple of pointers: Store opening hours are both centrally and regionally mandated. There are general guidelines for opening hours but tourist regions (like Nafplio) and certain areas within cities are exempted from restricting opening hours. Also some leeway is given to the local chambers of commerce to regulate opening hours in their area of jurisdiction. Supermarkets will stay open all day except Sundays of course. About Turkish toilets: They can be tricky but are considered "safer" against infections because you don't have to sit on them, especially for girls. But I agree that we live in 2024. School toilets should be adequately equipped with sanitary equipment and not revert to 100 year old solutions. And lastly. I envy you for living in Nafplio. I hope at some point in my life I will be able to move there.

γεια Daniel.. Firstly many thanks for the content so far, absolutely loving it. My wife and I started visiting the Greek islands together about 12 years ago and have fell in love with the People, the Culture and the Food. 1 x Kos, 1 x Zakynthos, 2 x Crete, 1 x Corfu, 6 x Kefalonia & Naxos planned for later this year. Everytime something goes wrong here in the North of England I say to the Wife 'Thats it, were moving to Greece' However I think that it will never happen so we will just have to keep visiting. Really want to do the Mainland, and get to know the 'Real Greece' as opposed to 'Tourist Greece' We both retire in a few years at 55 and keep joking the kids that we are moving to Greece and leaving them to fend for themselves (they are both grown up with their own kids) and there will be no inheritance for them. Also trying to learn to speak Greek (also by listening to radio) and practice where I can on friends who have a Greek Restaurant in town. Anyway less of my chatting on, looking forward to future videos and 'efcharistó gia óli ti sklirí douleiá sas, eínai ypérocho pou ektimísate'

I absolutely agree with you about the fact that it’s the immigrant who needs to adapt to their chosen country. Ok, so I’m from Britain and it’s crazy how many people I know in France (where I live) who, despite being here for 30 odd years, have not bothered too much to learn French. They’re in their little English speaking bubble. It’s weird! I’m hearing impaired and I’ve managed an upper-intermediate level of French. I don’t have any English speaking friends. All my interactions outside of my home are in French. We’ve integrated extremely well. The reason why your videos are being recommended to me is because I’m going on holiday to Corfu and I want to learn some Greek for my stay. I’m not someone who expects others to speak English. I want to be able to be polite and express thanks to people in their language and in their country. … and watching your videos, Greece looks stunning! I’m wondering if I chose the right country to relocate to. Although, I love France and my buddies here. By the way, I heard that between Spanish and Greek, there are many shared pronunciations. Does this make Greek pronunciation easier for you seeing as you speak Spanish? Thanks for your videos, they’re super interesting 😊
@Lisimachos8 ай бұрын
Greek is totally different from Spanish language and more difficult than Spanish….If you speak Fr is easier to learn Spanish ..but if you are interested and take your time being able to speak to other Greek people without fear for your grammatical mistakes you will learn it probably in 2-3 years …good luck ..
@MovingForwardLifestyle8 ай бұрын
Greek and Spanish are similar, and it’s easier for someone to learn Greek if they speak Spanish. That being said, I know a Chinese person who speaks perfect Greek after living here for only 6 months. It’s all about the hunger for learning the language. But one thing is for sure, there are no shortcuts to learning Greek.
@munkiesyeah8 ай бұрын

@@MovingForwardLifestyle Yeah, totally agree that the “why” you’re learning is the biggest factor in making progress. I’m learning a little Greek for a trip to Corfu. It takes orchestrating skill for hundred or thousand cars to turn a 4 lane highway into a 5 lane driving experience and making it look normal! 😅At least that’s what I saw with my own eyes 20 or so years ago, hopefully things are different now.

My daughters attended primary and high school in Greece, so I’m very familiar with the Turkish toilets 😂 They are perceived as more hygienic and don’t forget that humans are naturally ment to squat to do their business 😂

On another note about the language... Most English speaking people are mostly in very touristy areas but on the other hand many of the older people still don't have it. Gen X like my husband and Millennials like my self learned English either at schools or private schooling.... Me my son and daughter are self taught (I did get a degree tho lmao) but the most recent years many kids choose to learn multiple languages dunno why (shifting to more academic needed languages or their families) but I've seen quite a few kids learning two or three languages. And in some academic areas languages is really needed for example the field I'm studying which is International Relations... Yes English is enough but other languages are preferred like Italian French Russian etc... Also I don't know how or why but Spanish for Spanish speakers it seems easier to learn the Greek Language than any other like English speakers. They still use the Turkish toilets because it's easier to clean and keep clean than the normal ones. My daughter never goes at school to pee. She's eleven and still refuses to go.

Congratulations on learning more than basic Greek. Learning at a later age is difficult. However participating is more difficult. I understand your attempt but youtube doesn't describe the long term difficulties with the language.

Monday and Wednesday shops are 9 to 5 . Other than that as a Greek i ran away.And you dont need to talk Greek.It depends your lifestyle.When i was living in Greece i mostly hang out with expats speaking english.It also depends where you are.
@MovingForwardLifestyle8 ай бұрын
On Mondays and Wednesday afternoons shops are closed if you are Greek, then you know this very well. This of course is different if you live in Athens or another big city. I have no idea where you ran away, but I am pretty sure that you need to speak the language if you want to integrate into the community as a foreigner.

@@MovingForwardLifestyle Seems i am wasting my time. Stay in your bubble. I am out.
@pennybleta23008 ай бұрын
@@stathisphanganWhat bubble he is correct. Here in Sparti and Skala Lakonias in Monday and Wednesday the shops are only open until the noon. They are closed in the afternoon. Unless they are alisides which is major chain stores,like Kotsovolos. Even Sklavenitis and most supermarkets here are following the local store hours established by the local store unions.
@pennybleta23008 ай бұрын
@@MovingForwardLifestyleDon't mind him everything you said in your video is absolutely correct. You need to also make one to warn people who want to move here. Coming for vacations is good but living here is a challenge every day. Most people would have left this country if we could. And don't get me wrong we love our country but the state makes living in it very difficult. And this are going downhill by the day. In general no system works here including the health one where I work and asidosia I don't know how to translate this word in English is what is prevalent here in Greek society. There's no rules and not only in driving. Everything is gone downhill and continues to do so by the day

If your friend doesnt want to learn greek its ok....we respect anything and anyone's choices as Greeks as long as respect is in the air...from both sides of course...but one advantage of learning greek is that you can learn easily other languages very fast if you know greek...we speak loud cause we are sentimental too much...we are open to meet ppl...when asked always find a way to help foreigners...of course you will meet bad greeks but you know there are everywhere in the world...so conclusion if you are not ready to adapt in an ORGANIZED CHAOS in Greece better have 2nd thoughts...SPOILER with fish you drink ouzo and with meat you drink tsipouro or wine

A lot of the toilets in China are like that too. It’s actually better for us, anatomically speaking, but gets a bit risky if you lose your balance 😂😂😂
